Book Crossing the Border

Download or read book Crossing the Border written by Sharon A. Roger Hepburn and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1849, the Reverend William King and fifteen of his former slaves founded the Canadian settlement of Buxton on a 9,000-acre block of land in Ontario set aside for sale to blacks. Although initially opposed by some neighbouring whites, their town grew steadily in population and stature with the backing of the Presbyterian Church of Canada and various philanthropics. A developed agricultural community that supported three schools, four churches, a hotel, and a post office, Buxton was home to almost seven hundred residents at its height. The settlement (which still exists today) remained all black until 1860, when its land was opened to purchase by whites. Sharon A. Roger Hepburn's Crossing the Border tells the story of Buxton's settlers, united in their determination to live free from slavery and legal repression. It is the most comprehensive study to address life in a black community in Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eschewing the often romanticized Underground Railroad narrative that portrays southern Ontario as the welcoming destination of Blacks fleeing from slavery, The Promised Land reveals the Chatham-Kent area as a crucial settlement site for an early Black presence in Canada. The contributors present the everyday lives and professional activities of individuals and families in these communities and highlight early cross-border activism to end slavery in the United States and to promote civil rights in the United States and Canada. Essays also reflect on the frequent intermingling of local Black, White, and First Nations people. Using a cultural studies framework for their collective investigations, the authors trace physical and intellectual trajectories of Blackness that have radiated from southern Ontario to other parts of Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, and Africa. The result is a collection that represents the presence and diffusion of Blackness and inventively challenges the grand narrative of history.

Book Cloth and Clay

Download or read book Cloth and Clay written by Gail Ferguson and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-07-12 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cloth and Clay: a Davison-Ferguson History is the story of two immigrant families united by marriage in nineteenth century Ontario. Traced back to their earliest known origins in North East Scotland and in Yorkshire, England and County Donegal and County Cork in Ireland, the narrative probes the challenges they faced in their homeland, reveals why they made the decision to emigrate and illustrates how they became established in the pottery and tailoring trades. Cloth and Clay explores the local history of both Hamilton and London, Ontario as the story of the Davisons and Fergusons unfolds. It is a well researched investigation of two families within the broader immigrant experience in Canada
