Book The Dawn of War in South Korea 1947 1950

Download or read book The Dawn of War in South Korea 1947 1950 written by Kyu-hyun Jo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-18 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an analytical account of the April Third Massacre in Korea, a bloody confrontation between supporters of the Syngman Rhee Administration and those suspected (largely incorrectly) of being Communists, or members of the South Korean Workers' Party—the second largest Communist Party after Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule. As a result, some 80,000 villagers, fishermen, and policemen were killed. The book, drawing from a wide array of primary sources, ranging from South Korean governmental records, memoranda, memoirs, and recently unclassified documents, examines the role of the South Korean Workers' Party in the April Third Massacre on Jeju and how it shaped the origins of the Korean War. The author maps these origins of the Korean War from the outbreak of the April Third Massacre and through the ensuing chain of violence which included the Yo-su and Sun-ch'on Massacres of October 1948, engulfing the peninsula until 1949. Of interest to all scholars studying modern Korea, it is particularly relevant to historians focused on the Korean War, as well as political scientists and international relations experts interested in East Asian conflicts.

Book excerpt: The 2009 edition of the Korea yearbook contains concise overview articles covering domestic developments and the economy in both South and North Korea as well as inter-Korean relations and foreign relations of the two Koreas in 2008. A detailed chronology complements these articles. South Korea-related refereed articles in the 2009 edition deal with the internal politics of the Democratic Labour Party, the origins of the nuclear industry, industrial relations in the metals sector, Cheju island as a medical tourism hub, President Lee Myung-bak as seen through political cartoons, the comfort women movement's regionalisation process and perceptions of North Korean women. Additional refereed articles analyse the reliability of North Korean survey data, the migration experience of North Korean refugees, and sports-related cooperation between the two Koreas.

Book The State of Asia

Download or read book The State of Asia written by Lawrence K. Rosinger and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State of Asia (1951) examines the developments in Asia in the key post-war period of five years following 1945. Prewar and wartime background are provided for each country surveyed, as the international significance of the developments in the region, from Korea to Pakistan, are analysed. The chief emphasis is on political and economic developments, foreign relations and the impact of Asian issues on the world, but information on population, resources and geography are also included. The book is a series of independent analyses by leading specialists in particular fields – it is in no sense an effort at a consensus, but seeks to make clear the main trends in the region.

Book Unequal Partners in Peace and War

Download or read book Unequal Partners in Peace and War written by Jongsuk Chay and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-03-30 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States and the Republic of Korea have managed to forge a strong working relationship both in wartime and in peacetime, despite an inequality in power between them, through fulfillment of their respective responsibilities. Chay explores how Korean and American actions and inaction affected relations between the two and within the international context of the Korean War. He focuses on how and why war might have been avoided or resolved differently as a result of poor choices and missed opportunities. Using Korean sources, as well as Chinese and Russian materials, this study provides valuable new insights into the relationship between these two unequal powers. The course of the Korean War swung like a pendulum powered by two outside interventions: that of the United States, made largely due to the symbolic value of Korea; and that of China, an action taken mainly for security reasons. Chay identifies key actions, including the division of Korea along the 38th Parallel, the 1949 troop withdrawal, and the failure to build an adequate military and economic deterrent in the South, as events that, had they not occurred, might have influenced the final outcome of the conflict. Restraint on the part of the United States and China and the role of the Korean peninsula as a geographic buffer zone ultimately prevented either side from gaining control of the entire peninsula, resulting in a stalemate. While issues of relative strength and weakness hindered U.S.-Korean cooperation after the end of the Second World War, once war came to the region the two powers built a successful partnership that addressed the national interests of both parties.
