Download or read book The Descendants of John Grant and Mary Sabean written by George Allen Grant M.A. and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Nova Scotia, the focus of study about Scottish settlers, including the Grants, has been on the eastern counties of the province, and on Cape Breton Island. In the United States, when Grants are mentioned, a significant concern seems to be to find a genealogical or DNA link to Ulysses Grant. No one has seriously examined and written about the Grant families of southwestern Nova Scotia. That leaves a space for me to act in, and to develop a narrative history of a family founded in the soil, strengthened by the forest, and challenged by the sea environments that comprise the fundamental essence of Nova Scotia. And so, my passion has been to tell the story of my family and their relatives in southwestern Nova Scotia and to follow the paths of many of them to New England (especially to Massachusetts). This study will fulfill an implicit task left to me by my Aunt Ruth Dexter. That is the essence of why I have spent so much of my retirement on this task. But there is more to come as I follow suggestive clues left by my ancestors, or seek to overcome “brick walls” that stump every genealogist from time to time. When I began this project, my aim was simply: “To collate and present a family history of the line descending from John Grant and Mary Sabean to myself.” If I had stayed within that framework this book would have been much shorter and less interesting. As it turns out, there are many fascinating aspects to our story. Not only will you read about the hard-working and courageous children of John and Mary, but you will follow them and their offspring as they find love and marriage, sometimes with close or distant cousins. • You will ride or sail with them as they migrate within Nova Scotia and outward to New England. • You will wonder at their expressions of faith and sense their hidden, internal conflict as they make religious choices based on factors we can only imagine (spirituality, simplicity, availability, or energetic missionaries), reflected in obituaries, burial sites, or their answers to census questions. • You will share their sorrow at the deaths of loved ones through accident, disease, suicide, loss at sea or in the service of their country in war, particularly in World War I. • You will learn of their varied occupations, trades and professions, from farming, fishing and forestry to shoemaking, carpentry and sailing, nursing and teaching. • You will join them as they strive to become master mariners, volunteer in their churches, train young women with the YWCA in China, or succor the sick and wounded with the Red Cross in Siberia – follow them south to Boston and the Caribbean, east to Europe and across the Pacific to Asia. Only then you will come to understand why, at its core, my passion has been to be the voice of my direct ancestors and extended family within a defined framework of time and place, to record their activities where sources allow, in essence, to be the story they could not write.

Book excerpt: Much more than a simple portrait of a pioneer family, this chronicle is actually a history of Bristol from a different perspective. It would be virtually impossible to write a complete history of this city without including a record of the pioneer King family. Likewise, it would be very difficult to write of this family and not become involved in general Bristol history.

Download or read book Mario Lanza written by David Bret and published by Aurum Press Limited. This book was released on 2014-02-21 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maria Callas called him the greatest tenor who ever lived. Vocally and technically, Mario Lanza was a genius. Like Callas, Lanza's was a phenomenal talent complimented by a more than monstrous ego. Suffering from what would today be diagnosed as bi-polar disorder, he lived virtually his whole life with his finger firmly pressed on the self-destruct button. Too undisciplined to remain in opera, Lanza found himself sucked into the Hollywood whirlpool, engulfed by the opulent lifestyle this offered: easy money, good living, and limitless food, sex and drugs, to which he became increasingly addicted. Lanza took his frustration out of others, frequently launching an uncontrollable temper on those around him and earning himself a reputation as one of the movie stars who were most disliked by their peers in the studio system years. Lanza's scatological pranks were as legendary as his drinking, womanising and gorging sprees, each one followed by crash diets and periods of dark depression and self-loathing which made him virtually impossible to control. Yet he produced arguably the finest tenor recordings of popular music and opera of the last century as well as some classic films, including The Great Caruso and Serenade. In Sublime Serenade, David Bret uncompromisingly but lovingly, and in his unique and celebrated style, tells the Lanza story, from his birth in a poor district of Philadelphia, to his death in Rome 38 years later and his involvement with the Mafia. A must for all music and movie fans alike. David Bret was born in Paris and is a leading celebrity biographer. His many acclaimed books include biographies of Edith Piaf, Doris Day, Clark Gable and Joan Crawford. He lives in Yorkshire.
Download or read book Golden Girl The Autobiography of the Greatest Ever Ladies Darts Player written by Trina Gulliver and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2008-01-07 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trina Gulliver is indisputably the finest ladies' darts player in the world. With an amazing seven consecutive Lakeside Ladies' World Championsship titles under her belt, this inspirational woman can lay claim to being the most phenomenal player of all time. But it hasn't always been a victorious check-outs for this Warwickshire girl. Qualifying as a joiner at the age of nineteen, Trina soon set up her own business and had her first taste of making it in what has traditionally been a man's world. Her calm head, keen eye and steady hand proved to be useful skills in this trade - and would prove priceless when stepped up to the oche as a professional player. Always a lover of the game, Trina held her first 'arrow' at the age of two, and after some success later in the Warwickshire County side she went full-time as a professional player. Without any sponsorship in her first year, she struggled to make ends meet as she drove all over Europe to play. But her determination to get to the top saw her make it to number ten in the world, and she finally hit the bullseye in the form of a sponsor. Twelve months later she was number one - where she remains to this day. Fiercely passionate about her sport, Trina has long been an outspoken critic of the prize money in the women's game compared to the men's, and has done sterling work in helping to raise the profile of the ladies' game. Professional to the core, Trina works as hard as the top male players on her game, and is a role model to women in the sport. Golden Girl is the story of a woman whose talent, grit and determination saw her realise her dream. Heart-warming and inspirational, this book will appeal to darts lovers and anyone interested in a story of success against the odds.
