Book National Capacity in Forestry Research

Download or read book National Capacity in Forestry Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-06-21 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests are major components of the earth's natural resources and they are increasingly critical to the welfare of the U.S. economy, environment, and population. Desires to improve forest management and productivity, preserve biodiversity, maintain ecologic integrity, and provide societal services, such as recreation and tourism, necessitate a strong forestry-research base. Given the clear importance of forestry research in sustaining forests for the future, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service asked the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources of the National Academies to undertake a study of the nation's capacity in forestry research. The Committee on National Capacity in Forestry Research was appointed to carry out the study, which was conducted to review the current expertise and status of forestry research and to examine the approaches of natural resources education and forestry-research organizations to meet future needs.

Book CIFOR Strategy 2016 2025 Stepping up to the new climate and development agenda

Download or read book CIFOR Strategy 2016 2025 Stepping up to the new climate and development agenda written by Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since CIFOR last presented a 10-year strategy in 2008, we find ourselves in a world with continually evolving development and environment challenges. Millions of hectares of tropical forests have been converted to agriculture, degraded landscapes amount to nearly 2 billion hectares, and inequality has grown in countries around the world. Yet, there is reason to be optimistic: forest expansion and restoration are gaining ground, the rate of deforestation is slowing, and awareness of the importance of forests is spreading among governments, corporations and the global public In 2015, key developments such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement formed the basis of a new global development framework, at the forefront of which is forestry and landscapes. CIFOR’s 2016-2025 strategy builds explicitly on this new framework, defining the ways in which our forestry research, capacity development and engagement will support and inform the emerging development agenda.

  • Author : John Stanturf
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-11-28
  • ISBN : 9400753268

Download or read book Forest Landscape Restoration written by John Stanturf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restoration ecology, as a scientific discipline, developed from practitioners’ efforts to restore degraded land, with interest also coming from applied ecologists attracted by the potential for restoration projects to apply and/or test developing theories on ecosystem development. Since then, forest landscape restoration (FLR) has emerged as a practical approach to forest restoration particularly in developing countries, where an approach which is both large-scale and focuses on meeting human needs is required. Yet despite increased investigation into both the biological and social aspects of FLR, there has so far been little success in systematically integrating these two complementary strands. Bringing experts in landscape studies, natural resource management and forest restoration, together with those experienced in conflict management, environmental economics and urban studies, this book bridges that gap to define the nature and potential of FLR as a truly multidisciplinary approach to a global environmental problem. The book will provide a valuable reference to graduate students and researchers interested in ecological restoration, forest ecology and management, as well as to professionals in environmental restoration, natural resource management, conservation, and environmental policy.

Book Capacity Needs Assessment of CIFOR ICRAF and their partners for the implementation of the CGIAR Research Program on Forestry Trees and Agroforestry FTA

Download or read book Capacity Needs Assessment of CIFOR ICRAF and their partners for the implementation of the CGIAR Research Program on Forestry Trees and Agroforestry FTA written by Bourne, M. and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA), led by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), focuses on the sustainable management of forests, trees and agroforestry systems. Strengthening the capacity of forestry, trees and agroforestry research, policy and implementing institutions and their staff is critical to FTA’s mission and is embedded in its work. Capacity development is a long-term process whereby individuals, organizations and their networks improve their systems, resources, skills and knowledge. This becomes reflected in their capacity to perform functions and solve problems to better address national and sub-national development objectives. Capacity development enables research and development organizations, individuals, and their networks to achieve impact. This capacity needs assessment was conducted in 2018 to identify the capacity needs of World Agroforestry (ICRAF) and CIFOR to achieve the research objectives and targets specified in the FTA II proposal 2017–2021, including the amended FP2 proposal. The capacity needs assessment focused on four key areas for analysis: partnerships, networking, resource mobilization and human resource capacities. The analysis and recommendations contained within this document result from data collated from more than 70 interviews conducted with flagship and cluster leaders and key actors within the FTA II management teams and partner organizations.

This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forest, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA) Capacity Development (CapDev) Plan of Action for 2020/2022 specifies a set of objectives and activities that are aligned to CIFOR, ICRAF, Bioversity International and FTA’s CapDev strategies. It benefits from the analyses of the CGIAR–IEA CapDev evaluation findings and recommendations; CIFOR and CGIAR System Management Board’s responses to the same; a capacity needs assessment of CIFOR, ICRAF and their partners for the implementation of the CGIAR Research Program on Forestry, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA) Phase II, 2017–2021; lessons learned during the implementation of IFPRI’s Capacity Strengthening 1985–2010; ICRAF’s Capacity Development Strategy 2013–2018; Bioversity International’s Gender Research Fellowship Programme and Forest Genetic Resources Training Guide; and a literature review. It is a living document and will change to reflect changes in strategies of FTA Centers and the CGIAR.

Book Forestry Research

Download or read book Forestry Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests are valuable in our daily lives, crucial to our nation's ecomony, and integral to the long-term health of the environment. Yet, forestry research has been critically underfunded, and the data generated under current research programs is not enough to meet the diverse needs of our society. Forestry Research provides a research agenda that should yield the information we need to develop responsible policies for forest use and management. In this consensus of forestry experts, the volume explores: The diverse and competing concerns of the timber industry, recreational interests, and wildlife and environmental organizations. The gap between our need for information and the current output of the forestry research program. Areas of research requiring attention: biology of forest organisms, ecosystem function and management, human-forest interactions, wood as raw material, and international trade and competition. Forestry Research is an important book of special interest to federal and state policymakers involved in forestry issues, research managers, researchers, faculty, and students in the field.
