  • Pages : 548 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Tucker's People was published in 1943 it was praised by the New York Times for its blowtorch intensity. The idea for Tucker's People stemmed from Ira Wolfert's coverage as a reporter of the trial of James Jimmy Hines, a Tammany Hall district leader who was prosecuted by Thomas E. Dewey for letting Dutch Schultz take over the numbers game in New York. It is a penetrating, sympathetic novel of frustration and insecurity, a story of little people, many of them decent people, battling against forces they are too feeble to resist and too simple to understand, according to the Saturday Review of Literature.

Book excerpt: Two homicide cops come to Lisset Greene's studio to inform her that a man she knows only as a trafficker of boys has been murdered and has left his estate to her. The search for answers forces her into an uneasy alliance with the cops and forces her to confront the traumatic act that defines her. Lisset Greene, survivor, mother, artist, former nude dancer, has been described as volatile, passionate, and as slightly mad. And she does not like or trust cops. But when two boys in her care are shot, she, her daughter, two special friends, and the cops form an edgy partnership to find the shooters. She teams up with a female cop to find a terrified girl being hunted by crooked cops. Her daughter is kidnapped. Finding her depends on excavating information buried in the jumbled psyches of a pair of street people, and on working with Tucker in spite of the zigs and zags of their personal relationship. Finally, in a high dark place she must face the terrors of her past.

Book The Method to the Madness

Download or read book The Method to the Madness written by Allen Salkin and published by All Points Books. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Rosetta Stone for understanding Donald Trump's style, mindset, and every action, made up of over one hundred interviews with his closest associates and adversaries over the last 15 years. To his critics, Donald Trump is an impulsive, undisciplined crackpot who accidentally lucked into the presidency. But in The Method to the Madness, reporters Allen Salkin and Aaron Short reveal that nothing could be further from the truth. This objective, nonpartisan oral history shows that Trump had carefully planned his bid for the presidency since he launched what many considered to be a joke candidacy in 1999. Between 2000 and 2015, when he announced his candidacy in the lobby of Trump Tower, he was able to identify an unserved political constituency, hone a persuasive message that appealed to their needs, and deliver it effectively, despite intense media opposition. Through candid conversations with more than 100 subjects close to the President, Salkin and Short make the case that Donald Trump’s ostensibly erratic approach to politics is consistent with his carefully honed personal and professional style of information gathering, opinion seed-planting, and conclusion sharing. His business, media, and political dealings from this era serve as a guide for understanding the man, his mindset, and his every action. The Method to the Madness is an accessible and unbiased oral history that brings readers into the private rooms where decisions are made, confidences are broken, strong words fly, and not all eye-witnesses see the same scene in quite the same way. Full of scoops both large and small, this is the first book to bring Trump, the politician, into focus.

When Moss Tucker smells danger, he shoots it. When he needs shelter, he grabs it. And when he wants a woman’s touch, he buys it. But then he sees Amanda Boone’s sparkling azure eyes—an innocent beauty like her would never get involved with a law-breaking man like him. Chestnut-haired Amanda tries to keep her gaze on the vast frontier that flashes past her train window—but it keeps straying to the buckskin-clad stranger. Every inch of him is virile and strong. She knows it’s wrong to even think of his muscular arms crushing her soft curves in a fierce embrace. Yet she vows that before the trip is over he will be the one to tame her savage desire with his wild and lawless love. “Bittner’s characters spring to life . . . Extraordinary for the depth of emotion with which they are portrayed.” —Publishers Weekly

They put former-attorney-turned-clergyman Tucker Tolliver out to pastor the Atherton Church of the Holy Covenant. Second Question: How do you drive a man of the cloth away from God? Answer: You put him in charge of the Atherton Church of the Holy Covenant, a band of rag-tag Christian misfits who put the ""dys"" in ""dysfunctional."" Then you wait. Between church matriarch Agnes Hartnett, Wanda Peterson, ""The Duke of Cheswick,"" and even part-time sexton Jake Carlyle, the merry miscreants known as Atherton CHC are doing their best to drive Pastor Tucker Tolliver out. A man of the cloth on the outside; day by day he is being stripped naked on the inside. But it doesn't matter what they do. He'll never walk away from God. He can't. Not for his sake. For Sarah's. If he ever abandons his church and his God, it will be for one reason and one reason only. Because of God.

Book excerpt: Set in rural, poverty-stricken North Carolina, this "beautiful, gritty, and piercing" novel follows two young women--best friends--as they "journey through the highs and lows of friendship, love, and addiction," perfect for readers of Julie Buntin's Marlena (Erika Carter, author of Lucky You). Irene, a lonely nineteen-year-old in rural North Carolina, works long nights at the local pool hall, serving pitchers and dodging drunks. One evening, her hilarious, magnetic coworker Luce invites her on a joy ride through the mountains to take revenge on a particularly creepy customer. Their adventure not only spells the beginning of a dazzling friendship, it seduces both girls into the mysterious world of pills and the endless hustles needed to fund the next high. Together, Irene and Luce run nickel-tossing scams at the county fair and trick dealers into trading legit pharms for birth-control pills. Everything is wild and wonderful until Luce finds a boyfriend who wants to help her get clean. Soon the two of them decide to move away and start a new, sober life in Florida--leaving Irene behind. Told in a riveting dialogue between the girls' addicted past and their hopes for a better future, Bewilderness is not just a brilliant, funny, heartbreaking novel about opioid abuse, it's also a moving look at how intense, intimate friendships can shape every young woman's life.

Book 2 Flawed Lawmen

Download or read book 2 Flawed Lawmen written by Wayne Meyer and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-08-10 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two police officers that did stints in detectives decided they wanted to go back to a front line/first responder status in the department. There is a notable age difference between them but due to similar attitudes and motivations they became friends years ago. By choice they end up on the same patrol squad, with the older as the others supervisor. The two no matter how hard they try and sometimes no matter how hard they try not to, get into very dangerous, frustrating and sometimes even comedic situations. Unfortunately being a police officer isn’t very popular in current times. These officers were active in the mid 90’s and the public was a little more supportive but police administrations weren’t necessarily so. No matter what the era, persons in higher stations do not want to lose their positions due to the actions of over zealous underlings. These two keep trying to do things right and the right things, but due to some frail human qualities and a thing called Murphy’s Law, things do not usually end very well for them. If you have any sense of right and wrong or what’s fair and what isn’t, you should find yourself cheering and hoping they will survive and over come all adversities. If not you may be more pragmatic and think they are morons and should have known better. Because, realistically they have no one else to blame but each other, for putting themselves in those positions. Judge for yourself.
