Book Historical Dictionary of Sri Lanka

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Sri Lanka written by Patrick Peebles and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sri Lanka has had a celebrated history, a long colonial past, and since independence in 1948 has passed through a series of crises and political experiments. It has had a remarkable record of voters turning out unpopular governments, often by sweeping margins. On 8 January 2015 voters again performed this feat when Maithripala Sirisena, representing a coalition of disparate parties, defeated Mahinda Rajapaksa for the presidency. Rajapaksa was turning the nation away from its democratic heritage towards authoritarianism and militarism. Independent Sri Lanka’s economy stagnated for decades before it began to grow in the 1980s. It has had significant economic growth since the end of the 26-year war against the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 2009. Although reconciliation between the Sinhalese Buddhist majority and Hindu, Muslim and Christian minorities seems distant, prospects for Sri Lanka seem better than they have been for decades. The Historical Dictionary of Sri Lanka contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Sri Lanka.

Book Resettlement Policy in Large Development Projects

Download or read book Resettlement Policy in Large Development Projects written by Ryo Fujikura and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydropower generation by construction of large dams attracts considerable attention as a feasible renewable energy source to meet the power demand in Asian cities. However, large development projects cause involuntary resettlement. Of the world’s forty to eighty million resettlers, many resettlers have been unable to rebuild their livelihood after relocation and have become impoverished. This book uniquely explores the long-term impacts of displacement and resettlement. It shows that long-term post-project evaluation is necessary to assess the rehabilitation and livelihood reconstruction of resettlers after relocation. It focuses on large dam projects in a number of Asian countries, including Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Turkey, Sri Lanka and Vietnam, which are often ignored in Displacement studies in favour of China or India. Drawing on a wealth of empirical data over ten years, it presents crucial factors for successful resettlement by analysing lessons learned. The range of countries allow for a diverse and complex set of factors and outcomes to be analysed. Many of the factors for successful resettlement recur despite the cases being different in implementation period and location. The book presents highly original findings gathered by local researchers in the field directly talking to resettlers who were relocated more than a decade ago. This original book is a unique resource for researchers and postgraduate students of development studies, environment, geography, sociology and anthropology. It also makes policy recommendations for future resettlement programs that are of great value to development policy makers, planners, water resources engineers and civil society protest groups.

Book Modeling Simulation and Control of a Medium Scale Power System

Download or read book Modeling Simulation and Control of a Medium Scale Power System written by Tharangika Bambaravanage and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the most important aspects of mathematical modeling, computer simulation, and control of medium-scale power systems. It discusses a number of practical examples based on Sri Lanka’s power system, one characterized by comparatively high degrees of variability and uncertainty. Recently introduced concepts such as controlled disintegration to maintain grid stability are discussed and studied using simulations of practical scenarios. Power systems are complex, geographically distributed, dynamical systems with numerous interconnections between neighboring systems. Further, they often comprise a generation mix that includes hydro, thermal, combined cycle, and intermittent renewable plants, as well as considerably extended transmission lines. Hence, the detailed analysis of their transient behaviors in the presence of disturbances is both highly theory-intensive and challenging in practice. Effectively regulating and controlling power system behavior to ensure consistent service quality and transient stability requires the use of various schemes and systems. The book’s initial chapters detail the fundamentals of power systems; in turn, system modeling and simulation results using Power Systems Computer Aided Design/Electromagnetic Transients including DC (PSCAD/EMTDC) software are presented and compared with available real-world data. Lastly, the book uses computer simulation studies under a variety of practical contingency scenarios to compare several under-frequency load-shedding schemes. Given the breadth and depth of its coverage, it offers a truly unique resource on the management of medium-scale power systems.

Book New Developments in Dam Engineering

Download or read book New Developments in Dam Engineering written by Martin Wieland and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 1248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of water resources is a key element in the socio-economic development of many regions in the world. Water availability and rainfall are unequally distributed both in space and time, so dams play a vital role, there being few viable alternatives for storing water. Dams hold a prime place in satisfying the ever-increasing demand for power, irrigation and drinking water, for protection of man, property and environment from catastrophic floods, and for regulating the flow of rivers. Dams have contributed to the development of civilization for over 2,000 years. Worldwide there are some 45,000 large dams listed by ICOLD, which have a height over 15 meters. Today, in western countries, where most of the water resources have been developed, the safety of the existing dams and measures for extending their economical life are of prime concern. In developing countries the focus is on the construction of new dams. The proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Dam Engineering includes contributions from 18 countries, and provides an overview of the state-of-the-art in hydropower development, new type dams, new materials and new technologies, dam and environment. Traditional areas, such as concrete dams and embankment dams, methods of analysis and design of dams, dam foundation, seismic analysis, design and safety, stability of dam and slope, dam safety monitoring and instrumentation, dam maintenance, and rehabilitation and heightening are also considered. The book is of special interest to scientists, researchers, engineers, and students working in dam engineering, dam design, hydropower development, environmental engineering, and structural hydraulics.

Book In Near Ruins

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nicholas B. Dirks
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9780816631223
  • Pages : 328 pages

Download or read book In Near Ruins written by Nicholas B. Dirks and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If culture is suspect, what of cultural theory? At a moment when culture's traditional caretakers -- humanism, philosophy, anthropology, and the nation-state -- are undergoing crisis and mutation, this volume charts the tensions and contradictions in the development and deployment of the concept of culture. A genuinely interdisciplinary venture, In Near Ruins brings together respected writers from the fields of history, anthropology, literary criticism, and communications. Together their essays present an intriguing picture of "culture" at the edges of humanism, of the politics of critical inquiry amid current social transformations, of the status and practice of historical knowledge in an age of theory. Skeptical of the concept of culture but fascinated with cultural forms, the authors take up diverse topics, from debates over sexuality in the contemporary United States to relations between empire, capitalism, and gender in nineteenth-century Britain; from poverty in U.S. inner cities to violence in war-torn Sri Lanka; from the operation of nostalgia on cultural practices in Japan to anthropological forms of state power in Indonesia and the writing of history in India. Linked by a common urge to think through the aesthetics and politics of particular social relations amid a variety of globalizing forces -- revolution, colonialism, nationalism, and the disciplinary institutions of the academy itself -- these writers contribute to the ongoing work of remapping the terrain of cultural analysis and reevaluating the stakes in such a daunting effort.
