Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Wellborn Root: A Study of His Life and Work We have sympathized with sorrow, - you and I and all of us. But which of us has the rarer gift of sympathy with joy? And so who will listen while I try to tell the story of a joyous life? It may be that I cannot tell it. My heart fails here at the outset of the journey, when I remember the swift grace of this man's walk through life, and resolve to stumble on where he trod with lightness. The flowers whose seeds he scattered lavishly by the wayside may wither in my hands, and my garland prove but a poor tribute. And though I could pluck and wreathe them at sunrise, and give them to immortality with the morning dews still fresh upon them, yet even then must I acknowledge that these were but the bounty of a rich nature, and that the best was never given to the world. For certain men of genius live more for life than for art, and often fate indulges this secret preference of the soul by the tribute of scant opportunity and early death. Of such men, when they are gone, it is almost futile to speak the truth. The essence of their lives is as subtle as perfume; it passes like the song of a bird. Perhaps it would be better that none should attempt to preserve it that we should intrust it to the magnanimity of Nature, as we intrust the mysteries of color and sound, sure that, though light yield to darkness and music to silence, the glory of them will wake again and endure through innumerable changes forever. Book excerpt: Chicago's first skyscrapers are famous for projecting the city's modernity around the world. But what did they mean at home, to the Chicagoans who designed and built them, worked inside their walls, and gazed up at their façades? Answering this multifaceted question, Chicago 1890 reveals that early skyscrapers offered hotly debated solutions to the city's toughest problems and, in the process, fostered an urban culture that spread across the country. An ambitious reinterpretation of the works of Louis Sullivan, Daniel Burnham, and John Wellborn Root, this volume uses their towering achievements as a lens through which to view late nineteenth-century urban history. Joanna Merwood-Salisbury sheds new light on many of Chicago's defining events--including violent building trade strikes, the Haymarket bombing, the World's Columbian Exposition, and Burnham's Plan of Chicago--by situating the Masonic Temple, the Monadnock Building, and the Reliance Building at the center of the city's cultural and political crosscurrents. While architects and property owners saw these pioneering structures as manifestations of a robust American identity, immigrant laborers and social reformers viewed them as symbols of capitalism's inequity. Illuminated by rich material from the period's popular press and professional journals, Merwood-Salisbury's chronicle of this contentious history reveals that the skyscraper's vaunted status was never as inevitable as today's skylines suggest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The author argues that Chicago--a city of rapid growth and severe labor unrest as well as a gateway to the West--offers the clearest lens for analyzing the history of the intellectual divide between countryside and city in the United States at the end of the nineteenth century. She shows that Chicago served as a kind of urban laboratory where numerous public intellectuals experimented with various strains of environmental thinking"--
