Download or read book The 1982 World s Fair in Hindsight written by Jack Neely and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Knoxville's six-month 1982 World Fair has been called the most successful American exposition since the 1930s and, if judged by attendance among fairs officially sanctioned by the bureau International des Expositions in Paris, it is that... Still, the fair is often derided, memorably in a 1998 episode of the Simpsons. Worse than that, it's been ignored. In the years since it closed, very little has been published about the Knoxville International Energy Exposition an its legacy. Did it make a difference? Was it "historic," as its ads promised? the Knoxville History Project, in partnership with the committee with the University of Tennessee's history department, offer this brief introduction to a big subject."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: No event so changed and reshaped East Tennessee and the city of Knoxville as did World War II. From the hills and hollows of the Smoky Mountains to the banks of the Tennessee River, men and women from all walks of life volunteered or were called into service to assist with the nationwide war effort. As with the First World War, entirely new industries sprang to life in Knoxville, and the old ones were changed forever by the new demands for equipment, sailors, soldiers, and supplies. It was a tumultuous time of upheaval as people were removed from family homes in the Smoky Mountains and forced to move to Knoxville to earn a living. This is a collection of photographs gathered from the families of the men and women who served in World War II as both civilians and soldiers.
