Book Juke Box Karma

Download or read book Juke Box Karma written by James Vollmar and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Juke Box Karma: One writer's search for something real is ‘a search for meaning by a writer coming of age at a time when this elusive prize seemed the object most worthy of pursuit...’ Follow poet, playwright and screenwriter James Vollmar as he shares his journey from the small Northamptonshire town of his childhood through the black-and-white world of radio request shows, early TV and seaside holidays in 1960’s Cromer, with its magical juke box, to the colour, chaos and cultural ferment of 1970’s London and beyond. In the wake of the deaths of both his parents, and drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, the Beatles, William Blake and Ken Dodd, Vollmar explores a philosophical landscape of religion, politics, rationalism and alternative culture in search of ‘something real’. Blending personal memoir and cultural commentary with philosophical enquiry, Juke Box Karma: One writer's search for something real is a journey in every sense of the word and will appeal to all interested in the culture of the 1960s and 1970s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Indian film music book is a collection of eighty essays about the people who made remarkable music in Bollywood cinema, especially during the great era, and the ideas such people brought to the recording studios. When songs had to go without rhythms or when melodies had plenty of Q n A in them. In this music book, we flirt with Rock n Roll and scan songs that speed up at the end, we peep behind the screen to see what the idea was behind chorus songs in our films – even if there was no one to sing that chorus on the screen; it’s a huge list. These pages are a reflection of the time when everyone was fired up in their art, and when no one wanted to finish last in the race. It is about artists who every now and then dreamt ideas, and only after crystallizing things perfectly in their mind’s eye, went out to translate and transform their dreams into unforgettable melodies in Indian movies. Jukebox will interest the layman as well as the academician.

Book excerpt: Peacetime: Selected Poems offers a long-overdue opportunity to enjoy the work of a distinctive voice from the poetry renaissance of the late 1960s and early 1970s. James Vollmar’s poetry has been published widely in literary magazines, anthologies and booklets in the UK and the USA and appears here in collected format for the first time. Although now best known as a playwright and screenwriter, James Vollmar’s first love was always poetry. This working table I am writing on, a piece of wood, is so firm, so rigid, so static that it is hard to believe that literally trillions of electrons in it are moving almost at the speed of light. Its rigidity is an illusion, like a magic. This universe is a Magic Kingdom in the Disney World!

Book The Oxford Handbook of the British Musical

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the British Musical written by Robert Gordon and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the British Musical provides a comprehensive academic survey of British musical theatre offering both a historical account of the musical's development from 1728 and a range of in-depth critical analyses of the unique forms and features of British musicals, which explore the aesthetic values and sociocultural meanings of a tradition that initially gave rise to the American musical and later challenged its modern pre-eminence. After a consideration of how John Gay's The Beggar's Opera (1728) created a prototype for eighteenth-century ballad opera, the book focuses on the use of song in early nineteenth century theatre, followed by a sociocultural analysis of the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan; it then examines Edwardian and interwar musical comedies and revues as well as the impact of Rodgers and Hammerstein on the West End, before analysing the new forms of the postwar British musical from The Boy Friend (1953) to Oliver! (1960). One section of the book examines the contributions of key twentieth century figures including Noel Coward, Ivor Novello, Tim Rice, Andrew Lloyd Webber, director Joan Littlewood and producer Cameron Macintosh, while a number of essays discuss both mainstream and alternative musicals of the 1960s and 1970s and the influence of the pop industry on the creation of concept recordings such as Jesus Christ Superstar (1970) and Les Misérables (1980). There is a consideration of "jukebox" musicals such as Mamma Mia! (1999), while essays on overtly political shows such as Billy Elliot (2005) are complemented by those on experimental musicals like Jerry Springer: the Opera (2003) and London Road (2011) and on the burgeoning of Black and Asian British musicals in both the West End and subsidized venues. The Oxford Handbook of the British Musical demonstrates not only the unique qualities of British musical theatre but also the vitality and variety of British musicals today.
