This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anonymous author of this worm's-eye view of the Napoleonic wars certainly got his king's shilling's worth of the action - being present at many of the great victories, as well as several of the great disasters, of the conflict. After enlisting he sailed to the River Plate on Whitelock's unsuccessful expedition against the Spanish colonies of Uruguay and Argentina, before having his first taste of the Peninsular War, and taking part in the retreat to Corunna. His next unfortunate experience was the equally disastrous Walcheren Expedition of 1809, in which he falls ill with a fever that carried off thousands of his comrades - but recovers. After that, things start to look up. The author returns to Iberia and takes part in Wellington's victories at Fuentes d'Onoro; Albuera and Vittoria. Crossing the Pyrenees into France, he is present at the battles of Bayonne and Toulouse. His military career climaxes with the battle of Waterloo and the occupation of Paris, after which he obtains his discharge.

Book A Soldier of the Seventy First

Download or read book A Soldier of the Seventy First written by Joseph Sinclair and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2010-08-19 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors sharp eye for the illuminating detail and the oddities of human behavior enabled him to present a picture of army life as graphic and revealing as any drawn by a private soldier during the Napoleonic Wars - Christopher HibbertThis remarkable memoir was first published in Edinburgh in 1819 and has withstood the test of time. One cannot improve on Sir Charles Omans description of the book as: the work of a man of superior education, who had enlisted in a moment of pique and humiliation to avoid facing at home the consequences of his own conceit and folly. The author wrote from the ranks, yet was so different in education and mental equipment from his comrades that he does not take their vices and habits for granted. The reader receives the narrative of an intelligent observer, describing the behavior of his regiment as it traveled the globe. His account covers Whitelocks disastrous South American adventure in 1806, the Peninsular War, the Walcheren Expedition and the Battle of Waterloo. For the first time, Joseph Sinclair has been unmasked as the author of the memoir, thanks to new research work by Stuart Reid.

Book The British Soldier and his Libraries c 1822 1901

Download or read book The British Soldier and his Libraries c 1822 1901 written by Sharon Murphy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Soldier and his Libraries, c. 1822-1901 considers the history of the libraries that the East India Company and Regular Army respectively established for soldiers during the nineteenth century. Drawing upon a wide range of material, including archival sources, official reports, and soldiers’ memoirs and letters, this book explores the motivations of those who were responsible for the setting up and/or operation of the libraries, and examines what they reveal about attitudes to military readers in particular and, more broadly, to working-class readers – and leisure – at this period. Murphy’s study also considers the contents of the libraries, identifying what kinds of works were provided for soldiers and where and how they read them. In so doing, The British Soldier and his Libraries, c. 1822-1901 affords another way of thinking about some of the key debates that mark book history today, and illuminates areas of interest to the general reader as well as to literary critics and military and cultural historians.
