Book excerpt: The Roman emperor Nero is remembered by history as the vain and immoral monster who fiddled while Rome burned. Edward Champlin reinterprets Nero's enormities on their own terms, as the self-conscious performances of an imperial actor with a formidable grasp of Roman history and mythology and a canny sense of his audience. Nero murdered his younger brother and rival to the throne, probably at his mother's prompting. He then murdered his mother, with whom he may have slept. He killed his pregnant wife in a fit of rage, then castrated and married a young freedman because he resembled her. He mounted the public stage to act a hero driven mad or a woman giving birth, and raced a ten-horse chariot in the Olympic games. He probably instigated the burning of Rome, for which he then ordered the spectacular punishment of Christians, many of whom were burned as human torches to light up his gardens at night. Without seeking to rehabilitate the historical monster, Champlin renders Nero more vividly intelligible by illuminating the motives behind his theatrical gestures, and revealing the artist who thought of himself as a heroic figure. Nero is a brilliant reconception of a historical account that extends back to Tacitus, Suetonius, and Cassius Dio. The effortless style and artful construction of the book will engage any reader drawn to its intrinsically fascinating subject.

Book excerpt: The signing of the Gdansk Agreements in August 1980 signaled the birth of the Solidarity independent trae union movement. The sixteen months that followed until the December 1981 declaration of martial law remain one of the most fascinating chapter in the history of communist states. But the events of August 1980 did not materialize from thin air. The groundwork for Solidarity was prepared five years before when a group of dissident intellectuals gathered to boldly proclaim their solidarity with persecuted workers at Random and Ursus. This group called itself the Komitet Obrony Robotnikow (KOR) or the Worker's Defense Committee. What was KOR? What were the social and political circumstances that lead to its formation? And how did it presage a movement that would come to symbolize the hopes of a whole generation of Poles? The answers to these questions lie in the rare insights provided by one of Poland's most respected historians, Jan Jozef Lipski, who was also a found and active member of KOR. His book, translated from the Polish, is a meticulously detailed, insider's account of KOR from its formation in 1976 to its dissolution of 1981 when it was subsumed by the more powerful movement of mass, organized protest, Solidarity. The history of KOR is painted on the broad canvass of Polish society, in a manner which sheds light on the roles of other actors--workers, peasants, government officials, the Catholic Church, the Soviet Union--who also had a hand in shaping events during this period. KOR: A History of the Workers' Defense Committee in Poland is a work of first-rate importance unlike any other published in the West. It provides a deep insight into the origins of events in Poland, and will also inform those intersted in the process of liberation elsewhere in Eastern Europe. Although written with a historian's attention to detail and objectivity, it is a riveting work of sustained dramatic tension. For Lipski is a dissident who writes about Poland from Poland and the history he writes about is till in the making. Book The Making of This Side of Paradise

Download or read book The Making of This Side of Paradise written by James L. W. West, III and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To write it took three months; to conceive it—three minutes; to collect the data in it—all my life." So said F. Scott Fitzgerald regarding This Side of Paradise, the novel he began writing in November 1917 and published on March 26, 1920. This Side of Paradise launched Fitzgerald as the "Prophet of the Jazz Age" and the spokesman for his generation. It is still one of the major reasons for his fame today. The story of how Fitzgerald wrote and published the book is fascinating. In The Making of "This Side of Paradise", James West studies the inception, composition, publication, and textual history of the novel. He traces its growth from its earliest version, entitled "The Romantic Egotist," to its final published form. Based on preserved documentary evidence—fragments of "The Romantic Egotist," the manuscript of This Side of Paradise, surviving correspondence, and other papers—this volume blends the techniques of biographical, critical, and textual scholarship to tell the story of the making of the quintessential novel of the twenties.

Book Stories from the past of Optina

Download or read book Stories from the past of Optina written by Monk Lazar Afanasyev and published by Vladimir Djambov. This book was released on with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html Here Igor writes in his diary on January 3, 1989: “The Holy Vvedensk monastery, / The blessed Optina Desert, / always hoping for the mercy of the Mother of God, / on the banks of the river flowing into the eternal life, / nurtured a wonderful tree of old age / and you became like a city, to him who descended from heaven, / where God dwells from men, / taking away every tear from their eyes, / let us also rejoice, brethren, / we will praise Christ the King and our God / and we will glorify the Lady of the world, the Most Pure Virgin, / as a haven for salvation has been given to us / and instructors - the reverend fathers”. Why is there so much misunderstanding of the spiritual word in people? “It is difficult for people to penetrate into the meaning of the word,” Igor writes, “it is difficult to familiarize with the power of the word, and thus the consciousness of the truth is difficult - only by the action (power) of sin. This is a consequence of the fall, the transgression of God's commandment. Adam did not listen to the word, that is, he rejected himself from understanding the meaning, as if he was separated from him, and the instantly formed gap filled sin... The way of restoring the possibility of listening to the Word and comprehending Him and joining Him is the meaning of our labors.” … There is no final finishing, or maybe it was not necessary for him: the diary was not intended for prying eyes. But now we are reading these penitential appeals to the Lord of extraordinary spiritual beauty... “Where will I receive tears, if not from You, O God?” it says there. “Where am I going on the day of sorrow, if not to Your temple, Master? Where will I find consolation, if not in Thy words, Holy One? Do not reject me, Lord, and now remember me.” Having a divine mind, as if a God-given infant, You have abhorred the pagan delights, you wise, But having fallen in love with parental piety, Ascend by virtue as on a ladder from strength to strength, You have acquired the grace of God... Akathist to the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius, Thessalonian wonderworker (Ikos 2).

Book Encyclopedia of the Roman Empire

Download or read book Encyclopedia of the Roman Empire written by Matthew Bunson and published by Infobase Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not much has happened in the Roman Empire since 1994 that required the first edition to be updated, but Bunson, a prolific reference and history author, has revised it, incorporated new findings and thinking, and changed the dating style to C.E. (Common Era) and B.C.E. (Before Common Era). For the 500 years from Julius Caesar and the Gallic Wars in 59-51 B.C.E. to the fall of the empire in the west in 476 C.E, he discusses personalities, terms, sites, and events. There is very little cross-referencing.

Book Nero

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A striking, nuanced biography of Nero—the controversial populist ruler and last of the Caesars—and a vivid portrait of ancient Rome “Exciting and provocative . . . Nero is a pleasure to read.”—Barry Strauss, author of The War That Made the Roman Empire: Antony, Cleopatra, and Octavian at Actium The Roman emperor Nero’s name has long been a byword for cruelty, decadence, and despotism. As the stories go, he set fire to Rome and thrummed his lyre as it burned. He then cleared the charred ruins and built a vast palace. He committed incest with his mother, who had schemed and killed to place him on the throne, and later murdered her. But these stories, left behind by contemporary historians who hated him, are hardly the full picture, and in this nuanced biography, celebrated historian Anthony Everitt and investigative journalist Roddy Ashworth reveal the contradictions inherent in Nero and offer a reappraisal of his life. Contrary to popular memory, the empire was well managed during his reign. He presided over diplomatic triumphs, and his legions overcame the fiery British queen Boudica who led one of the greatest revolts Rome had ever had to face. He loved art, culture, and music, and he won the loyalty of the lower classes with fantastic spectacles. He did not set fire to Rome. In Nero, ancient Rome comes to life: the fire-prone streets, the deadly political intrigues, and the ongoing architectural projects. In this teeming, politically unstable world, Nero was vulnerable to fierce reproach from the nobility and relatives who would gladly usurp him, and he was often too ready to murder rivals. He had a vision for Rome, but, racked by insecurity, he perhaps lacked the stomach to govern it. This is the bloodstained story of one of Rome’s most notorious emperors: but in Everitt and Ashworth’s hands, Nero’s life is also a complicated, cautionary tale about the mettle required to rule.

Book The Origins of Democratization in Poland

Download or read book The Origins of Democratization in Poland written by Michael H. Bernhard and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home to the New York Yankees, the Bronx Zoo, and the Grand Concourse, the Bronx was at one time a haven for upwardly mobile second-generation immigrants eager to leave the crowded tenements of Manhattan in pursuit of the American dream. Once hailed as a "wonder borough" of beautiful homes, parks, and universities, the Bronx became -- during the 1960s and 1970s -- a national symbol of urban deterioration. Thriving neighborhoods that had long been home to generations of families dissolved under waves of arson, crime, and housing abandonment, turning blocks of apartment buildings into gutted, graffiti-covered shells and empty, trash-filled lots. In this revealing history of the Bronx, Evelyn Gonzalez describes how the once-infamous New York City borough underwent one of the most successful and inspiring community revivals in American history. From its earliest beginnings as a loose cluster of commuter villages to its current status as a densely populated home for New York's growing and increasingly more diverse African American and Hispanic populations, this book shows how the Bronx interacted with and was affected by the rest of New York City as it grew from a small colony on the tip of Manhattan into a sprawling metropolis. This is the story of the clattering of elevated subways and the cacophony of crowded neighborhoods, the heady optimism of industrial progress and the despair of economic recession, and the vibrancy of ethnic cultures and the resilience of local grassroots coalitions crucial to the borough's rejuvenation. In recounting the varied and extreme transformations this remarkable community has undergone, Evelyn Gonzalez argues that it was not racial discrimination, rampant crime, postwar liberalism, or big government that was to blame for the urban crisis that assailed the Bronx during the late 1960s. Rather, the decline was inextricably connected to the same kinds of social initiatives, economic transactions, political decisions, and simple human choices that had once been central to the development and vitality of the borough. Although the history of the Bronx is unquestionably a success story, crime, poverty, and substandard housing still afflict the community today. Yet the process of building and rebuilding carries on, and the revitalization of neighborhoods and a resurgence of economic growth continue to offer hope for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To get the resources and respect they need, nurses have long had to be advocates for themselves and their profession, not just for their patients. For a decade, From Silence to Voice has provided nurses with the tools they need to explain the breath and complexity of nursing work. Bernice Buresh and Suzanne Gordon have helped nurses around the world speak up and convey to the public that nursing is more than dedication and caring-it demands specialized knowledge, expertise across a range of medical technologies, and decision-making about life-and-death issues. "Nurses and nursing organizations," they write, "must go out and tell the public what nurses really do so that patients can actually get the benefit of their expert care." The comprehensively revised and updated third edition of From Silence to Voice will help nurses construct messages using a range of traditional and new social media that accurately describe the true nature of their work. Because nurses are busy, the communication techniques in this book are designed to integrate naturally into nurses' everyday lives and to complement nurses' work with patients and families.
