Book Dry zone of Sri Lanka Climate smart intensification of upland and lowland crop production systems

Download or read book Dry zone of Sri Lanka Climate smart intensification of upland and lowland crop production systems written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-02-18 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide explores the climate-smart intensification of upland and lowland crop production systems in the dry-zone of Sri Lanka and provides technical guidance to achieve the productive objectives of selected strategic crops (as deemed relevant by the Government of Sri Lanka). The first edition focuses on maize and groundnut upland production systems and on rice lowland production. It provides a quick reference for information on crop production and soil management, including crop varieties, nutritional requirements and field equipment. As climate change will result in wider and more severe occurrences of plant pests, the guide relies on integrated pest management practices adapted to climate change. Optimizing the production of these crops calls for the diversification of crop systems using intercrops and cover crops. Additionally, sustainable mechanization is regarded as an essential agricultural production input to optimize labour and land productivity for the sustainable and profitable development of the agriculture sector. Therefore, the guide describes the innovative equipment needed for the sustainable optimization of crop production. To ensure coherent guidance and advice on sustainable farming practices, inputs and technologies, the guide has been developed in cooperation with all stakeholders working in the agriculture sector of Sri Lanka.

Book Mycotoxins in Foodstuffs

Download or read book Mycotoxins in Foodstuffs written by Martin Weidenbörner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-24 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycotoxin contamination of food occurs as a result of crop invasion by field fungi such as Fusarium spp., Alternaria spp., Aspergillus spp., and Penicillium spp., which start their growth while in storage (storage fungi). In the worst case, these fungi produce secondary metabolites called mycotoxins. They can be very harmful to humans and animals when for example they are consumed through food. Mycotoxins have various negative effects on several organs in humans and animals. The present book gives a basic overview of the main mycotoxins in food. It lists the predisposition of a foodstuff for mycotoxin contamination, the degree of contamination, concentration, and country of detection/origin for each case of mycotoxin contamination of food. Major updates to this second edition include: - More than 750 new publications concerning mycotoxins in foodstuffs (1665 literatures at all). - A single chapter overview of mycotoxin(s) in the corresponding foodstuff. - The co-occurrence of mycotoxins in a foodstuff has been listed where possible. - Numerical and alphabetical literature. - Organic and conventional foods of a publication have been listed separately where possible. - Numerous entries described in much greater detail. - Each analyzed foodstuff has a separate entry per year where possible.

Interest is growing however in the theoretical and practical aspects of the biosynthetic mechanisms of active components in spices as well as the relationship between the biological activity and chemical structure of these secondary metabolites. A wide variety of phenolic substances and amides derived from spices have been found to possess potent chemopreventive, anti-mutagenic, anti-oxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties. Representing the first discussion of the chemical properties of a wide cross section of important spices, this book covers extensively the three broad categories of plant-derived natural products: the terpenoids, the alkaloids and the phenyl propanoids and allied phenolic compounds. Spice crops such as black pepper, ginger, turmeric and coriander are covered with information on botany, composition, uses, chemistry, international specifications and the properties of a broad range of common and uncommon spices.

Book Uses and Abuses of Plant Derived Smoke

Download or read book Uses and Abuses of Plant Derived Smoke written by Marcello Pennacchio and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants provide the food, shelter, medicines, and biomass that underlie sustainable life. One of the earliest and often overlooked uses of plants is the production of smoke, dating to the time of early hominid species. Plant-derived smoke has had an enormous socio-economic impact throughout human history, being burned for medicinal and recreational purposes, magico-religious ceremonies, pest control, food preservation, and flavoring, perfumes, and incense. This illustrated global compendium documents and describes approximately 2,000 global uses for over 1,400 plant species. The Uses and Abuses of Plant-Derived Smoke is accessibly written and provides a wealth of information on human uses for smoke. Divided into nine main categories of use, the compendium lists plant-derived smoke's medicinal, historical, ceremonial, ritual and recreational uses. Plant use in the production of incense and to preserve and flavor foods and beverages is also included. Each entry includes full binomial names and family, an identification of the person who named the plant, as well as numerous references to other scholarly texts. Of particular interest will be plants such as Tobacco (Nicotiana tabaccum), Boswellia spp (frankincense), and Datura stramonium (smoked as a treatment for asthma all over the world), all of which are described in great detail.
