A few more words about Virchow, the practical physician. In the face of the German nihilism he preached therapy, both physical and medical. Nihilism he explained by the predominance of both exaggerated faith and of scepticism. There is, he says, a time for everything. Priest medicine was normal for a people in its infancy. Basilius the Great and Benedict of Nursia and the priestly order of Johannes have established hospitals and charities and developed medicine, but these are historical facts which do not justify for all times a depend ency of medicine on the church. Our era is no longer Asclepiadic, nor levitic, nor monkish, nor nunnish. Our medicine is of lay char acter and will always be so. It is of empiric nature and is nursed by practitioners and clinicians, and will - here is the great prophecy pronounced forty-four years ago - rise into the dignity of a science beyond what it is at this time through its combination with patho logic physiology. Generous ly sponsored by Travenol, Munich, the Dialyse-Arzte meetings now have a tradition spanning 16 years. According to the con stitution of these meetings, the topics of earlier years had to cover dialysis and related fields. Thus the sponsor requested that this year also one lecture - incorporated here as part - should deal with the state of art of dialysis, thereby hopefully linking this Workshop to the previous meetings. Dialysis techniques of the 1960s, pioneered by many of attend ing speakers and panelists (see List of Contributors), have never come to a standstill. Indeed, vascular access and extra corporeal circulation have become routine for the nephrologist and have made possible the introductimn of new approaches, such as hemofiltration and hemoperfusion. Also today new membrane technologies provide us with a potentially even more effective therapeutic tool, namely plasma separation.
