Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jacopo Robusti Called Tintoretto Abridgment in essay form of a much larger work at onetime contemplated and partially completed. This fact may account for what will be felt by the real student Of Tintoretto to be a somewhat uneven treat ment of the subject. The author takes this opportunity of expressing his thanks to all those who have so kindly assisted him, especially friends in Venice. TO Miss Holbom of Aberdeen Park his gratitude is particularly due, as without her aid the book would never have been written, and to her he would dedicate this small effort. Download or read book Life and Genius of Jacopo Robusti Called Tintoretto Classic Reprint written by Frank Preston Stearns and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Genius of Jacopo Robusti, Called Tintoretto The thirty-first of May was the three hundredth anniversary of Tintoretto's death, and as yet no adequate account of him has appeared in English, or, so far as I can discover, in any language. Much that is excellent has been written about him by Taine, Ruskin, and other critics, but no clear analysis of his genius, no thorough and systematic examination of his works, has yet been placed before the public. Mr. Osler's little book is good so far as it goes, but the evolution of Tintoretto as a painter is not in it. At the same time it contains many valuable suggestions, and no other writer has appreciated so well the moral equality of this master's painting. The Italian Life of Tintoretto by Ridolfi does not appear to have been translated into English. The friends who have assisted me in the present undertaking can testify to the thorough manner in which it has been performed. Every clew that might lead to fresh information has been followed out carefully, and all publications in French, German, and Italian which could throw light on the subject have been consulted. Book excerpt: Considered one of the three greatest painters of sixteenth-century Venice, along with Titian and Veronese, Tintoretto was a bold innovator. His free, expressive brushwork made his work look unfinished to contemporaries but is now recognized as a key step in the development of oil-on-canvas painting. Even today's audiences are astonished by the superhuman scale, painterly dynamism, and visionary qualities of his work. On the 500th anniversary of Tintoretto's birth, this volume provides a comprehensive overview of his career and achievement, with fifteen essays and reproductions of more than 140 paintings--many newly conserved--as well as a selection of his finest drawings. One special contribution is a focus on the artist's portraiture.--Provided by publisher.

This book presents the first biographies of Tintoretto, by Giorgio Vasari and Carlo Ridolfi, as well as accounts from individuals who knew the artist personally. This volume also includes a translation of the marginal notes El Greco wrote in his copy of Vasari’s Life of Tintoretto, which have never before been published. Richly illustrated, with an introduction by the scholar Carlo Corsato that reconstructs Tintoretto’s career and contextualizes the contemporary sources, Lives of Tintoretto enhances our understanding of this influential Renaissance artist, who helped establish the Mannerist style.

This book was released on 2022-04-04T17:35:00+02:00 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past twenty years or so it has finally been understood that Jacopo Tintoretto (1518/19-1594) is an old master of the very highest calibre, whose sharp visual intelligence and brilliant oil technique provides a match for any painter of any time. Based on papers given at a conference held at Keble College, Oxford, to mark the quincentenary of Tintoretto’s birth, this volume comprises ten new essays written by an international range of scholars that open many fresh perspectives on this remarkable Venetian painter. Reflecting current ‘hot spots’ in Tintoretto studies, and suggesting fruitful avenues for future research, chapters explore aspects of the artist’s professional and social identity; his graphic oeuvre and workshop practice; his secular and sacred works in their cultural context; and the emergent artistic personality of his painter-son Domenico. Building upon the opening-up of the Tintoretto phenomenon to less fixed or partial viewpoints in recent years, this volume reveals the great master’s painting practice as excitingly experimental, dynamic, open-ended, and original.

Book excerpt: "Jacopo Tintoretto (1519-1594) is ranked along with Titian and Veronese as one of the most important Venetian painters of the 16th century and was well-known among his contemporaries for his rapid, inspired painting technique. Characteristic features of his late work, of which the Gonzaga Cycle is a part, are deep diagonal perspectives, complex, interconnected movements of figures and intense light effects." "In 1578 he was commissioned by Guglielmo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, to execute a series of four large-scale paintings, now known as the Margrave Series." "A rigorous examination of the paintings with the aid of x-ray technology, which has provided new insights into the workings methods of Tintoretto and his workshop associates, while assisting scholars in tracing the development of pictorial themes and the changes made during the work process, is a central focus of this publication." "In readable, soundly researched essays, the contributing authors - art historians and conservators - improve and expand our understanding of Tintoretto and the Gonzaga Cycle, adding new insights from several important perspectives."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
