Book Mysticism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jess Hollenback
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 1996-11-01
  • ISBN : 0271044446
  • Pages : 661 pages

Download or read book Mysticism written by Jess Hollenback and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1996-11-01 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sweeping study of mysticism by Jess Hollenback considers the writings and experiences of a broad range of traditional religious mystics, including Teresa of Avila, Black Elk, and Gopi Krishna. It also makes use of a new category of sources that more traditional scholars have almost entirely ignored, namely, the autobiographies and writings of contemporary clairvoyants, mediums, and out-of-body travelers. This study contributes to the current debate about the contextuality of mysticism by presenting evidence that not only are the mystic's interpretations of and responses to experiences culturally and historically conditioned, but historical context and cultural environment decisively shape both the perceptual and affective content of the mystic's experience as well. Hollenback also explores the linkage between the mystic's practice of recollection and the onset of other unusual or supernormal manifestations such as photisms, the ability to see auras, telepathic sensitivity, clairvoyance, and out-of-body experiences. He demonstrates that these extraordinary phenomena can actually deepen our understanding of mysticism in unexpected ways. A unique feature of this book is its in-depth analysis of &"empowerment,&" an important phenomenon ignored by most scholars of mysticism. Empowerment is a peculiar enhancement of the imagination, thoughts, and desires that frequently accompanies mystical states of consciousness. Hollenback shows its cross-cultural persistence, its role in constructing the perceptual and existential environments within which the mystic dwells, and its linkage to the fundamental contextuality of mystical experience.

Book The S khyak rik of varak a

Debates between Sāṁkhya adherents, Vedantic philosophers, and Buddhist thinkers examined fundamental concepts of existence, mind, and the nature of reality. Sāṁkhya ideas appear in many other Indian texts, including the Bhagavadgītā and Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras, as well as in Indian Buddhist thought. This workbook presents the most important text of classical Sāṁkhya, the Sāṁkhyakārikā of Īśvarakṛṣṇa, which summarizes the system in just 72 verses. The text is arranged for use by both general readers and Sanskrit students. It includes an English translation, a word-by-word analysis of the Sanskrit grammar and vocabulary, metrical analysis, and references.

As the classical treatise on the Hindu understanding of mind and consciousness and on the technique of meditation, it has exerted immense influence over the religious practices of Hinduism in India and, more recently, in the West. Edwin F. Bryant's translation is clear, direct, and exact. Each sutra is presented as Sanskrit text, transliteration, and precise English translation, and is followed by Bryant's authoritative commentary, which is grounded in the classical understanding of yoga and conveys the meaning and depth of the sutras in a user-friendly manner for a Western readership without compromising scholarly rigor or traditional authenticity. Book The Integrity of the Yoga Dar ana

Download or read book The Integrity of the Yoga Dar ana written by Ian Whicher and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-11-13 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Integrity of the Yoga Darśana centers on the thought of Patañjali, the great exponent of the authoritative and Classical Yoga school of Hinduism and the reputed author of the Yoga-Sutras. In this textual, historical, and interpretive study, Whicher offers a plausible and innovative reading of the "intention" of the Yoga-Sutras, namely that Yoga does not advocate the abandonment or condemnation of the world, but rather supports a stance that enables one to live more fully in the world without being enslaved by worldly identification. Challenging and correcting misperceptions about Yoga drawn by traditional and modern interpretations of the Yoga-Sutras, the author argues for a fresh vision of the spiritual potential present in this seminal text, thereby contributing to our understanding of the meaning and practical relevance of Yoga and its reception today.
