Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Anthropological Institute of New-York, 1872, Vol. 1 This will certify that the undersigned, being all of full age, and citizens of the United States, desire to associate themselves together and form a society, to be known in law by the name of The Anthropological Institute of New-York. The particular objects of this society are the study of man in all his varieties, and under all his aspects and relations. Its special object will be the study of the history, conditions, and relations of the aboriginal inhabitants of America, and the phenomena resulting from the contact of the various races and families of men on the American Continent before and since the Discovery. The physical characteristics, religious conceptions, and systems of men, their mythology and traditions, their social, civil, and political organizations and institutions, their languages, literature, arts, and monuments, their modes of life and their customs are specifically within the objects of the Institute. It will further be the aim of this association to collect all manuscripts, books, and relics illustrating the several subjects above enumerated, to stimulate and encourage inquiry and research, particularly in unexplored American fields; and, by means of such publications as may be deemed proper, to utilize and disseminate the results of its investigations and efforts for the benefit of science and of man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Anthropological Institute of New-York, 1872, Vol. 1 In favor of its continuance is the fact Of a certain prestige attaching to it as one of the oldest societies Of the kind in the world; one which has numbered among; its promoters and members some Of the ablest and most earnest students of our own and other countries, and which, in the earlier years of its existence, made valuable contributions to ethnography gene rally, and to American ethnography in particular. The Society was organized mainly under the auspices of the late Hon. Albert gallatin, a man of great research, vigor, and keen ness of intellect, who brought around him such men as Dr. Edward Robinson, John L. Stephens, John R. Bartlett, Theo dore Dwight, Dr. Francis, George Folsom, Professor W. W. Turner, Dr. Hawks, and others, all and each of distinction in their respective departments of inquiry. Mr. Gallatin's house was the true seat of the society, and Mr. Gallatin him self its controlling spirit. His name gave it character, and from his purse mainly was defrayed the cost of the two volumes of Transactions which constitute about the only claim the Society possesses on the respect of the scientific world, and about its only title to be considered a learned society. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, 1872, Vol. 1 Our own system of relationships naturally follows from the marriage of single pairs; and it is, in its general nomenclature, so mere a description of the actual facts, that most persons tacitly regard it as necessarily general to the human race, with, of course, verbal and unimportant differences in detail. Hence but little information can be extracted from dictionaries and vocabularies. They generally, for instance, give words for uncle, aunt, and cousin; but an uncle may be either a father's brother or a mother's brother, and an aunt may be either a father's sister or a mother's sister; a first cousin, again, may be the child of any one of these four uncles, and aunts but practically, as we shall see, these cases are in many races distinguished from one another and I may add, in passing, it is by no means clear that we are right in regarding them as identical and equivalent. Travellers have, on various occasions, noticed with surprise some special peculiarity of nomenclature which came under their notice; but Mr. Morgan was the first to perceive the importance of the subject, and to collect complete schedules of relationships. The special points which have been observed have, indeed, been generally regarded as mere eccentricities, but this is evidently not the case, because the principle or principles to which they are due are consistently carried out, and the nomenclature is reciprocal generally, though not quite without exceptions. Thus, if the Mohawks call a father's brother, not an uncle, but a father, they not only call his son a brother and his grandson a son, but these descendants also use the correlative terms. We must remember that our ideas of relationships are founded on our social system, and that, as other races have very dif ferent habits and ideas on this subject, it is natural to expect that their systems of relationship would also differ from ours. I have elsewhere pointed out, that the ideas and customs with reference to marriage are very dissimilar in different races, and we may say, as a general rule, that, as we descend in the scale of civilisation, the family diminishes, and the tribe increases, in importance. Words have a profound influence over thought, and true family-names prevail principally among the highest races of men. Even in the less advanced portions of our own country, we know that collective names were those of the tribe, rather than the family. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, 1872 In offering the present paper to the Anthropological Institute, I must apologise for its incompleteness. I have attempted to throw some light on the tribal history and relations of the people who live in the Nile Valley north of Khartum. The subject is one of great difficulty and obscurity from the almost entire absence of written records, and from the extraordinary way in which the races have in many cases been mixed up. It is curious, for instance, to see how completely the indigenous population has, in certain cases, lost its nationality whilst absorbing its Arab conquerors; and how Hamitic, Semitic, and Nuba tribes alike claim descent from the Koreish of Mecca. My own observation was limited; I only came into personal contact with a few of the tribes; but I had to make enquiries about the others for the purposes of the Nile Expedition. These enquiries were naturally as to the political relations of the tribes, and this must account for the absence of scientific details in my paper. Active service is not favourable to scientific observation as regards ethnological questions; the disturbance of the population is too great, and the people are too excited, too frightened, and too interested to be natural. The only way to gain the confidence of natives is to live amongst them until they become accustomed to your ways, and cease to be frightened or shy. If natives once see that you know their habits, and understand and like them, you can get almost anything you like out of them. This is, perhaps, especially the case with Arabs, who are naturally great gossips, but who are at the same time extremely suspicious and believe that some ulterior motive must underlie any leading or abrupt question. As far as my observation went there is little to add to the account which Burckhardt gave of the Nuba, though the country, owing to Egyptian misgovernment, has greatly changed for the worse since his visit. The tribes of the Nile Valley north of Khartum may conveniently be divided into three groups; the Hamitic, the Semitic, and the Nuba. I propose, however, in the first place to say a few words on the Arab tribes north of Assúan, for they form as it were a group apart.
