Book Mismatch Unemployment

Download or read book Mismatch Unemployment written by Aysegul Sahin and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We develop a framework where mismatch between vacancies and job seekers across sectors translates into higher unemployment by lowering the aggregate job-finding rate. We use this framework to measure the contribution of mismatch to the recent rise in U.S. unemployment by exploiting two sources of cross-sectional data on vacancies, JOLTS and HWOL, a new database covering the universe of online U.S. job advertisements. Mismatch across industries and occupations explains at most 1/3 of the total observed increase in the unemployment rate, whereas geographical mismatch plays no apparent role. The share of the rise in unemployment explained by occupational mismatch is increasing in the education level.

Book Has COVID 19 Induced Labor Market Mismatch Evidence from the US and the UK

Download or read book Has COVID 19 Induced Labor Market Mismatch Evidence from the US and the UK written by Carlo Pizzinelli and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies whether labor market mismatch played an important role for labor market dynamics during the COVID-19 pandemic. We apply the framework of S ̧ahin et al. (2014) to the US and the UK to measure misallocation between job seekers and vacancies across sectors until the third quarter of 2021. We find that mismatch rose sharply at the onset of the pandemic but returned to previous levels within a few quarters. Consequently, the total loss in employment caused by the rise in mismatch was smaller during the COVID-19 pandemic than during the Global Financial Crisis. The results are robust to considering alternative definitions of job seekers and to using a measure of effective job seekers in each sector. Preliminary evidence suggests that increased inactivity among older workers, the so called She-cession (particularly in the US) and shifting worker preferences amid strong labor demand are more prominent explanations for the persistent employment shortfall vis-à-vis pre-COVID levels.

Book Handbook of Research on Remote Work and Worker Well Being in the Post COVID 19 Era

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Remote Work and Worker Well Being in the Post COVID 19 Era written by Wheatley, Daniel and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-04-16 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the introduction of policies to combat COVID-19, far greater numbers of employees across the globe—including those with limited job autonomy—have moved to undertake their entire job at home. Although challenging in the current climate, embracing these flexible modes of work such as working at home, including relevant investment in technology to enable this, will not only deliver potential organizational benefits but also increase the adaptability of the labor market in the short and longer terms. Although perhaps not the central concern of many in the current climate, “good” home-based work is achievable and perhaps even a solution to the current work-based dilemma created by COVID-19 and should be a common goal for individuals, organizations, and society. Research also has shifted to focus on the routines of workers, organizational performance, and well-being of companies and their employees along with reflections on the ways in which these developments may influence and alter the nature of paid work into the post-COVID-19 era. The Handbook of Research on Remote Work and Worker Well-Being in the Post-COVID-19 Era focuses on the rapid expansion of remote working in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic and the impacts it has had on both employees and businesses. The content of the book progresses understanding and raises awareness of the benefits and challenges faced by large-scale movements to remote working, considering the wide array of different ways in which the large-scale movement to remote working is impacting working lives and the economy. This book covers how different fields of work are responding and implementing remote work along with providing a presentation of how work occurs in digital spaces and the impacts on different topics such as gender dynamics and virtual togetherness. It is an ideal reference book for HR professionals, business managers, executives, entrepreneurs, policymakers, researchers, students, practitioners, academicians, and business professionals interested in the latest research on remote working and its impacts.

Book excerpt: This book aims at exploring the profound effects of Covid-19 on people’s ways of life at home and at work, and offers strategies and expert advice for ‘survival’ as the world finds itself in a new reality that has formed by the pandemic. At the very core of Back to a New Normal is the premise that the virus, which continues to infect more than 137 million individuals worldwide and has caused millions of deaths, has also triggered radical changes within individual and organizational levels. At the same time, it opened opportunities that ignited human ingenuity and tested human adaptation. Taming the pandemic is urgent and essential but it is just the first step. Just as critical, is the need to be better prepared for future pandemics that are sure to occur. Focusing primarily on the latter, the book’s chapters follow a how to approach by exposing the severity of Covid-19’s impact on the behaviors of people and organizations, and effective ways for managing the pandemic’s unfolding consequences with an eye on the future. For that purpose, we asked a group of experts from the academia and practitioners from various fields to share their know how and experience dealing with the consequences of the pandemic, and offer strategies for coping with its harmful effects. Book After the Pandemic

Download or read book After the Pandemic written by Randy Whitaker and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-10-10 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many things define a job seeker--experience, education, first impressions, connections, passion, and the value you might bring to the company you wish to work for. For decades, the perceived ideal candidate would have all of the above, most of the above; however, a good candidate would have a four-year college degree. To a great extent, an employer still would like someone with a four-year college degree. However, I believe this is changing. The need for those who work with their hands and those who are willing to work their way up through the various levels of an organization is becoming more and more desired by companies. The time it will take you to earn your degree, you could be making a nice living and will have accrued zero debt in the process. Plus, after working in an industry of your choice, something you do have an interest in, even a passion for, you may be on equal footing with a newly hired college grad based on the four years you have been working in your industry of choice, as you continue to work your way up through the company. You will find the more value you bring to a company, the more they will look to you to assume great responsibility. Typically, the more responsibility, the greater the paycheck. What makes this book timely is the fact as COVID-19 winds down, we are seeing many labor shortages in many areas and industries. Now is the absolute best time to go to an industry experiencing a labor shortage, or enter one of the numerous industries researched in this book and get yourself the job you always wanted, without the cost and time involved with getting a four-year college education. I have nothing against getting a degree, and there are still many fields where they will always be mandatory; however, the trades, service industries, government, railroads, law enforcement, plus many others will welcome you with open arms without the need for a four-year degree. I hope this book helps.
