Book excerpt: 'Impressive, extraordinary and exotic ... the finest novel to date by a writer who has been, for nearly two decades, one of the most original and talented not only in his own country but anywhere' New York Times Book Review 'Extraordinary ... lust, frailty and fear are all laid bare ... the peeling away of lies and social restraints to disclose the naked soul is gripping' Daily Mail 'We could be like two people who inject themselves with truth serum, and at long last have to tell it - the truth I want to be able to say to myself, "I bled truth with her," yes, that's what I want. Be a knife for me, and I, I swear, will be a knife for you.' An awkward, neurotic seller of rare books writes a desperate letter to a beautiful stranger whom he sees at a class reunion. This simple, lonely attempt at seduction begins a love affair of words between Yair and Miriam, two married, middle-aged adults, dissatisfied with their lives, yearning for the connection that has always eluded them - and, eventually, reawakened to feelings that they thought had passed them by. Their correspondence unfolds into an exchange of their most naked confessions: of desire, childhood tragedies, joys, and humiliations. Through the dialogue between Yair - a family man and surprisingly successful adulterer, whose guarded letters reveal a life of duplicity - and Miriam, at first deceptively open and warm, who fills her life with distraction to avoid a past full of painful secrets, BE MY KNIFE explores the nature and the limits of intimacy.

Download or read book My Michael written by Amos Oz and published by HMH. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Thoughtful, self-assured and highly sophisticated, full of the most skillful modulations of tone and texture. A modern Israeli Madame Bovary.” —The New York Times Book Review Set in 1950s Jerusalem, My Michael is the story of a remote and intense woman named Hannah Gonen and her marriage to a decent, pragmatic, but unremarkable geology professor named Michael. Wedded too young, emotionally unprepared for motherhood, and forced to abandon her university studies, Hannah grows bored, frustrated, and increasingly removed from the banal certainty of her immediate world. As years pass, and Michael goes off to war, Hannah’s heady fantasy life encroaches upon reality. Hannah grows ever more estranged from her husband, as the marriage begins to disintegrate. “A flickering, multi-toned Israeli novel which grapples with time’s incursions, love’s deceptions, and the diminishment of desire” (Kirkus Reviews), My Michael is at once a haunting love story and a rich, reflective portrait of a place and time that “takes the reader into the fevered mind of a young woman” (The Guardian).

Book excerpt: This acclaimed debut novel takes readers inside the mind of a young and deeply conflicted Israeli soldier: “Israel’s own The Catcher in the Rye”(The Los Angeles Review of Books). The Drive follows the emotional and psychological journey of a young Israeli soldier who is unable to carry out his military service yet terrified of the consequences of leaving the army. As the unnamed soldier and his father drive along the Coastal Highway to meet with a military psychiatrist, Yair Assulin offers a penetrating view of Israeli society, a young man in crisis, and the universal urge to resist regimentation and violence. Weary of being forced to join a larger collective, the soldier yearns for an existence free of politics, the news cycle, and perpetual battle-readiness. But to seek such a life would mean risking the respect of those he loves most. The Drive is a compelling story of an urgent personal quest to reconcile duty, expectations and individual instinct.

Download or read book Pebbles in the Sand written by Lisa Erazmus and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever been the least bit curious about, as Paul Harvey used to put it, 'the rest of the story'? Has it ever occurred to you that the lives of some of the people in the gospel stories went on after their chance (or maybe not so unplanned) encounter with the Messiah? It is a question that has plagued me since I was small. Yes, we have some accounts and even extrabiblical information about several of the main characters in the gospels, but what about the characters who are not so important to the main storyline? I posit that they are as important in God's eyes since we are "more important than the birds of the air and the flowers of the field" (Matthew 6:26c-29 paraphrase). So then, whatever happened to the boy who gave Jesus his small supply of loaves and fishes and watched them turn into a feast for the multitude? Where did the Gerasene demoniac go after the swine made off with the Legion? How did Jesus' conversation with the woman at the well effect later events in the Samaritan town of Sychar? These are some of the questions I attempt to answer in this book. For this manuscript, I use stories from all four gospels and a vivid imagination coupled with actual knowledge of the traditions and culture of the time of Jesus. Since accounts of these 'lesser' beings are not found in actual historical records, some liberties have been taken such as naming the nameless or giving families to those who may not have had one in the Bible story. Perhaps there will occur, in these musings, a deeper appreciation of how, just as rocks and seaweed on a beach change the action of the waves against the shoreline, these characters little pebbles in the sand may have helped to shape Christ's life and message in a sometimes profound way.
Download or read book The Village Gates are closed written by Danny Endlich and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-07-08 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A group of free spirited young men and women were lucky enough to experience paradise on earth. The book presents vignettes of adventure in the daily lives of the fishermen and scuba divers. A life of sun, sand and sea, away from money worries and the pressure of structured society. Instead, this life was guided by impulses, acceptance, youth and a lot of hormones. This humorous and sometimes touching story tells of the Israelis, Bedouins and foreigners in the Sinai Desert during the heady years from 1971 to 1982, when the Sinai was then evacuated and returned to the Egyptians. Danny Endlich wrote The Village Gates are closed to capture the stories which floated about for 30 years amongst the community of these Sinai people, now dispersed around the world. A spoonful of that taste is captured in this new book. The author tells these stories from the point of view of the twenty-something Israeli man he used to be, writing in English, although it is not his native tongue.
