Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judaism, Christianity and the Modern Social Ideals Within the last quarter of a century a large number of books has been written dealing with the life of Jesus, his ethics and their relation to our social ideals. Here in America, works of which the "Social Teachings of Jesus," and "Christianity and the Changing Order," by Prof. Shailer Mathews; "Christianity and the Social Crisis," by Prof. Rauschenbusch, and "Jesus Christ and the Moral Question," by Prof. Peabody, are the best types, have rightly shifted the emphasis of Christianity from the dogmatic to the social and ethical side. In his "Social Teachings," Prof. Mathews has sounded the proper note, for in these days, religion must be socialized to be vital. But from a perusal of this literature, one is made to feel that Christianity alone is to be credited with the best of our social ideals. One cannot find fault with Christian scholars for their magnificent allegiance to what they believe to be the ideals of their Master. But one looks in vain for an adequate evaluation of the tremendous influence of Judaism upon both the ancient and the modern life. Surely the Jewishness of Jesus himself played some part in the growth and development of our present day social ideals! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Augustine and the Jews, Fredriksen draws us into the life, times, and thought of Augustine of Hippo (396–430). Focusing on the period of astounding creativity that led to his new understanding of Paul and to his great classic, The Confessions, she shows how Augustine’s struggle to read the Bible led him to a new theological vision, one that countered the anti-Judaism not only of his Manichaean opponents but also of his own church. The Christian Empire, Augustine held, was right to ban paganism and to coerce heretics. But the source of ancient Jewish scripture and current Jewish practice, he argued, was the very same as that of the New Testament and of the church—namely, God himself. Accordingly, he urged, Jews were to be left alone. Conceived as a vividly original way to defend Christian ideas about Jesus and about the Old Testament, Augustine’s theological innovation survived the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, and it ultimately served to protect Jewish lives against the brutality of medieval crusades. Augustine and the Jews sheds new light on the origins of Christian anti-Semitism and, through Augustine, opens a path toward better understanding between two of the world’s great religions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judaism and Christianity, the Differences We have no objection, however, to Professor Friedrich's definition of judeo-christian as an acknowledgment of Christianity's debt to Judaism and of the profound influ ence of the Hebrew Bible on the New Testament. We, and there is ample reason to assume that the vast ma jority of Christians will second this objection, oppose, however, the use of judeo-christian in the sense Pro fessor Morgenstern employs it, namely to express that the two religions are truly, basically one. For, in point of fact, Judaism and Christianity are lt basically one but are, as Professor Friedrich so aptly states, fundamentally opposed to each other. Professor Herford was therefore right in prognosticating that Judaism and Christianity can never blend without the surrender by the one or the other of its fundamental principles. In view of such authoritative Christian statements, it seems strange that Dr. Morgenstern blithely asserts that we may truthfully call judeo-christianity the religion of tomorrow's better world (judaism's Contribution to post-war Religion, p. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judaism Christianity: Their Original Identity and Subsequent Divergence From Each Other; A Lecture Delivered Before the Melbourne Jewish Literary Society God would neither forsake nor destroy His people. Many a time when they were on the brink of national collapse a deliverer had been sent to them. Dry bones had been vivified. 'abject slaves had been restored to the highest form of freedom. Why should that not happen now when the people were low enough in every respect? For such a purpose the ancient prophets had foretold the advent of a deliverer, or Messiah, and the belief in such a one had lived amongst the people for centuries past. Was not the time most opportune for the Messiah to appear? True, the ideas as to the nature and office of the Messiah were not at all times the same, but often differed widely. Even at that time each class or sect had its own conception of the Messiah, expecting that his chief object would be to vindicate its own views or realise its own aspirations. Yet for all that there was a silent longing for a Messiah in all minds which grew stronger from day to day in proportion to outward oppression and inward strife. He knows the feelings and opinions of modern Jews, both of the orthodox and reform divisions. And yet this enlightened, unprejudiced, and well-informed man is an earnest evangelical Christian, convinced of the superiority and truth of his own creed, and while quite fair to the other side, an uncompromising exponent of what he believes to be its weakness and deficiencies. Book Judaism and Christianity

Download or read book Judaism and Christianity written by Alan Avery-Peck and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-11-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume treats the interrelationship between Judaism and Christianity from the first centuries and into modern times, paying particular attention to these faiths’ social, cultural, and theological interactions. The issues covered range from the formation of Jewish and Christian ideology in the context of Roman paganism to the ways in which Christian culture and theology of the medieval and modern periods form a backdrop to the creation of Jewish identity. While the historical periods and issues discussed are diverse, the result is to suggest the importance of our recognizing the close development of Judaism and Christianity. Written by top scholars in Judaic and Christian studies, these essays reflect on how the two faiths related to and were shaped by each other as they evolved in shared historical and cultural contexts, even as each maintained its own distinctive ideologies and beliefs.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism of Christ: Or Attitude of Early Christians, Toward Modern Problems Such being the desires of the people, Christ, when He first declared His views, and His cause when launched on the public, were interpreted in this interest, and expected to further these ends; so that to the common people in their misery Christ appeared as a Savior, to the ideal/ Republicans as a Deliverer, and to the mon archical Jews as a King; and to them all His new community, or republic, or kingdom seemed like a guaranty of their political ideals. I propose, in this essay, to present the social and political aspects of Christ's teachings and of early Christianity, as drawn from the Gospels and from contemporaneous sources. Download or read book Messianic Expectations and Modern Judaism Classic Reprint written by Solomon Schindler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Messianic Expectations and Modern Judaism What epoch would you choose to have lived in a lady once asked the late Chauncey Wright. The most modern, was his reply. Amen, say I, unless I could come to life again in a hundred or a thousand years. For the present most certainly is the most cheering and inspiring age of the world's history so far. The world is not old, worn out, and hastening to decay. Politically, industrially, and religiously, we are seeing the first rays of the dawn of humanity's long day. The real Golden Age is ahead of us, not in the past. The twilight has been very long; and, while the mists and shadows have hung over the earth, people have easily imagined faces of hate and terror looking down on them out of the sky, and have found it hard to recognize friends in the uncertain movements of those about them. But now that the sun is up, the sky is seen to smile, and the supposed enemies of the darkness are found to be friends. One of the most striking indications of this religious advance is the coming together at lastof the Christian and the Jew. According to the narrow orthodox interpretation Of these words this coming together may seem to be brought about by the Christian's ceasing to be a Christian, and the Jew's ceasing to be a Jew. But if so, it is only because those terms have been so interpreted as to be too small for the growing religious life of man. If either Chris tian or Jew is so defined as to make it less than man, then it is time for both of them to be outgrown. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war.
