Download or read book Kabir and the Kabir Panth Classic Reprint written by G. H. Westcott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kabir and the Kabir Panth The following pages represent the'uresult of inquiries extending over the last ten years. The gradual way in which such information, usis given, has been acquired and the number of times that first impressions have had to give way to subsequent discoveries would be suffi cient warning that this representation of the subject is little likely to be free from errors. My hope is that this study will do something to increase the interest already felt by many in the various religious sects that have been called into existence in India through the efforts of distinguished teachers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bijak of Kabir: Translated Into English While in 1910 my Hindi d104 was passing through the Press, I was engaged in putting the same into English, and the Reverend B. H. P. Fisher very kindly helped in revising and correcting the same and a few pages also passed through the Press. But for various reasons the printing of the translation had to be abandoned. For about five years the translation remained in suspense. During this period fresh light was 1thrown upon the text of the Bijak, and it was strongly felt necessary that a fresh translation should be made. Early in 1916 I started the translation and finished it by the end of February 1916. This time I asked the Reverend E. W. Ormerod, of the Cawnpore Brotherhood, to revise and correct my translation. To this request of mine he readily responded and spent many weary hours daily with me in correcting the translation. I am indebted to him for having made the translation intelligible for English readers to which I can make no pretension. But in no way should he be held responsible if the rendering into English does not agree with the original. I trust he will permit me to avail myself of this opportunity of tendering my warmest acknowledgement of his invaluable labours. Book excerpt: Kabir was an extraordinary oral poet whose works have been sung and recited by millions throughout North India for half a millennium. He may have been illiterate and he preached an abrasive, sometimes shocking, always uncompromising message that exhorted his audience to shed their delusions, pretentions, and empty orthodoxies in favor of an intense, direct, and personal confrontation with the truth. Thousands of poems are popularly attributed to Kabir, but only a few written collections have survived over the centuries. The Bijak is one of the most important, and is the sacred book of those who follow Kabir.

Download or read book A Survey of Hinduism written by Klaus K. Klostermaier and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition of the classic text updates the information contained in the earlier editions, and includes new chapters on the origins of Hinduism; its history of relations with Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam; Hindu science; and Hindu measures of time. The chronology and the bibliography have been updated as well. A comprehensive survey of the Hindu tradition, the book deals with the history of Hinduism, the sacred writings of the Hindus, the Hindu worldview, and the specifics of the major branches of Hinduism—Vaisnavism, Saivism, and Saktism. It also focuses on the geographical ties of Hinduism with the land of India, the social order created by Hinduism, and the various systems of Hindu thought. Klaus K. Klostermaier describes the development of Hinduism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including present-day political Hinduism and the efforts to turn Hinduism into a modern world religion. A unique feature of the book is its treatment of Hinduism in a topical fashion, rather than by chronological description of the development of Hinduism or by summary of the literature. The complexities of Hindu life and thought are thus made real to the reader, and Hindus will recognize it as their own tradition.

Book Christian Identity and Dalit Religion in Hindu India 1868 1947

Download or read book Christian Identity and Dalit Religion in Hindu India 1868 1947 written by Chad M. Bauman and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10-07 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Series: Studies in the History of Christian Missions (SHCM)When a form of Christianity from one corner of the world encounters the religion and culture of another, new and distinctive forms of the faith result. In this volume Chad Bauman considers one such cultural context -- colonial Chhattisgarh in north central India. In his study Bauman focuses on the interaction of three groups: Hindus from the low-caste Satnami community, Satnami converts to Christianity, and the American missionaries who worked with them. Informed by archival snooping and ethnographic fieldwork, the book reveals the emergence of a unique Satnami-Christian identity. As Bauman shows, preexisting structures of thought, belief, behavior, and more altered this emerging identity in significant ways, thereby creating a distinct regional Christianity.
