Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book: A novel about growing up in a remote corner of Vermont, from the author Richard Russo calls “one of our very best writers.” When six-year-old Austen Kittredge was sent up north to live on his grandparents’ farm in 1948, he didn’t know that he would spend the next twelve years of his life there—or that his remarkable stay would never leave him, no matter how far he traveled. The farm in Lost Nation Hollow would become a magical place for Austen, full of eccentric people—like his stubborn but loving grandparents, whose marriage was known as the Forty Years War—wild adventures, and festering family secrets. An enchanting, startling coming-of-age novel, Northern Borders evokes a world of county fairs, heirloom quilts, and timber forests, in “a touching and unforgettable portrait of a people and time that are past” (Fannie Flagg, The New York Times Book Review). “A contemporary classic . . . A complex, yet idyllic, story of childhood in Vermont.” —Los Angeles Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering nearly 4,000 miles of land and water from Washington to Maine, the U.S.-Canadian border is the longest undefended border in the world. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection, in collaboration with other fed., state, local, tribal, and Canadian entities have the primary responsibility for security. The Sec. of Homeland Security is required to submit a report to Congress that addresses the vulnerabilities along the northern border, and provides recommendations and required resources to address them. This report examined: (1) the extent to which the DHS report to Congress is responsive to the legislative requirements; and (2) actions that may be necessary to address northern border vulnerabilities in addition to the actions addressed in the report.

This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Romantic, urgent, valuable and appealing as hell.” —Andrew McCarthy, New York Times Book Review Writer Porter Fox spent three years exploring 4,000 miles of the border between Maine and Washington, traveling by canoe, freighter, car, and foot. In Northland, he blends a deeply reported and beautifully written story of the region’s history with a riveting account of his travels. Setting out from the easternmost point in the mainland United States, Fox follows explorer Samuel de Champlain’s adventures across the Northeast; recounts the rise and fall of the timber, iron, and rail industries; crosses the Great Lakes on a freighter; and traces the forty-ninth parallel from Minnesota to the Pacific Ocean. He weaves in his encounters with residents, border guards, Indian activists, and militia leaders to give a dynamic portrait of the northland today, wracked by climate change, water wars, oil booms, and border security.

Book excerpt: "The nexus among border control, illegal immigration, homeland security, and other transnational criminal activity has been a subject of much debate in the past especially since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Because much of the immigrant population residing in the United States illegally is believed to be from Mexico, Central, and South America the focus on the border between the United States and Mexico is logical. However, the border between the United States and Canada is the largest land border between nations and represents almost 4,000 miles of poorly controlled territory and is more than twice the size of the boundary shared with Mexico. The threat is greater than the seam created by the boundary or the geography. More important, perhaps, is the potentially explosive nature of the environment created by the confluence of a myriad of issues. Concerns like the mature lines of communication (LOCs) used for trafficking and smuggling between the ports of entry (POEs), a focus on cross border economic flow at entry points, and a growing number of Syrian refugees in Canada, all come together and combine with the geography to create significant security concerns"--Abstract.
