Book Key Factors Influencing First Nation Youth Perspectives on Forest Management and Capacity Development in Northern Ontario Canada

Download or read book Key Factors Influencing First Nation Youth Perspectives on Forest Management and Capacity Development in Northern Ontario Canada written by Paul A. Robitaille and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Nation youth often play a central, though indirect, role in Ontario's forest sector as the beneficiaries of capacity-building arrangements, employment opportunities and cultural-retention initiatives. Correspondingly, recent peer-reviewed literature has emphasized the need to engage First Nation youth directly regarding the forestry-related issues that affect them. Such steps will help to ensure that forest policy and youth-focused capacity development initiatives fully realize their intended benefits and remain relevant into the future. Despite this imperative, the direct engagement of First Nation youth remains a major outstanding gap in the research. This exploratory study endeavoured to fill the current knowledge gap by directly engaging First Nations youth participants in the First Nations Natural Resources Youth Employment Program through semi-structured interviews and focus group activities. Using inductive, qualitative grounded theory analysis, four key perspective-influencing factors were identified: relationship; natural and socioeconomic cycles; intergenerational equity; and the resource trap. These explanatory factors indicate that participants' thought processes and worldviews are deeply grounded in and affected by the unique historical experiences, sociocultural traditions and contemporary lived realities of their First Nation communities. Forest sector relationships, policies and capacity development initiatives in Ontario could thus be supported through the adoption of several specific policy directions, including: mandating comprehensive social impact analysis as a component of forest management planning; including specific funding for education and employment supports within broader capacity development initiatives; and supporting additional opportunities for culturally-rooted, land-based, experiential learning for First Nation youth.

Book Changing the Culture of Forestry in Canada

Download or read book Changing the Culture of Forestry in Canada written by Marc G. Stevenson and published by University of Alberta Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing institutions and rules of engagement for sustainable forest management (SFM) in Canada are not designed to accommodate the rights or interests of its Aboriginal peoples. In recognition of this, there has emerged a community of Aboriginal partners and academic researchers committed to changing forestry practices, institutions, and policies. They have collectively undertaken research to address the needs, rights, and interests of forest-dependent Aboriginal communities, with the intention of producing knowledge and skill sets needed to reform forest and resource development sectors. This is the first of two volumes that will highlight the most current and critical research undertaken by this community of practice. While this book and upcoming companion volume are aimed directly at Canada's forest sector, the implications of this research should be of considerable interest and value to all who have a vested interest in natural resource development and management on lands where Aboriginal peoples assert constitutionally protected rights and interests. By attempting to create the ethical space for Aboriginal peoples in building new institutions and policies for their engagement in SFM, this volume addresses some of the most pressing environmental and social issues that Canadians face today.

Book Forests Postsecondary Education and Aboriginal People

Download or read book Forests Postsecondary Education and Aboriginal People written by Peter N. Duinker and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1996 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aboriginal people in Canada are increasingly expressing a desire for forestry education opportunities, yet few post- secondary institutions have yet responded to this need. It is anticipated that Aboriginal groups will frequently enter into partnership arrangements with colleges and universities for delivery of forestry education to Aboriginal students, and for delivery of Aboriginal forestry concepts to all students. This report presents a framework for such a partnership, from early explorations through program design and delivery to ongoing long-term relationships. The framework consists of a goal, a set of principles, and guidance on partnership development. The framework has been developed through consultations with Aboriginal people in northern Ontario, but is offered for use anywhere in Canada.

Book Building Common Ground

Download or read book Building Common Ground written by Melanie Zurba and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, First Nations in Canada have been marginalized with regards to the governance of forests. This has contributed to racial tensions in places such as northwestern Ontario, where First Nations and settlers have come into conflict over land allocations and forestry practices, causing a great need for reconciliation within the institutions built around forests. Recent socio-economic shifts have influenced forest tenure reform in Ontario, and in the northwest this has contributed in part to examples of collaborative forest governance involving First Nations, as well as First Nations involvement in the business side of forest management. This research used a case study approach and considered two interconnected case studies. The first is Wincrief Forestry Products Ltd., a forest products company that is 49% industry owned and 51% First Nations owned. The second is the Miitigoog General Partner Inc., a larger collaborative organization (inclusive of the first) that was set up to manage the Kenora Forest through a Sustainable Forestry License with decision-making authority shared equally by First Nation and industry partners. The purpose of my research was to understand the implications of transformative learning within cross-cultural settings, particularly how such learning can inform collaborative governance of shared land and resources. Qualitative methods were used, including document review and semi-structured interviews with key informants and those involved in governance [n=43]. Data related to governance were analyzed using institutional mapping, and other data were coded according to the learning and transitional justice literature. Findings are presented as learning outcomes and processes, and contextualized forms of learning relating to cross-cultural collaboration. The research makes several contributions to understanding governance, learning and reconciliation within the context of cross-cultural forest management. Key results included evidence of the importance of informal learning and learning together prior to formal collaboration. Another key result was that learning outcomes may depend on when partners enter the collaboration, and in relation to this that working through initial conflicts were an important aspect of learning through collaboration. This research highlights the importance of learning-by-doing, connections between culture and learning, and the importance of "two-row" (non-assimilative) and decolonizing approaches to understanding cross-cultural learning.

Book excerpt: "The report, 'Make It Safe: Canada's Obligation to End the First Nations Water Crisis,' documents the impacts of serious and prolonged drinking water and sanitation problems for thousands of indigenous people--known as "First Nations"--living on reserves. It assesses why there are problems with safe water and sanitation on reserves, including a lack of binding water quality regulations, erratic and insufficient funding, faulty or sub-standard infrastructure, and degraded source waters. The federal government's own audits over two decades show a pattern of overpromising and underperforming on water and sanitation for reserves"--Publisher's description.
