Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Whole French LanguageThe labours of philologists will then lose something of their importance. A few professional men, 0 eying their calling, will remain depositaries of the dialects of by-gone ages; as we now see antiquarians collect and religiously preserve the wrecks of former societies. To enumerate the facts on which I ground this prevision would be a superfluous digression from my subject. To those men who have bent their thoughts on Unity, I need not say that the unity of weight, of measure, and of language is as inevitable as the unity of mathematical laws. To those who judge with the heart, a guide more infallible than the understanding, I need not say that universal fraternity cannot be completely established on the globe, until it has overthrown the barriers which dialects, more efficient than mountains and seas, have set up between men. As, for the enthusiastic admirers of the past, or those optimists who, contented with the present, are averse to every improvement, I will not attempt to convince them; I should only expose myself to be regarded as a utopist and, besides, the time is not yet come to insist upon the subject.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Fables: With a Key, and a Treatise on Pronunciation, for Those Who Begin to Read the French Language; Being the Fourth Elementary Work in the Complete Course of French Instruction Nothing favors more the success Of beginners in any language, than the judicious selection Of a good and suit able book. Many works now extant are very far from being satisfactory in this respect. Some are pompously written, but difficult to be understood, which make us waste too much time; others manifest a complete ignorance Of the language in which they are Offered to us, and corrupt our taste. Unfortunately, the latter kind Of works prevails at this moment, and is as prejudicial to progress as bad food to the health Of the body. Both master and pupil must feel the great importance Of this truth; the former when he is reluctantly obliged to use the first book which he finds to initiate a young American into the knowledge Of the French Language, and which does not answer his purpose; and the latter when he tries to take his first steps, which are always very hard. Experience teaches us that every thing appears difficult to the learner Of a new language, even the most simple and easy sentences, and sometimes the slightest Obstacle is able to discourage him for ever. Therefore I have given a Key, which is a mute monitor to assist him, in the absence of his master, in the preparation Of his lesson. These considerations are strong enough to induce a master, proud Of'the improvement of his pupils, to supply this desideratum. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Key to the First French Book: Containing the Pronunciation, Translation and Grammar of the French Text, With Explanation of Idioms In a book designed for self-instruction, it may seem ah surd to state at the outset that a speaking knowledge of a language can hardly be obtained from books. It is evident that a language consists of sounds and that one can no more learn a sound from an explanation than one can get a correct idea of a flavour from a description a sound must be heard, a colour seen, a flavour tasted, an odour smelled. There are hardly any sounds in one lan guage perfectly identical with those of another language; there is merely a more or less close resemblance between them; you must therefore hear the foreign sounds before you can produce them correctly. Phonographs will not do for this purpose, not only because their reproduction of at least some sounds is rather imperfect, but also because the ear makes the foreign sounds similar to those with which it is familiar in your mother tongue, unless a teacher draws your attention to the peculiarity of that' particular sound and drills you until you hear it and utter it correctly. Furthermore, in order to understand and speak a lan guage, the sounds reaching the ear must be so intimately connected with the mental impressions (ideas) that the lat ter are spontaneously and immediately made or awakened as soon as the former 1s heard, and the ideas in their turn must, through direct connection with the organs of speech, cause the proper expression to be immediately on your tongue's end. The normal way of learning a foreign language is, therefore, to have a native teacher (or, still better, several teach ers alternating) who speaks to you and makes you speak the foreign language only, teaching the expressions of concrete meaning by object lessons, those of abstract meaning through association (context), grammar and idioms through examples and practical drill. These principles form the basis of the Berlitz Method. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Hossfeld s New Practical Method for Learning the French Language Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hossfeld's New Practical Method for Learning the French Language It is by the careful translation of this Exercise, as well as by the reading and learning by heart of the Conversations and the Dialogues, that the student will become acquainted with the idioms of the French Language. Lists of such idioms are dry and very soon forgotten by the pupil but when framed in useful conversations or pleasant anecdotes, they make a stronger im pression on the mind and remain fixed in the memory. We specially recommend to masters the use of the Keys, printed on single leaves of strong paper - one lesson on each leaf. One of these leaves is to be given to each pupil after the exercises have been worked out, so that he may himself see and correct the mistakes (if any) he has made. This having been done, the corrected exercises and the Key should be returned to the master for revision. The correction by the pupil himself has been proved to be one of the most successful features of this method it obliges the pupil to go a second time over his work, and by this means the mistakes he has made are vividly brought before him. As a result, the same mistakes are less likely to recur, and the masters will be spared a long, tedious, and relatively fruitless work. Book A New Method of Learning the French Language Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New Method of Learning the French Language Classic Reprint written by Jean Gustave Keetels and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Method of Learning the French Language In Parts Second and Fourth, the practical predominates; in Parts Third and Fifth, the theoretical. They are so far independent of each other, that the several parts need not be studied in the order in which they stand. The arrangement, however, was suggested by a long course of experience, and adopted after mature delibera tion. The practical develops principles, elements, and facts, in natural succession, but without regard to scientific method; the theoretical embraces, in a connected view, and in systematic order, the cognate parts that have been studied separately. By this plan, the treatment of the verbs is presented to the mind, unembarrassed with other dimculties; the student, once familiar with their forms, may enter upon a course of reading-lessons, which adds variety to the exercises, and increases his interest in the study of the language. Book The Essentials of the French Language Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Essentials of the French Language Classic Reprint written by Peter M. Clerc and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of the French Language This abridged French course was composed at the request and for the use of some Fren'ch students who wanted to learn, in a very limited space of time, all that is essential in the language and most commonly used in social and commercial relations. According to their information, existing French methods were either too elementary or too complicated, too incomplete or too voluminous. They wanted something short, clear, practical, substantial, and devoid, as much as possible, of pedantic technicalities. While in the state of manuscript, this little French course was studied by them and proved to be satisfactory. They found it easy to learn and interest ing, and, in a few months, were able to express themselves in French on many subjects of daily occurrence. Encouraged by their success, I showed my manuscript to pupils who had studied French with me for years with the aid of the old methods. All of them took a liking to my little essay and wanted to study it. Finally the conclusion was drawn that a book of this kind was needed in America, and I was advised to prepare it for print.
