Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a murder-prone mistress to a killing farm that inspired a Clint Eastwood movie, rural Southern California has secrets that belie its bucolic setting. The Wineville Chicken Coop Murders—a horrible 1928 national news story that inspired the 2008 movie The Changeling from director Clint Eastwood—are only the most infamous despicable deeds that have bloodstained the rural countryside between Riverside City and the San Bernardino County line. Jurupa Valley has been a region of dark doings and scandalous misdeeds for generations. The city of Jurupa Valley was formed in 2011 from the area’s smaller communities, including Wineville (renamed Mira Loma to escape the shame), Pedley and Rubidoux. Buried in its landscape are salacious sagas of unchecked bootlegging, payday orgies and gruesome murders. Author Kim Jarrell Johnson digs deep to disinter the unsavory stories that have traditionally marked her home city as a resting place of enduring infamy. Includes photos!

Book excerpt: The far northwestern corner of Riverside County, between the San Bernardino County line and the Santa Ana River, contains a collage of unincorporated small communities with a medley of names: Pedley, Mira Loma, Indian Hills, Glen Avon, Sunnyslope, Jurupa Hills, Belltown, Rubidoux, Eastvale, and Crestmore. North of the occasionally bone-dry riparian course that gave the County and City of Riverside their names, these crossroads and "burgs" together are referred to as Jurupa. Originally part of the vast Mexican land grant known as "Rancho Jurupa," the area evolved from the days of the caballeros to a place with a population now approaching 100,000. Its history includes ranching, farming, mining, catastrophic floods, and booming subdivisions. In this volume, more than 200 vintage photographs depict Jurupa in the only published collection of historic images devoted to this area.

Book excerpt: The story of the town of Rubidoux has always been intertwined with the whims of the Santa Ana River. Through devastating droughts and the ravages of repeated floods, the community that began as the Robidoux Rancho (the original spelling of an early pioneers name) evolved into a small village with a downtown centered along Mission Boulevard, the main route between Los Angeles, Riverside, and points beyond. Soon there were motels for travelers, businesses that catered to residents, and Riverside Countys first drive-in theater. On its way to becoming the countys most urbanized unincorporated community, the townoriginally called West Riversidechanged its name to Rubidoux in the 1950s to honor the pioneer family. This volume showcases photographs of Rubidoux, as well as of neighboring Belltown and Crestmore, in the first published collection of historic images devoted solely to these communities.

Book Robidoux Chronicles

Download or read book Robidoux Chronicles written by Hugh M. Lewis and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004-10-25 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robidoux Chronicles treats with comprehensive documentary detail the factual history of the Robidoux lineage in North America from the first progenitor who arrived in Quebec in about 1665, through the famous six brothers who distinguished themselves as Mountain Men, up until even recent times on reservations in the US. Many members of the Robidoux family were intimately connected to the entire history of the North American fur trade. The six brothers, born in St. Louis before the coming of Lewis & Clark, were important fur-traders during the classical Rendezvous era of the North American fur trade. They became key players in the organization & articulation of the Overland Trail, only to die soon afterward in relative obscurity upon the plains of Kansas & Nebraska. By the 1950's, the story of the Robidoux had been almost entirely forgotten. Subsequent historians had lost all but a scant & fragmentary knowledge of the true role & exploits of the Robidoux & their French-Indian compatriots upon the frontiers of the old west. Antoine Robidoux was the first to establish permanent trading settlements west of the Rockies in the Inter-Montane corridor, & his brother Michel was one of the first expeditions to traverse the length of the Grand Canyon. The eldest brother Joseph became one of the earliest established traders on the upper Missouri & founded St. Joseph, Missouri, which was later to be the primary starting point of the Overland Trail. His younger brother Louis became one of the earliest ranch owners in California, becoming Don of the Jurupa, that encompassed the areas known today as Riverside, San Bernardino, San Jacinto & San Timoteo. An entire inter-tribal French-Indian ethnocultural orientation had developed upon the plains, prairies & mountains of the Trans-Mississippi west a good fifty years before the coming of the Iron Horse & the Pony Express, & has been carried on today in proximity to the reservations of Kansas & Oklahoma, South Dakota & Wyoming.
