Book Red Pepper and Gorgeous George

Download or read book Red Pepper and Gorgeous George written by James C. Clark and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2011-10-09 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly a century in Florida and throughout the South, election to the United States Senate virtually guaranteed a lifetime position, especially if you were a Democrat. Certainly no Republican candidate stood a chance in the general election, and it was nearly unthinkable to imagine a serious challenger emerging in the primary. Claude "Red" Pepper first ran for the U.S. Senate in 1934. Though unsuccessful, despite allegations of voter fraud, he won a special election two years later after both senators from Florida died in office. Reelected to full terms in 1938 and 1944 as a vigorous supporter of the New Deal, he had every reason to suspect the seat was his indefinitely--or at least until he decided it was time to seek higher office. Pepper saw himself as the national heir to Roosevelt's foreign policy; he encouraged cooperation with the Soviet Union, our World War II ally, and actively worked to defeat Truman’s presidential nomination in 1948. After nearly fourteen years in office, Pepper had earned the enmity of the president, alienated most of his colleagues in the senate, and aligned himself with the ultra-left-wing politics of Henry Wallace. Still, in the entire history of the state, no sitting Florida Senator had ever been voted out of office. However, the political world was changing, and it was the right-leaning "Gorgeous" George Smathers, not Pepper, who recognized and took advantage of this fact. Smathers fought a vicious, bare-knuckled campaign, employing ferocious and divisive attacks against Pepper. He helped make "iberal" anathema to aspiring southern politics, and was the first of a new breed of conservative politicians--though not yet Republican--to rise to power. Eventually the era would be named for a junior senator from Wisconsin, but it was Smathers who first successfully employed the strategies of McCarthyism to unseat an incumbent. He was so successful, in fact, that before the general election Smathers had to reassure President Truman and other potential supporters that his loyalties did, in fact, lie with the Democractic Party. His resounding victory inspired others--including Richard Nixon and Barry Goldwater--to adopt similar tactics in their senatorial campaigns. It also helped set the stage for the complete reversal of the political power structure that had ruled the South since the end of Reconstruction. Red Pepper and Gorgeous George is a fascinating look at the campaign that changed everything in Florida--and the South. It is also a shocking, sobering reminder that, despite introducing the phrase "hanging chad" to the national lexicon, the 2000 presidential election was merely the second most important national election to take place in the state.

Download or read book To Love One s Enemies written by Jennifer Hobhouse Balme and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 711 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Hobhouse, 1860-1926, was one of the first great women of the twentieth century. She was a feminist, a pacifist and an internationalist, and above all a humanitarian. She worked tirelessly for the disadvantaged and, in the case of the South African women and children who were herded into concentration camps by Lord Kitchener, was relentless in expound¬ing their cause. This took great courage. She was deported from Cape Town, and was unable to get legal redress. Emily Hobhouse's young life was spent in a tiny village in east Cornwall where her father was Rector and it was only when he died that she was able to expand her horizons. She was 35 and untrained. She went to Minnesota, USA, to do welfare work for Cornish miners and formed an unfortunate relationship with a man who became Mayor of the town. They planned to marry and live in Mexico. Emily spent a trying time until the engagement was broken off just before the Boer War started. After the war she travelled through the ravaged areas of South Africa and devised a successful scheme of home industries for young girls on isolated farms. Illness forced her to seek refuge in Italy where she remained almost to the beginning of World War I, and began her famous corre-spondence first with J.C. Smuts and then with Isabel Steyn. Her comments on the events of the day show unusual foresight. She was loved by the people of South Africa and admired by those like Mahatma Gandhi who asked for her help. She was a bit of a painter, a writer and an entertainer, and in spite of ill-health travelled easily between countries, even in the midst of the first World War when she went to Germany, and hoped to obtain peace. Returning to Europe after that war Emily Hobhouse put into a place a number of schemes to help the impoverished, but the cry of the children of Leipzig won her particular sympathy, and with the help of the Save the Children Fund and later the South Africans she devised a feeding scheme for them. The South Africans so admired her that they clubbed together to buy her a little house in Cornwall, at St. Ives. Later Emily moved to London where she died, 8th June 1926. Her remains were cremated and the ashes buried at the foot of the memorial for the women and children who died in the Anglo Boer War for whom she had worked so hard. This book contains an outline of Emily Hobhouse's life and work including much new material; official and un-official records of the Concentration Camps set up by Lord Kitchener in the Anglo Boer War; many letters, and correspondence with J.C. Smuts and Isabel Steyn, wife of the ex-President of the Orange Free State.

Unaware that their findings represented a potential new destiny for the human race, the original four discoverers set about establishing a community, which they named Aztlan, after the mythical home of the Aztecs. As the embryonic community developed, an inevitable conflict with the oppressive Terra Security Force on Earth loomed, the eventual confrontation which inadvertently delivered an unexpected, but needed dose of diversity into the Aztlan ranks; including an eclectic group of seven women, the sisters, with the required mix of energies to fulfil the original decree of an Aztec God. Sisters of the Sixth Sun is an epic tale of adventure and relationships, culminating in an unexpected love story.

Download or read book High on Life with Horses written by Shirley Bryan and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description of my book "High On Life, With Horses" My book consists of three parts, the first, "Flame and I," begins as a Memoir following my parent's divorce when I was 12. When I was 14 years old, I was living with my aunt and uncle on a farm near Gilliam, Missouri, near the Missouri River. At this time, my paternal grandfather gave me an unbroken four year old horse he had bought for me 3 years earlier (and kept at a friend's place near Miami, Missouri) unknown to me. When presented to me, I named him Flame and we became best friends. When I was sixteen, I was forced to move to Kansas City to live with my mother and go to high school there. Everyone agreed I could come back every other week-end to ride my beloved horse. This was another turbulent time for me, but I persevered, graduated and went to work at Hallmarks in the art department. On December 27, 1956, my Marine, Dale Bryan, and I were married. I was still going to see my horse every other week-end. When Dale was discharged, we moved to the country and I finally had Flame with me. In 1965, we, with our two small sons, Flame and a pony, moved to our farm, north of Chilhowee, Missouri, and I became a farm wife. In the 1970's I met other women who rode and camped with their horses. We became the very best of friends and called ourselves The Saddle Bags. Suddenly, my memoir wasn't just about me, but all the women I was now riding with. Horsey adventures abound, some sadness, too, but we women are definitely "High On Life, With Horses." We have great escapades and so much fun. (Meanwhile, I became a professional artist.) Bees, baby bobcats, bicycles, ticks, long horns, stinging nettles, snake bite, fawns, dogs, emus, loose donkeys, and floods are only a few of the things we encountered through-out the second part of my book. Bad things happened, too; we lost one of our Saddle Bags in a horse-related accident. Not to mention, I almost wrecked my truck and new trailer with two horses inside! Another time, we were 40 miles south of Joplin, on a ride at Pineville, when the huge tornado hit Joplin. When we left early the next morning, we had to skirt around the east side of Joplin to get to US71 Highway and saw so much desolation and destruction. There were more funny incidences, though, than sad ones. For instance, "A Senile Old Woman" - "She's Ruined" - "Does Anybody Have Any Preparation H cream?" - "Nat Saying Good-bye to April." In 1999, I also began riding with The Desperate Horse Wives, who were mostly day riders. Every Thursday was set aside as our day to ride. These women hail from around the Clinton and Appleton City area. There were some real "dyed in the wool" women riders in this group, but, all in all, they weren't quite as adventurous as The Saddle Bags. I rode with The Saddle Bags, and The Desperate Horse Wives until I gave up riding at age 75. Most of this group submitted appealing stories of their first horse or pony, included in this third section. "Martha's Blue Racer" will surely make you laugh, as will " 'Step Along Now, Fella' " - "He Won't Leave the Other Horses" and "Oops! My Saddle Turned." We encountered llamas, bees, an opossum, and snakes. Horse accidents happened. Husbands accused of having "Short Rides, Long Lunches." (It's because of all the gourmet cooks we have and our lively conversations.) Nat regularly reminded us that we could be working on the chicken line at Tyson's instead of riding our horses and having so much fun together. We women cherished our time together and with our horses. So, as you can tell, if you don't like horses...this book's not for you!

Book excerpt: Horses make Dreams. Come. True.Horses live, move, and think at the speed of trust, and unlike some people, horses can't be bought. The end of the rainbow for horse-crazy ladies is transformation; becoming more than they were alone. Horses tell you things about yourself you don't already know. Horses are as true to their nature as you are, never believing things about themselves that aren't real. "I slept on that horse, and ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the toy Wonder pony. When I woke out of a dead sleep I cried, because I wasn't done riding my Wonder horse. From that moment, the breath of horse-crazy was instilled in me." - Jessica Shively Until I was thirty-three years old, I kept the dream of horses alive in my heart, doing everything possible to ride, pet, talk to, or simply be near one. This book is for my sisters in the Realm of Horses, those living the dream and those still clinging to the hope that one day hers will come true. My years as an equine entrepreneur taught me lessons I couldn't learn anywhere else because each one either blessed my heart or broke it. Horse-crazy isn't a fad. It's true love. I'm so grateful to my Sisters of the Realm, generous women who share their memories and hearts with readers. Even if youth is a memory and you aren't living your horse dream yet, don't let it fade. For some the dream takes wings as a little girl and for others it arrives with wrinkles and grandchildren. Girls and horses go together like moss on a north-facing rock. Some of my sisters in the Realm of Horses come late to the party but have just as much fun. Why do women love horses? Husband, fathers, and sons try to understand us but often give up, accepting that the woman in his life was born that way and it's better to accept than resist. If you're in the sisterhood of horsewomen, I invite you to share the dream.

Book Women Horse Sports and Liberation

Download or read book Women Horse Sports and Liberation written by Erica Munkwitz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Shortlisted for the 2022 Lord Aberdare Literary Prize* This book is the first, full-length scholarly examination of British women’s involvement in equestrianism from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries, as well as the corresponding transformations of gender, class, sport, and national identity in Britain and its Empire. It argues that women’s participation in horse sports transcended limitations of class and gender in Britain and highlights the democratic ethos that allowed anyone skilled enough to ride and hunt – from chimney-sweep to courtesan. Furthermore, women’s involvement in equestrianism reshaped ideals of race and reinforced imperial ideology at the zenith of the British Empire. Here, British women abandoned the sidesaddle – which they had been riding in for almost half a millennium – to ride astride like men, thus gaining complete equality on horseback. Yet female equestrians did not seek further emancipation in the form of political rights. This paradox – of achieving equality through sport but not through politics – shows how liberating sport was for women into the twentieth century. It brings into question what “emancipation” meant in practice to women in Britain from the eighteenth through twentieth centuries. This is fascinating reading for scholars of sports history, women's history, British history, and imperial history, as well as those interested in the broader social, gendered, and political histories of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and for all equestrian enthusiasts.

Book Vulnerability and Resilience

Download or read book Vulnerability and Resilience written by Jione Havea and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Vulnerability and Resilience, vulnerability is not the final word. Rather, resilience provides the cutting edge and living breath in the stories of subjects who are vulnerable. And they have many stories: stories of being trapped in bodies, teachings, and/or situations that make them (and others like them) vulnerable to discrimination, hatred, and rejection; stories of being trapped because of their bodies, theologies, and/or cultures; and stories of being trapped for no-good reason. For subjects who are vulnerable, life is like a maze of traps, and stories of resilience keep them going. The contributors to Vulnerability and Resilience refuse to be trapped. At the intersection of body and liberation theologies, they tell their stories in the hope that they will expose cultures that make individuals and communities vulnerable, and that those stories will encourage vulnerable subjects to be resilient and bring change to theological institutions that conserve vulnerability. Because of the location of the contributors—the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe, Caribbean, and Oceania—this book is a testimony that vulnerability is present all over the world, and that resilience is a liberating alternative.
