Book Jealous Gods and Chosen People

Download or read book Jealous Gods and Chosen People written by David Leeming and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-04 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholar Leeming offers the first comprehensive narrative study of the mythology of the Middle East, that tumultuous region that was the cradle of civilization. Leeming begins with a brief history, followed by an in-depth discussion of the mythology of the region, ranging from prehistoric figures such as the mother goddess of Catal Huyuk to Mesopotamian gods such as Marduk and mythic heroes such as Gilgamesh, to the pantheon of Egyptian mythology. He also explores the mythology of the three great monotheistic religions of the region: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In a provocative epilogue, Leeming notes that fundamentalists in the area's three religions today all see their way as the only way, forgetting that myths represent truths that are spiritual and philosophical, not historical events that can be used to justify acts of violence.--From publisher description.

Book Jealous Gods and Chosen People

Download or read book Jealous Gods and Chosen People written by David Leeming and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-04 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Esteemed scholar David Leeming, who has authored more than twelve books on mythology, here offers the first comprehensive narrative study of the mythology of the Middle East, that tumultuous region that was the cradle of civilization. Leeming begins with a brief, engaging history of the Middle East, spanning Neolithic cultures, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, the invention of writing and the rise of Egypt and Babylonia, Israel and Roman rule, and the early history of the Jews, Christians, and Muslims. This is followed by an in-depth discussion of the mythology of the region, covering individual pantheons, cosmic myths, mythic heroes, and much more. Leeming ranges from prehistoric figures such as the Mother Goddess of Çatal Hüyük to Mesopotamian gods such as Marduk and mythic heroes such as Gilgamesh, to the pantheon of Egyptian mythology, including the falcon-headed sky-sun god Horus and jackal-headed Anubis. The author also offers an illuminating exploration of the mythology of the three great monotheistic religions of the region: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In a provocative Epilogue, Leeming depicts today's crisis in the Middle East as "violent, clearly immoral, and illegal actions" justified by "what can only be called myths." He notes that fundamentalists in the area's three religions all see their way as the only way, forgetting that myths represent truths that are spiritual and philosophical--not historical events that can be used to justify acts of violence. With key maps, illustrations, bibliography, and index, Jealous Gods and Chosen People provides an inclusive, authoritative, and captivating account of a mythology that remains a potent--and often destructive--force in the world today.

Download or read book From Yahweh to Zion written by Laurent Guyénot and published by . This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is Yahweh? Where did he come from? How did this jealous, vengeful, exclusivist god shape the destiny of his chosen people? Can we trace a direct connection, through twenty-five centuries, linking the cult of Yahweh to contemporary Zionism? It all starts with the Old Testament, the ur-text for any serious inquiry into the Jewish question. That book ¿ more correctly known as the Torah ¿ does not simply recount the history of a people. It gives the children of Israel the keys to their divinely-ordained destiny. It was Jacob, son of Isaac, who returned from exile and took the name Israel: a name inherited by the whole Jewish people long before it designated a nation-state. That single name unites the patriarch, the people, and the promised land. The history of the Jewish people is intertwined with the history of humanity. What role did Jews play in the fall of Byzantium? How have they influenced the Christian church? What role did they play in the two terrible ¿European civil wars¿ of the first half of the twentieth century? Yahweh¿s people has always lived apart from the rest of humanity, endlessly reproducing the same Biblical schema: the Babylon captivity, the flight from Egypt, the Book of Esther. This psychological template for the children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob unites them, alone against the world, from the vengeance holiday of Purim to the sacralized memory of the Holocaust. Even the creation of the modern nation-state of Israel has had no effect on the ¿invisible walls¿ of the ¿Jewish prison.¿This book is not just a scholarly inquiry into the history of an idea. It is also an appeal to our Jewish brothers and sisters to liberate themselves from a mythology that imprisons them in a schizophrenic relationship to the world. Alternately a chosen people and a cursed people, a people carrying a divine message and a people who kill the divine messengers, eternal guides to humanity and its eternal victims: To be born Jewish is to be born beneath the heavy weight of 2,500 years of history.

Book excerpt: Is the Bible the word of God? This classic of atheistic literature has the answer, and it's a loud and profound NO! American writer JOSEPH WHELESS (1868-1950) employs all the tools of the logician, from the self-evidence of reason to the words of the very proponents of the attitudes he strives to dismiss, to condemn Christianity as nonsense. Wheless roundly debunks. . the patriarchs and the covenants of Yahweh . the wonders of the Exodus . the forty years in the wilderness . the "ten commandments" and the "law" . the "conquest" of the promised land . the holy priests and prophets of Yahweh . the "prophecies" of Jesus Christ . the inspired "harmony of the Gospels" . the Christian "plan of salvation" . and more. This is a highly provocative work, one that should be explored by believers and doubters alike. ALSO AVAILABLE FROM COSIMO: Wheless's Forgery in Christianity

Book Do My Prophets No Harm

  • ISBN : 1608998452
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Do My Prophets No Harm written by Robert Kimball Shinkoskey and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-03-03 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A foundational law promoting worship of the God of the Exodus (the Decalogue's First Commandment) has little meaning without a government policy permitting such worship. Robert Kimball Shinkoskey discusses policies in the Bible which enact freedom of religion for prophets and other dissidents who work to restore worship of the God of their ancestors. In the process, he challenges the theological idea of the cessation of prophecy. New revelation from God is necessary to rescue ancient Israel from backsliding and restore her to a place of security and tranquility in a Mediterranean world gone mad with imperial war-making.

Book A Modern Introduction to Theology

Download or read book A Modern Introduction to Theology written by Philip Kennedy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-09-22 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Kennedy, here, offers the first book that any student - with or without religious convictions - can profitably use to get quickly to grips with the essentials of the Christian religion: its history and its key thinkers, its successes and its failures. Most existing undergraduate textbooks of theology begin from essentially traditional positions on the Bible, doctrine, authority, interpretation, and God. What makes Philip Kennedy's book both singularly important and uniquely different is that it has a completely new starting-point. The author contends that traditional Christian theology must extensively overhaul many of its theses because of a multitude of modern social, historical and intellectual revolutions. Offering a grand historical sweep of the genesis of the modern age, and writing with panache and a magisterial grasp of the relevant debates, conflicts and controversies, "A Modern Introduction to Theology" moves a tired and increasingly incoherent discipline in genuinely fresh and exciting directions, and will be welcomed by students and readers of the subject.

Book All The God We Cannot See Why There is God

Download or read book All The God We Cannot See Why There is God written by Sam Oputa and published by NYBookz. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To suggest that there are aliens is mind blowing but to also suggest, that that becomes an avenue to deny the existence of the one God—Consciousness—might be considered as an utter nonsense. There is Cosmic Consciousness always. There are many gods but there is one Consciousness. Whether you can differentiate the very many gods and the only ONE Consciousness is what differentiates you and sets you apart from a follower—a religionist, an atheist or a theist of a different kind. Whether or not you believe/understand Consciousness, your afterlife is guaranteed because you are the creation/evolution of Consciousness. You are simply here to experience creation in a yin and yang—a duality. Meanwhile, do you recall that biblical Moses asked "God" for an identification? Consciousness does not work like a God and a prophet. Consciousness lets you do your thing after all, you are experiencing the creations of Consciousness. Moses could no longer identify which God that was given the messages because they were doing a doublespeak. There were simply too many Gods. What follows is a cautious search for answers. The answers seem to create more confusions. Should the word God be redefined? The Old Testament simply did not propagate the concept of monotheism even though we are taught to accept and profess it was/is so. In fact, Egypt has the record at a practice for monotheism through Akhenaten. Though religious people today would have dismissed Akhenaten as a worshipper of the Sun, they failed to acknowledge that the Sun God representation is an allegory. The sun, moon, the sea, snakes, etc., are just symbols depicting a God. There must be tension here and it is obvious if you think about it. Polytheism is simply and without qualification the belief in more than one God. Thus, on the most common way of understanding polytheism, Christian belief will not be monotheism, but clearly polytheism. Read it all here.

Download or read book Answering the Music Man written by B. Kyle Keltz and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dan Barker, ex-preacher and co-founder of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, travels widely, arguing in debates and speaking on his beliefs that Christianity is false, God does not exist, and the Bible is filled with errors and mythology. He has been touted as one of America’s leading atheists. Yet close examination of his arguments shows that Barker’s reasons for disbelief are poorly reasoned and miss the mark as they are aimed at a mistaken caricature of Christian theism. Answering the Music Man exposes Barker’s misunderstandings of Christianity and provides compelling answers to Barker’s arguments.

Book The Bride of Christ A Metaphor for the Church

Download or read book The Bride of Christ A Metaphor for the Church written by Norbert Schnell and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lumen gentium, the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church of the Second Vatican Council, uses various images to speak about the Church. This study is about the Church as the Bride of Christ. Unlike the great images of the Church as the People of God and the Body of Christ, the image of the Church as the Bride of Christ has never been extensively examined since the Second Vatican Council. The current research is a biblical and systematic-theological study of this image. Its main question is what this metaphor can tell us about the essence of the Church, and what its consequences are for the life of the Church today.
