Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kingdom of Canada, Imperial Federation, the Colonial Conferences the Alaska Boundary, and Other Essays I am very glad to have an opportunity of addressing the Canadian Club, but I find much greater gratification in the fact that there is a Canadian Club to address. Effects do not occur without causes, and it is interesting to inquire into the meaning of the somewhat sudden rise of these clubs, of this phenomenal desire for the study of our political situation, of this simultaneous eagerness for enlightenment with reference to the problems that confront us. To my mind the explanation is very simple. Canada has commenced to realize herself, to believe in herself, and to recognize that for her, too, there is a principal part to play upon the stage of the world. Canada has become conscious of the feelings and aspirations and the strong strivings of strenuous manhood, and, on the other hand, of the utter impossibility of full expression and assertion in mere colonial status. Divine discontent (the necessary pre-condition of all improvement), in regard to her political semi-servitude, has taken strong hold upon Canada, and she is taking stock, and extending the figures, and considering where she now is, and what her future is to be. In my opinion that is the meaning of these clubs; not social clubs are they, nor political, but student clubs; meetings, at short intervals, of serious men for the purpose of helping one another to resolve those problems of national life which are now pressing themselves upon us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ekklesia: Three Inquiries in Church and State offers a New World rejoinder to the largely Europe-centered academic discourse on church and state. In contrast to what is often assumed, in the Americas the relationship between church and state has not been one of freedom or separation but one of unstable and adaptable collusion. Ekklesia sees in the settler states of North and South America alternative patterns of conjoined religious and political power, patterns resulting from the undertow of other gods, other peoples, and other claims to sovereignty. These local challenges have led to a continuously contested attempt to realize a church-minded state, a state-minded church, and the systems that develop in their concert. The shifting borders of their separation and the episodic conjoining of church and state took new forms in both theory and practice. The first of a closely linked trio of essays is by Paul Johnson, and offers a new interpretation of the Brazilian community gathered at Canudos and its massacre in 1896–97, carried out as a joint churchstate mission and spectacle. In the second essay, Pamela Klassen argues that the colonial churchstate relationship of Canada came into being through local and national practices that emerged as Indigenous nations responded to and resisted becoming “possessions” of colonial British America. Finally, Winnifred Sullivan’s essay begins with reflection on the increased effort within the United States to ban Bibles and scriptural references from death penalty courtrooms and jury rooms; she follows with a consideration of the political theological pressure thereby placed on the jury that decides between life and death. Through these three inquiries, Ekklesia takes up the familiar topos of “church and state” in order to render it strange.

Book Letters to Limbo

Download or read book Letters to Limbo written by Robert L. Borden and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1971-12-15 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Laird Borden, Prime Minister of Canada from 1911 to 1920, was born in the village of Grand Pré, Nova Scotia, in 1854. He practiced law in the province before entering politics. In 1896 he was elected to the House of Commons, and in 1901 was chosen leader of the Liberal-Conservative party. After his retirement in 1920, Sir Robert kept on the sidelines of the political debate, although he was often consulted by those in power and was frequently tempted to express his views on current issues. During the last four years of his life, 1933 to 1937, he recorded some of his thoughts and experiences in the form of ‘Letters to Limbo.’ Some of these he read over and revised, others he left as dictated. The wide range of his interests is revealed in the topics: union government for Canada? / reminiscences of household pets / inaccuracy of the press / bestowal of honours in Canada / business conditions in the United States / Dean of Canterbury and Social Credit / appraisal of Sir Arthur Currie / King Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson. All the letters but four are presented in this volume. They reveal some of the inner thoughts and strongest beliefs of Sir Robert, giving an insight into the man and his times. Whimsical and humourous, or serious and well-argued, these letters paint a portrait in words of one of the greatest figures in Canadian history.
