Book Things You Learn Along the Way

Download or read book Things You Learn Along the Way written by John Menadue and published by PEARLS & IRRITATIONS P/L. This book was released on 2024-07-23 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I changed a lot over sixty years, but I never lost the dissenter tradition that I learned in my first fifteen years in the Methodist manse. I worked for Rupert Murdoch and saw how seductive power is. Later, as head of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in Canberra, I had the bizarre experience of working for Gough Whitlam in the morning of 11 November 1975 and, in the afternoon, for Malcolm Fraser after John Kerr dismissed the Whitlam Government. The anger of what happened on that fateful day is still with me. Working with Malcolm Fraser, however, proved liberating. I realised that while being an outsider was uncomfortable, it was manageable. It was as Australian Ambassador in Japan in the late 1970s that I learned most about Australia and myself. As head of the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs ( 1981-83 ), I had the most job of my life, being involved in nation-building and playing my part in ending White Australia. As CEO at Qantas ( 1986-89 ), I experienced the difficulties of dealing with a board and a Government with agendas that weren't the same as mine - and the pressure to conform. All institutions, like people, are in need of radical daily reform. Without dissenters, institutions die. In that respect I became more radical as I grew older. I now believe that the one thing above all else I've learned is that we need relationships and community if our lives are to be complete.

Book Health and Risk Communication

Download or read book Health and Risk Communication written by Rodney Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health and Risk Communication provides a critical and comprehensive overview of the core issues surrounding health and risk communication from the perspective of applied linguistics. It outlines the ways applied linguistics differs from other methods of understanding health and risk communication, assesses the benefits and limitations of the approaches used by different scholars in the field, and offers an innovative framework for consolidating past research and charting new directions. Utilizing data from clinical interactions and everyday life, this book addresses a number of crucial questions including: How are the everyday actions we take around health constructed and constrained through discourse? What is the role of texts in influencing health behaviour, and how are these texts put together and interpreted by readers? How are actions and identities around health and risk negotiated in situated social interactions, and what are the factors that influence these negotiations? How will new technologies like genetic screening influence the way we communicate about health? How does communication about health and risk help create communities and institutions and reflect and reproduce broader ideologies and patterns of power and inequality within societies? Health and Risk Communication: An Applied Linguistic Perspective is essential reading for advanced students and researchers studying and working in this area.

Book 100 Essential Things You Didn t Know You Didn t Know about Math and the Arts

Download or read book 100 Essential Things You Didn t Know You Didn t Know about Math and the Arts written by John D. Barrow and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-02-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining and illuminating collection of 100 surprising connections between math and the arts. At first glance, the worlds of math and the arts might not seem like comfortable neighbors. But as mathematician John D. Barrow points out, they have a strong and natural affinity—after all, math is the study of all patterns, and the world of the arts is rich with pattern. Barrow whisks us through 100 thought-provoking and often whimsical intersections between math and many arts, from the golden ratios of Mondrian’s rectangles and the curious fractal-like nature of Pollock’s drip paintings to ballerinas’ gravity-defying leaps and the next generation of monkeys on typewriters tackling Shakespeare. For those of us with our feet planted more firmly on the ground, Barrow also wields everyday equations to reveal how many guards are needed in an art gallery or where you should stand to look at sculptures. From music and drama to literature and the visual arts, Barrow’s witty and accessible observations are sure to spark the imaginations of math nerds and art aficionados alike.
