Book Accusations of Unbelief in Islam

Download or read book Accusations of Unbelief in Islam written by Camilla Adang and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume—the first of its kind—deals with takfīr: accusing one ́s opponents of unbelief (kufr). Originating in the first decades of Islam, this practice has been applied intermittently ever since. The nineteen studies included here deal with cases, covering different periods and parts of the Muslim world, of individuals or groups that used the instrument of takfīr to brand their opponents—either persons, groups or even institutions—as unbelievers who should be condemned, anathematized or even persecuted. Each case presented is placed in its sociopolitical and religious context. Together the contributions show the multifariousness that has always characterized Islam and the various ways in which Muslims either sought to suppress or to come to terms with this diversity. With contributions by: Roswitha Badry, Sonja Brentjes, Brian J. Didier, Michael Ebstein, Simeon Evstatiev, Ersilia Francesca, Robert Gleave, Steven Judd, István T. Kristó-Nagy, Göran Larsson, Amalia Levanoni, Orkhan Mir-Kasimov, Hossein Modarressi, Justyna Nedza, Intisar A. Rabb, Sajjad Rizvi, Daniel de Smet, Zoltan Szombathy, Joas Wagemakers.

The text presents a deconstruction of Islamic discourse with specific reference to jihad (military engagement) and the shahid (martyr). The Al Qaeda discourse of the greater kufr is deconstructed to expose its antecedents in militarist Islamic discourse born out of the contradiction between Islam and western capitalist colonial imperialism. Primary to the development of the discourse of military engagement with the west is the discourse of Pakistani thinkers deconstructed in the text. The discourse of Al Qaeda is then the product of contradiction between Islam and western imperialism and hegemony. Thereby constituting the most potent threat to Islam since the crusades as manifested in the discourse of Al Qaeda.

Book Tackling Shirk and Kufr in the Exegesis and Jurisprudence of Islam

Download or read book Tackling Shirk and Kufr in the Exegesis and Jurisprudence of Islam written by Leslie Terebessy and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-05-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The umma is experiencing trauma because it drifted from the Book of Allah. It turned from the ayat of Allah to manmade traditions. Turning away from Allah is the reverse of salat. It turned from the "best hadith" to follow the ways of the predecessors, as if they could guide better than Allah. The umma drifted from the Book of Allah under pressure. With the authoritarian rule, rulers required a rendition of revelation that would "justify" practices prohibited in revelation, for example, waging wars of aggression. But wars of aggression entail the perpetrations of war crimes. Wars of aggression are unlawful in the Book of Allah. For "there is no compulsion in religion." To by-pass the restraints on wars of aggression, hawkish rulers engaged ulama to render lawful what Allah ruled unlawful, the propagation of Islam through waging wars of aggression. A war of aggression is known as jihad al talab. Hawkish ulama pronounced wars of aggression not just permissible; it became a sixth pillar of Islam. They turned the teaching of reconciliation into a manifesto of war between the dar al-Islam and the dar al-harb. In doing so, the created a monster: political Islam or Islamism. Rendering unlawful wars lawful required the politicization of research. It required the weaponization of exegesis and jurisprudence. Rendering the unlawful lawful required a departure from the teaching of revelation. This transpired through recourse to the teaching of abrogation, and the treatment of tradition as revelation. The rejection of any verse or verses in the Book of Allah, however, is an expression of kufr. This does not exclude the rejection of the verses that teach peace, allegedly "abrogated" by the verses of the sword. The treatment of tradition as revelation required equating manmade texts with the Book of Allah. This was an expression of shirk. Recourse to the teaching of abrogation and the treatment of tradition as revelation corrupted the knowledge of revelation. Embracing these misperceptions turned the teaching of peace into its anathema, a teaching of war. Traditional methodology requires the subordination of revelation to tradition. It also requires the subordination of reason to tradition. Tradition surpassed both revelation and reason. The treatment of tradition as "revelation" is an expression of shirk. In so far as the treatment of tradition as revelation treats tradition as a greater authority then revelation, the subordination of revelation to tradition is a greater expression of shirk. The tainting of traditional exegesis and jurisprudence by shirk render them less than reliable. It is necessary to bring the assumptions on which they rest into accord with the teaching of revelation. Early Muslims placed emphasis on tauhid. They followed the Book of Allah. Reason and freedom were respected. There was scant preoccupation with tradition. Military jihad meant self-defense or fighting against persecution. With time, however, the growing prestige of tradition tainted tauhid. The Book of Allah was deserted. Reasoning deteriorated. Restrictions upon freedoms heralded the emergence of authoritarianism. Aggressive jihad replaced defensive jihad. The knowledge of revelation was corrupted and exegesis and jurisprudence and the sharia were tainted by problematic perceptions. These encompass the perceptions that that tradition possesses the authority to "judge," "abrogate" and even "replace" parts of revelation. Redressing these problems requires the affirmation of the preeminence of revelation, rehabilitation and reengagement of reason, the desacralization of tradition, rehabilitation of penal legislation, and the purification of exegesis and jurisprudence of shirk.

Book Islam and Other Religions

Download or read book Islam and Other Religions written by Irfan Omar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays assesses various dimensions of dialogue between Islam and other religions, especially Christianity. This book celebrates the work of Professor Mahmoud Ayoub and reflects the themes that are central in his scholarship spanned over the last three decades and which are more relevant than ever at the inauguration of the twenty-first century. The themes reflected are the Qur’an and hadith, theology and philosophy, and Islam’s interaction with other religions. Ayoub needs no introduction to those familiar with and engaged in inter-religious dialogue in general and Muslim-Christian-Jewish dialogue in particular. He is a well-known Muslim scholar and historian of religion, currently director of the Islamic studies program in the department of religion at Temple University in Philadelphia. His broad area of interest is of course Islamic studies but he has also exerted considerable scholarly efforts in comparative religion. As evidenced from Dr. Ayoub’s works, he moves with ease between philosophy and mysticism, scripture and tradition and between Islam and other religions. As a Muslim, Ayoub has provided a model of being religious which combines openness to others without compromising rigorous historical scholarship. Contributors to this volume include some of his close friends and colleagues, as well as former students both Muslim and Christian. This book was previously published as a special issue of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations.

Islamic history and anecdotes are part of everyday conversation in the Arab world. This book provides a fascinating journey into one of the biggest and probably most misinterpreted religions via anecdotes and facts about Islam and its history, the Qur'an, the prophet Muhammad and his traditions, the Dos and Don'ts for Muslims, and how Islam spread around the world, summarised in 500 questions and answers, which the author has derived from his own experiences. The author has lived in North Africa and the Middle East for ten years and immersed himself in Islamic culture and society. He gradually learned the things kids in the Arab world already know, but most people in other parts of the world never heard of, by talking to his neighbours, teachers, scholars and ordinary people in the street. This book explains Islam in its complexity. The author also addresses current topics: Islam in the West, women's issues and Jihad. It can be read without knowing Arabic. However, the author provides the fully vocalised Arabic source in addition to the English translation, which may be beneficial for Arabic speaking readers.

Book Minority Jurisprudence in Islam

Download or read book Minority Jurisprudence in Islam written by Susanne Olsson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to many Islamic jurists, the world is divided between dar al-Islam (the abode of Islam) and dar al-harb (the abode of war). This dual division of the world has led to a great amount of juridical discussion concerning what makes a territory part of dar al-Islam, what the status of Muslims living outside of this is, and whether they are obliged to obey Islamic jurisprudence. Susanne Olsson examines the differing understandings of dar al-Islam and dar al-harb, as well as related concepts, such as jihad and takfir. She thereby is able to explore how these concepts have been utilised, transformed and negotiated throughout history. As the subject of Muslims living in Europe is such a topical and sometimes controversial one, this book will appeal to researchers of modern Islam as integral to the Western experience.

Book The Essentials of Ibadi Islam

Download or read book The Essentials of Ibadi Islam written by Valerie J. Hoffman and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ibadi Islam is a distinct sect of Islam, neither Sunni nor Shi‘ite, that emerged in the early Islamic period and remains active today in small pockets of North Africa and as the dominant sect of Oman. Despite its antiquity, it has often been misunderstood and remains little known. Seeking to redress this gap and to introduce this Islamic school to the non-Arabic-speaking world, Hoffman offers the first book-length overview of Ibad.i theology published in English. Beginning with a concise overview of Ibadi history, Hoffman delineates the movement’s role in the development of Islamic thought, tracing its distinctive teachings and literary history. In the second section, she provides annotated translations of two complementary modern Ibadi theological texts. This unique volume elucidates Ibadi religious and political thought by allowing its tradition to speak for itself. The Essentials of Ibadi Islam gives readers, specialists and nonspecialists alike, a rare opportunity to understand the major teachings of Ibad.i Islam.

Book Takfir in Islamic Thought

Download or read book Takfir in Islamic Thought written by Hussam S. Timani and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the theological views on takfīr in classical and medieval Islamic thought, explores the Islamic context of the concept, and considers the following questions: In what context does the term appear in the Qur’ān and ḥadīths (the sayings of the Prophet Muḥammad)? In what circumstances did Muslim theologians engage in takfīr, and what were the social, religious, theological, and political implications on the society? How did the meaning of takfīr evolve in classical and later Islamic theology, and what justifications did prominent medieval Muslim theologians and jurists provide for declaring other Muslims kuffār? This book attempts to demonstrate how takfīr has evolved throughout the centuries from being a term used to condemn (and warn against) unacceptable actions to a term used on individuals and communities to strip them of their belief, dignity, and linkage to the Divine (i.e., declaring them unbelievers). This book also attempts to shed the light on how the theological discourse on takfīr in classical and medieval Islam has made its impact on twentieth- and twenty-first century groups.

  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book Nietzsche and Islam written by Roy Jackson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-03-12 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the light of current events, particularly the ‘post September 11th’ debates with much focus on aspects of the ‘clash of civilisation’ thesis, the issue of Islamic identity is a crucial one. Whilst Friedrich Nietzsche was addressing an audience of a different culture and age, his own originality, creativity, psychological, philological and historical insights allows for a fresh and enlightening understanding of Islam within the context of our modern era. In this book, Roy Jackson sets out to determine: Why did Nietzsche feel inclined to be so generous towards the Islamic tradition yet so critical of Western Christianity? How important was religion for Nietzsche’s views on such matters as moral and political philosophy and how does this help us to understand the Islamic response to modernity? How does Nietzsche’s distinctive outlook and methodology help us to understand such key Islamic paradigms as the Qur’an, the Prophet, and the ‘Rightly-Guided’ Caliphs? Nietzsche and Islam provides an original and fresh insight into Nietzsche’s views on religion and shows that his philosophy can make an important contribution to what is considered to be Islam’s key paradigms. As such it will be of interest to a diverse readership and will provide useful material for researchers when thinking about religion, Islam and the future.

Download or read book Islam without Europe written by Ahmad S. Dallal and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-04-20 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Replete with a cast of giants in Islamic thought and philosophy, Ahmad S. Dallal's pathbreaking intellectual history of the eighteenth-century Muslim world challenges stale views of this period as one of decline, stagnation, and the engendering of a widespread fundamentalism. Far from being moribund, Dallal argues, the eighteenth century--prior to systematic European encounters--was one of the most fertile eras in Islamic thought. Across vast Islamic territories, Dallal charts in rich detail not only how intellectuals rethought and reorganized religious knowledge but also the reception and impact of their ideas. From the banks of the Ganges to the shores of the Atlantic, commoners and elites alike embraced the appeals of Muslim thinkers who, while preserving classical styles of learning, advocated for general participation by Muslims in the definition of Islam. Dallal also uncovers the regional origins of most reform projects, showing how ideologies were forged in particular sociopolitical contexts. Reformists' ventures were in large part successful--up until the beginnings of European colonization of the Muslim world. By the nineteenth century, the encounter with Europe changed Islamic discursive culture in significant ways into one that was largely articulated in reaction to the radical challenges of colonialism.
