Book Our Heroes in Our Defense Labette County Kansas Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Heroes in Our Defense Labette County Kansas Classic Reprint written by W. H. Lightfoot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Heroes in Our Defense, Labette County, Kansas When we search the record of our state and nation, and compare Labette County's record we are proud of our boys, our women folk, our children and our men - Labette County has never been found wanting. In presenting this book to the people of the country the publishers have attempted in some small measure to bring before them in compact form, an all too brief story of their own community, coupled with illustrations and a pictorial history of some of our patriots who have pledged their all their very lives that Liberty may live and Right may Triumph. Within the covers of this book we have attempted to set forth what Labette County and her people typify. (personal details and records of individual acts of patriotism is lacking because of the removal from this locality of many who partici pated in the world struggle.) If we have succeeded the success is due not to us, not to the typographer who prepared this book, but to the mothers and fathers who raised these sons, for the highest and greatest service to Humanity and to their individual efforts in backing them at home. Book American Hero Kansas Heritage

Download or read book American Hero Kansas Heritage written by Clyde W. Toland and published by . This book was released on 2022-03 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for Toland's research and writing . . . "An engrossing, engaging, and superbly written account of 'Fearless Fred' Funston's formative years in rural Kansas, which molded the individual who would go on to command forces in the Philippines, earn a Medal of Honor, and ultimately command in 1917 the largest US Army since the Civil War. Clyde Toland's narrative clearly reflects Toland's life-long interest in Frederick Funston and Allen County, his impressive capabilities as a researcher, and his incisive analytical skills as a lawyer. The product of his work is a truly delightful read!"-General David Petraeus, US Army (Ret.), former Commander of the Surge in Iraq, US Central Command, and Coalition Forces in Afghanistan and former Director of the CIA "Many are familiar with the Funston name due to Frederick Funston's famed military career, but his early life and adventures were just as noteworthy. Indeed, this part of his life was sometimes more exciting, if that is possible, and it was critical to his later success. No one is more eminently qualified to write about the young Frederick Funston than Clyde Toland. Clyde is, hands down, the leading Funston scholar, with decades of research and curation experience with the subject. It is wonderful to see Clyde's work come together in a new book series on Funston. In this volume, Clyde does not merely rely on the same repeated stories, but on a wide array of extensive research, which he critically examined for accuracy. His meticulous research and polished writing style create an indispensable book. I savored reading this book, including reading the detailed notes. Clyde's work on Funston is certain to become the seminal study on the subject."-Jarrett Robinson, BA History, MS International Relations, student of Frederick Funston's life for thirty years

Book The Enduring Indians of Kansas

Download or read book The Enduring Indians of Kansas written by Joseph B. Herring and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 1990-07-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cherokees' "Trail of Tears" and the forced migration of other Southern tribes during the 1830s and 1840s were the most notorious consequences of Andrew Jackson's Indian removal policy. Less well known is the fact that many tribes of the Old Northwest territory were also forced to surrender their lands and move west of the Mississippi River. By 1850, upwards of 10,000 displaced Indians had been settled "permanently" along the wooded streams and rivers of eastern Kansas. Twenty years later only a few hundred--mostly Kickapoos, Potawatomis, Chippewas, Munsees, Iowas, Foxes, and Sacs--remained. Joseph Herring's The Enduring Indians of Kansas recounts the struggle of these determined survivors. For them, the "end of Indian Kansas" was unacceptable, and they stayed on the lands that they had been promised were theirs forever. Offering a good counterpoint to Craig Miner's and William Unrau's The End of Indian Kansas (see opposite page), Herring shows the reader a shifting set of native perspectives and strategies. He argues that it was by acculturation on their own terms--by walking the fine line between their traditional ways and those of the whites--that these Indians managed to survive, to retain their land, and to resist the hostile intrusions of the white world. The story of their epic struggle to survive will place a new set of names in the pantheon of American Indian heroes.
