Book Josep Maria Jujol

Download or read book Josep Maria Jujol written by Dennis Dollens and published by Lumen Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Josep Maria Jujol (1879-1949) created some of Spain's greatest modern buildings in a style known as modernisme (the Barcelona equivalent of art nouveau). In one decade, between 1913 and 1923, the young architect built five works that entitle him to be classified as a pioneer of Modernism; yet Jujol, a collaborator with Antoni Gaudi on some of that master's most admired works, has been largely unrecognized and his independent architecture unknown. Josep Maria Jujol: Five Major Buildings places the architect's work in the highly charged religious and political context of Barcelona - from the late 19th century through the Spanish Civil War and on to the time of Jujol's death in 1949. This book considers Jujol's career as parallel to, but not part of, the nascent avant-garde emerging from Barcelona's cafe Els Quatre Gats and the Galleries Dalmau, with which Picasso, Duchamp, Dali, Sert, and Miro were at one time associated. Josep Maria Jujol: Five Major Buildings traces the architect's development in this and Gaudi's conservative religious environment, as well as in a broader European frame. It also considers Jujol's use of symbolic, abstract calligraphy, collage, and painting as advanced semiotic elements in an extraordinary amalgamation of craft, material, technique and space fused into visionary architecture.

Book Grafting Architecture

Book excerpt: The project represents a determination to recognize, appreciate and reformulate the specificity of local Catalan architecture in contrast with the global and franchised architecture that has been dominant in recent years. The starting point is Bofarull House (1913-1933), one of the key works of Josep Maria Jujol. In this Tarragonan architect's way of working we can identify an attitude that can be traced through many projects built in the last century and which is based on an intensive dialogue with pre-existing features (physical or otherwise) that enable a project including and blending new and existing elements to be developed, just as cuttings are grafted to a tree.

Book Future Details of Architecture

Download or read book Future Details of Architecture written by Mark Garcia and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the exaggerated news of the untimely 'death of the detail'by Greg Lynn, the architectural detail is now more lifelike andactive than ever before. In this era of digital design andproduction technologies, new materials, parametrics, buildinginformation modeling (BIM), augmented realities and thenano-bio-information-computation consilience, the detail is now anincreasingly vital force in architecture. Though such digitallydesigned and produced details are diminishing in size to themolecular and nano levels, they are increasingly becoming morecomplex, multi-functional, high performance and self-replicating.Far from being a non-essential and final finish, this new type ofhighly evolved high-tech detail is rapidly becoming theindispensable and critical core, the (sometimes iconic) DNA of aninnovative new species of built environmental form that is spawningin scale and prominence, across product, interior, urban andlandscape design. This issue of AD re-examines the history, theories and design of the world’s most significant spatialdetails, and explores their innovative potentials and possibilitiesfor the future of architecture. Contributors include: Rachel Armstrong, Nic Clear, EdwardFord, Dennis Shelden, Skylar Tibbits. Featured architects: Ben van Berkel, Hernan Diaz Alonso,Peter Macapia, Carlo Ratti, Philippe Rahm, Patrik Schumacher, NeilSpiller.
