Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Princess of Mars is an Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction novel, the first of his famous Barsoom series. It is also Burroughs' first novel, predating his Tarzan stories. He wrote it between July and September 28, 1911, going through four working titles; initially, he was going to call it My First Adventure on Mars, then The Green Martians, Dejah Thoris, Martian Princess, and finally Under the Moons of Mars. The finished story was first published under the last of these titles in All-Story as a six-part serial in the issues for February-July 1912. For the serial publication, the author's name was given as "Norman Bean"; Burroughs had chosen the pseudonym of "Normal Bean" as a type of pun stressing that he was in his right mind, being concerned he might suffer ridicule for writing such a fantastic story. The effect was spoiled when a typesetter changed "Normal" to "Norman" on the assumption that the former was a typographical error. The story was later published as a complete novel under the present title by A. C. McClurg in October 1917.Full of swordplay and daring feats, the story is considered a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Carter and the Giant of Mars is the eleventh and final book in the Barsoom series by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs. It is not a novel, but rather a collection of two John Carter of Mars stories. The first story was originally published in 1940 by Whitman as a Better Little Book entitled John Carter of Mars. Although credited to Edgar Rice Burroughs, it was written (and illustrated) by his son, John Coleman Burroughs[1] and was later expanded and re-published in the January issue of Amazing Stories in 1941 as "John Carter and the Giant of Mars", the name it goes under in the collection. The second story, "Skeleton Men of Jupiter", was first published in Amazing Stories in 1943. Intended as the first in a series of novelettes to be later collected in book form, in the fashion of Llana of Gathol, it ends with the plot unresolved, and the intended sequels were never written. Several other writers have written pastiche endings for the story.[citation needed] The first edition of John Carter of Mars (a title that Burroughs never used for any book in the Barsoom series) was published in 1964 by Canaveral Press, fourteen years after his death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Carter is prospecting in Arizona when he finds himself on the run from Apaches. He hides in a cave and is mysteriously transported to Mars! There he meets the Tharks, green martians who stand fifteen feet tall and have six arms. Carter discovers he has incredible strength on Mars because of the lesser gravity, and soon becomes a respected warrior. Carter soon meets Dejah Thoris, a princess of Mars from the red martian race. He rescues her and falls in love, but must fight to protect her. A Princess of Mars was originally serialized in All Story Magazine back in 1912. Edgar Rice Burroughs was worried that the far-out nature of the tale would make it difficult for him to keep a job because employers would think he was too strange, so he asked for Under the Moons of Mars (as it was called when it ran in the magazine) to have Normal Bean as the author to drive home the fact that he was still a regular guy. Alas, the typesetter thought Normal was a typo, so the author was presented as Norman Bean. A Princess of Mars was made into a fun movie by Disney, but it tanked at the box office, so the further adventures are unlikely to make it to the silver screen any time soon. A Princess of Mars is a classic science fiction Romance (with a capital R) and has been influential on authors, artists and filmmakers from James Cameron to Ray Bradbury. Carl Sagan had a map of Barsoom hanging in the hallway outside his Cornell University office. This is the Large Print Edition featuring easy to read 16 point type!
