Book Reading Programs for Young Adults

Download or read book Reading Programs for Young Adults written by Martha Seif Simpson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School and public libraries often provide programs and activities for children in preschool through the sixth grade, but there is little available to young adults. For them, libraries become a place for work—the place to research an assignment or find a book for a report—but the thought of the library as a place for enjoyment is lost. So how do librarians recapture the interest of teenagers? This just might be the answer. Here you will find theme-based units (such as Cartoon Cavalcade, Log On at the Library, Go in Style, Cruising the Mall, Space Shots, Teens on TV, and 44 others) that are designed for young adults. Each includes a display idea, suggestions for local sponsorship of prizes, a program game to encourage participation, 10 theme-related activities, curriculum tie-in activities, sample questions for use in trivia games or scavenger hunts, ideas for activity sheets, a bibliography of related works, and a list of theme-related films. The units are highly flexible, allowing any public or school library to adapt them to their particular needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Once Upon a Time: My Life with Children's Books Sheila Egoff tells the story of her working life, from her early voracious reading, through all her significant contributions to libraries in Canada and to our national understanding of our own literature for children. She brings both a critical eye and a personal touch to this book, which reads as a memoir and as an account of important developments in Canadian writing and librarianship. In this time of cuts to budgets for books and for librarians, there is much here to reflect upon.

Book excerpt: In the cold waters off the coast of northwestern Washington, the Cold War rages on. The USS Ohio, a newly refitted Trident ballistic missile submarine based in Bangor, Washington, is a source of great curiosity to the Russian military. If their intelligence is to be believed, the US Navy now possesses the technical ability to render its fleet invisible. When a scuba diver is killed in the waters that US Coast Guard Commander Matthew Reynolds patrols, Reynolds finds himself caught up in a war of international intrigue. Tanya Andrushyn, a specialist from the US Navy's satellite intelligence operation in Hawaii, is called in to investigate. Just how did the Russians manage to plant deep-water spy buoys in the waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca without being spotted? A group of specialists and their secret team of trained dolphins are also brought in to neutralize the sono-bouys. When one of the dolphins gets trapped on the ocean floor, however, Andrushyn and her team must make an impossible choice: sacrifice the animal and risk detection or risk her own life to rescue it. To even attempt such an operation, they risk disclosing the existence of top-secret underwater breathing-unit technology. She makes her decision ... and soon finds herself in need of rescue. Andrushyn suspects the sono-buoys are uploading data via satellites, so she and Reynolds try to trick the equipment into sending misinformation instead. The race is on to complete the modifications before their plan is discovered.

Book excerpt: When Alice Ozma was in 4th grade, she and her father decided to see if he could read aloud to her for 100 consecutive nights. On the hundreth night, they shared pancakes to celebrate, but it soon became evident that neither wanted to let go of their storytelling ritual. So they decided to continue what they called "The Streak." Alice's father read aloud to her every night without fail until the day she left for college. Alice approaches her book as a series of vignettes about her relationship with her father and the life lessons learned from the books he read to her. Books included in the Streak were: Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, the Oz books by L. Frank Baum, Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, and Shakespeare's plays.

Book Children s Literature and the Fin de Si cle

Download or read book Children s Literature and the Fin de Si cle written by Roderick McGillis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-11-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The close of a century invites both retrospection and prognostication. As a period of transition, it also brings a sense of uncertainty, finality, and apocalypticism. These feelings stem from various events, such as political turmoil, scientific advancements, and social change. As might be expected, literature reflects such changes and the feelings they engender. But perhaps more surprisingly, children's literature is especially sensitive to such matters, and fiction for children often struggles with dark and unpleasant issues. This book examines fin de siècle tensions in 19th- and 20th-century children's literature from around the world. Each chapter is written by an expert contributor, and the volume ranges over a disparate variety of topics. These include poetry, series books, pacifist fiction, gender issues, religion and literature, eco-criticism, minority experiences, humor and the Holocaust, fantasy and science fiction, and computer culture. In exploring these issues in relation to children's literature, the contributors reveal the shifting nature of our values and the world in which we live. Global in nature, the chapters look at children's literature from such places as Germany, Holland, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States.

Book Literary Practices As Social Acts

Download or read book Literary Practices As Social Acts written by Cynthia Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2001-07-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the social codes and practices that shape the literary culture of a combined fifth/sixth-grade classroom. It considers how the social and cultural contexts of classroom and community affect four classroom practices involving literature--read aloud, peer-led literature discussions, teacher-led literature discussions, and independent reading--with a focus on how these practices are shaped by discourse and rituals within the classroom and by social codes and cultural norms beyond the classroom. This book's emphasis on intermediate students is particularly important, given the dearth of studies in the field of reading education that focus on readers at the edge of adolescence.
