Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following on from the success of Fractal Geometry: Mathematical Foundations and Applications, this new sequel presents a variety of techniques in current use for studying the mathematics of fractals. Much of the material presented in this book has come to the fore in recent years. This includes methods for studying dimensions and other parameters of fractal sets and measures, as well as more sophisticated techniques such as thermodynamic formalism and tangent measures. In addition to general theory, many examples and applications are described, in areas such as differential equations and harmonic analysis. This book is mathematically precise, but aims to give an intuitive feel for the subject, with underlying concepts described in a clear and accessible manner. The reader is assumed to be familiar with material from Fractal Geometry, but the main ideas and notation are reviewed in the first two chapters. Each chapter ends with brief notes on the development and current state of the subject. Exercises are included to reinforce the concepts. The author's clear style and up-to-date coverage of the subject make this book essential reading for all those who with to develop their understanding of fractal geometry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unusually thoughtful and well-constructed introduction to the serious study of mathematics, this book requires no background beyond high school courses in plane geometry and elementary algebra. From that starting point, it is designed to lead readers willing to work through its exercises and problems to the achievement of basic mathematical literacy. The text provides a fundamental orientation in modern mathematics, an essential vocabulary of mathematical terms, and some facility in the use of mathematical concepts and symbols. From there, readers will be equipped to move on to more serious work, and they'll be well on the way to having the tools essential for work in the physical sciences, engineering, and the biological and social sciences. Starting with elementary treatments of algebra, logic, and set theory, the book advances to explorations of plane analytic geometry, relations and functions, numbers, and calculus. Subsequent chapters discuss probability, statistical inference, and abstract mathematical theories. Each section is enhanced with exercises in the text and problems at the end. Answers to the exercises and some of the problems are included at the end of each section.

Book The Geometry of Innocence

Download or read book The Geometry of Innocence written by Ken Schles and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "His first book was called Invisible City and has become quite a legend. Twelve years after this initial success, the American photographer Ken Schles now presents his second book of photographs - The Geometry of Innocence. With his photographs, Schles approaches the omnipresence of social structures, which - pushed by the flood of media images - are undergoing permanent, almost frantic change. In a veritable visual roller coaster he sends his viewers onto city streets, playgrounds, into pubs and bars, puts them into a police helicopter and takes them to death row, hospital rooms and police interventions. There is no "story", only a breathless sequence of pictures condensed into thematic clusters - a highly intense visual experience soon holding the viewer spell-bound. Ken Schles is aware that the meaning of the photographic image is relative. But he did his book anyway, and with The Geometry of Innocence, he succeeded in creating a bold, highly sophisticated picture book."--Publisher.

Book The Secret Geometry of the Dollar

Download or read book The Secret Geometry of the Dollar written by Ken McGrath and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2002-12-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as research. It has been written so the average reader will be able to see the fascinating patterns of symbolic mathematics and geometry hidden in the design of the dollar bill. Much of its esoteric symbolism will be shown and analyzed from history of the long train of tradition that led up to the dollars present design. Although some of these ideas easily lead to wide ranging philosophical speculation, (and I reserve the right to drag out the soapbox occasionally). I will, none the less, try to maintain a neutral or scientific approach to these topics. Most of this story has been written in the first-person, like a letter to the reader--like a notebook. In order that the reasoning that led me to these discoveries might be more easily understood, I have tried to show my slow progress and mistakes more or less as they happened, and the gradual development of my thinking as I went along. But to all of this I will add some hindsight, and a certain amount of convenient arrangement of the order of some of the discoveries for clarity. Without this, most of my starting points of investigation and conclusions will not be understandable, and many of my earlier dubious paths can be left unsaid. Since this curious and strange design is not yet completely known or fully analyzed, this investigation is by no means finished and should be an invitation for more adventurous readers to make their own discoveries. This study is a much larger task than it would appear at first glance. This writing will provide many of the mathematical keys and clues to enable readers to start to investigate on their own, or to demonstrate to themselves the validity of those things shown here. But these are hidden symbols--both philosophical and mathematical--and as such, need to be puzzled out.

Download or read book Plateau s Problem written by Frederick J. Almgren (Jr.) and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1966 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been many wonderful developments in the theory of minimal surfaces and geometric measure theory in the past 25 to 30 years. Many of the researchers who have produced these excellent results were inspired by this little book - or by Fred Almgren himself. The book is indeed a delightful invitation to the world of variational geometry. A central topic is Plateau's Problem, which is concerned with surfaces that model the behavior of soap films. When trying to resolve the problem, however, one soon finds that smooth surfaces are insufficient: Varifolds are needed. With varifolds, one can obtain geometrically meaningful solutions without having to know in advance all their possible singularities. This new tool makes possible much exciting new analysis and many new results. Plateau's problem and varifolds live in the world of geometric measure theory, where differential geometry and measure theory combine to solve problems which have variational aspects. The author's hope in writing this book was to encourage young mathematicians to study this fascinating subject further. Judging from the success of his students, it achieves this exceedingly well.

Book Depth Crossings and Conflicts in Discrete Geometry

Download or read book Depth Crossings and Conflicts in Discrete Geometry written by Marek Sulovsk 'y and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2012 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discrete geometry has been among the fastest growing fields of mathematics in the last decades. One of the most fascinating objects studied in discrete geometry are k-sets. Not only are they extremely difficult to understand but they also play an important role in estimating the running time of several geometric algorithms. This thesis presents developments in three areas related to k-sets. First, it examines the circle containment problem of Urrutia and Neumann-Lara and reveals its relationships to geometric partitioning problems and centre regions. Next, it investigates k-sets in low dimensions and generalises the k-edge crossing identity of Andrzejak et al. to the sphere. Last, it studies conflict-free colourings of geometric hypergraphs and extends many results on this topic to more restrictive list colouring variants.

Book Computational Arithmetic Geometry

Download or read book Computational Arithmetic Geometry written by Kristin Estella Lauter and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the recent increase in available computing power, new computations are possible in many areas of arithmetic geometry. To name just a few examples, Cremona's tables of elliptic curves now go up to conductor 120,000 instead of just conductor 1,000, tables of Hilbert class fields are known for discriminant up to at least 5,000, and special values of Hilbert and Siegel modular forms can be calculated to extremely high precision. In many cases, these experimental capabilities haveled to new observations and ideas for progress in the field. They have also led to natural algorithmic questions on the feasibility and efficiency of many computations, especially for the purpose of applications in cryptography. The AMS Special Session on Computational Arithmetic Geometry, held onApril 29-30, 2006, in San Francisco, CA, gathered together many of the people currently working on the computational and algorithmic aspects of arithmetic geometry. This volume contains research articles related to talks given at the session. The majority of articles are devoted to various aspects of arithmetic geometry, mainly with a computational approach.

Book The Motion of a Surface by Its Mean Curvature MN 20

Download or read book The Motion of a Surface by Its Mean Curvature MN 20 written by Kenneth A. Brakke and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenneth Brakke studies in general dimensions a dynamic system of surfaces of no inertial mass driven by the force of surface tension and opposed by a frictional force proportional to velocity. He formulates his study in terms of varifold surfaces and uses the methods of geometric measure theory to develop a mathematical description of the motion of a surface by its mean curvature. This mathematical description encompasses, among other subtleties, those of changing geometries and instantaneous mass losses. Originally published in 1978.
