Taken from the Surname Data Base Last Name Origin from the internet; The surname Keys is English and was first recorded as belonging to the family of Roger Keys. The recorded information was dated 1275. For simplicity, I have in most cases used the spelling Keys or Keyes. The Keys (families) were started by Milley Keys, except for one family in this area and that family is listed in Chapter 7 of this document. There are some instances where the two families inter-married. The 2nd family was the decedents of William Keys from Virginia perhaps a cousin of Milley. (Evidence points to Milleys ancestors being from England and dating back to the mid 1650s.)

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy: Robert Keyes of Watertown, 1633, Solomon Keyes of Newbury and Chelmsford 1653, and Their Descendants, Also, Others of the Names After some years of study into the history of the Keyes family, in order to ascertain my own remote ancestry and connections, and without a thought of putting into print the result of my research, I yielded to the wishes of many of my name, and concluded to put the (at that time) scanty information I had gained, into a short, informal pamphlet. This may account for the want of consistent, artistic arrangement in the work, which, as I advanced and the field opened before me, I regretted, too late But we do not expect from the pioneer, in new countries or new fields, what must of necessity belong to maturer knowledge and more complete development; and I am a pioneer in the Genealogy of the Keyes family. In seeking my own ancestry, my first idea was to look for it in the line, at the head of which stood Robert of Watertown, and much material had been accumulated, and much advance made, before grave doubts arose in my mind (as to what has been assumed by many of those who have any knowledge of our Genealogy, namely) whether Solomon of Newbury and Chelmsford, was the son of Robert. Those doubts have not been, and probably cannot be, solved, at present. I feel sure that a relationship existed, and, until the mist enveloping their early history be cleared away, let us content ourselves, with having the Genealogy of their descendants. The records of later emigrants have been added, both to save the trouble of farther research in that direction in order to find the missing links in our own history, and because among them are names we might be proud to place beside our own. I would remark that the numbers attached to individual names, in the regular series, have no significance as to the prominence of the individual, but are inserted to give an idea of the extent of the family, and for reference. Many names were received too late for numbering in their proper place, without breaking the general order of numbering.
