Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Illusion of "Truth" is a multifaceted look at Jesus of Nazareth, his message and religions created, not from his insights into reality, but on fantasy and lore concocted about him. Tom Nehrer builds on scholarly research through personal level of consciousness, exposing myths to find the real Yeshua who trod dusty roadways of first-century Judea. Understanding Jesus’ “Kingdom of Heaven within” requires extensive perspective. This book explores: Historical, social, political and traditional settings for Jesus appearance; The mindset of ancients – how superstitious peasants imagined divine manipulation; Modern man’s mindset – how causality is projected not only onto gods, but onto real world forces, luck, chance and fate, all illusory processes; How life really works – metaphysical connection of Self to Reality, an inner-outer flow; How beliefs create illusions – masking Reality’s flow with shared notions of “Truth” which isn’t.; Many caveats to accepting Gospel accounts as reliable reports of any substance; The real life of Jesus – how the man grew from first-century Jewish thinking to fully visionary status, aware of the Self as driving force in life; The Parables whose rich stories reveal Jesus’ awareness of the functional Oneness of Consciousness/Reality; A deeply critical look at Christianity – its early growth, smothering of alternate explanations and claims to represent true traditions back through the apostles to Jesus. That claim is shown as bogus, when Gospel writers only show apostles as unable to grasp Jesus’ Kingdom illustrations. The Illusion of “Truth” reveals not only how life works and how Jesus was fully aware of its meaning-based flow – but how Christianity grew from ancient notions and layered myth about Jesus, rather than insights from him. ,

Book Truth Stranger Than Fiction

Download or read book Truth Stranger Than Fiction written by Catharine Esther Beecher and published by . This book was released on 1850 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book relates the very personal story of Delia Salter Bacon (1811-1859), who had been a student of Beecher's at her Hartford Female Seminary, and her friendship with Alexander MacWhorter, identified in the book as Mr. A., a Yale theological graduate ten years her junior. In 1847, after two years and no prospect of marriage between the two, Leonard Bacon, Delia's brother and pastor of New Haven's First Church (Congregational), brought misconduct charges against MacWhorter in the New Haven ministerial association. Although MacWhorter was acquitted by a narrow margin, both their reputations were tarnished. However, Delia Bacon was further damaged by Beecher's well-meaning attempt to defend her in print. She moved to England where she continued to write, founding the Baconian and group theories of Shakespeare authorship which still continue to this day, all the while withdrawing gradually from public life. She became increasingly mentally unstable as time passed; she died in 1859 at the Hartford (CT) Retreat for the insane.

Book excerpt: Stranger Than Fiction: The Lincoln Curse is a revised edition consisting of 50 stories that prove, in the words of Mark Twain, sometimes truth can be stranger than fiction. According to Southern lore, a dying Confederate, versed in the dark arts, placed a curse on the Lincoln family and the Federal government. Soon afterwards, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and calamity befell everyone who assisted or abetted the Lincoln family. In the next 98 years three more American presidents were assassinated. Each time an American president has been murdered, he was in the company of a member of the Lincoln family. Mary Lincoln was with her husband the night he was shot. Robert Lincoln, the president's oldest son, was with his father when he died the next morning. Robert Lincoln was in the company of President Garfield when he was gunned down 16 years later. The same Robert Lincoln was in the company of President McKinley when he was felled by an assassin's bullet in 1901. Evelyn Lincoln, personal secretary of President Kennedy, was near the president when he was slain in 1963. Curse or coincidence? Either way it proves truth can be stranger than fiction. Read about how medical bungling killed President Washington who was accidentally bled to death and marvel at the antiquated medical procedures that prompted one doctor to propose resurrecting Washington shortly after he died. Read how President Garfield died as a result of medical bungling. Why did a Japanese soldier go on fighting World War II for 29 years after it had ended? Examine the photo of Abraham Lincoln's ghost taken by a spirit photographer and decide for yourself is it authentic or a hoax? Muse at the antics of love starved sailors who almost took their ship apart and attempted to set sail in the dilapidated vessel to gain the affections of several island women. Read about the origins of the custom of awarding presidential pardons to turkeys. Read about the deadly wolf peach and how it became a part of the American diet. You'll be intrigued by the bizarre deaths of several prominent people including a well-known detective who died from biting his tongue. Learn of General Custer's lost treasure and of the American president who once gave a press conference in the nude. Who was the queen whose corpse was given a coronation after she died? Why was an elephant publicly executed in Tennessee? Read about the wayward outlaw who was given the nickname "The stupidest outlaw in the west." Read about the outlaw who started a movie career that spanned several decades after he was shot to death. You'll be mystified at Mark Twain's premonition of his brother's death--one that came eerily true. Imagine how you would feel if you woke up one morning and read your own obituary in the paper. It happened to Mark Twain. These and many other stories will leave the reader convinced that perhaps Twain was right when he said "truth is stranger than fiction." Our hero and narrator, Dakota Stevens, is a witty and charming PI detective.... This story is highly entertaining and fun in its action and humor, but beholden to a deeper focus."* In an adrenaline-fueled case that races to the woods of Upstate New York, to Boston and the shores of Maine, to the Badlands--by foot, train, truck, boat and private jet--a seemingly simple missing persons investigation quickly becomes the most difficult and personal case of Dakota's career. A Missing Author, G-Men, Mobsters and More... Manhattan PI Dakota Stevens and his associate Svetlana Krüsh have just moved into new offices on Fifth Avenue. A pink-and-blue-haired teenage girl walks in with a problem: her older brother and guardian, a famous science fiction author, has been missing for a week. Before Dakota even has a chance to take the case, he and the girl are accosted by a horde of people all searching for the brother: government agents, thugs, mobsters, and two mysterious Chinese men. What could her brother possibly be into? A Secret that Could Change the World... In their search for the missing author, Dakota, Svetlana, and the girl must navigate a bizarre, interconnected world of foreign spies and fangirls, mobsters and murderers, government bureaucrats and corporate profiteers. In the end, Dakota exposes a secret that literally has the power to change the world. And the truth is a truth stranger than fiction. "A Truth Stranger Than Fiction is a clean, fast-paced mystery thriller, packed with unexpected shifts.... Our hero and narrator, Dakota Stevens, is a witty and charming PI detective hailing from Manhattan.... A Truth Stranger Than Fiction is definitely worth the read. Between the fast pace and the clean, fluid language this story is hard to pause, and it's thought-provoking in its real-world relevance. This story is highly entertaining and fun in its action and humor, but beholden to a deeper focus." - *The Portsmouth Review Readers Say: "Orcutt has combined a classic hard-boiled with the page-turning frenzy of a Dan Brown novel." "PI Dakota Stevens is a cross between Philip Marlowe and Jason Bourne and his partner Svetlana Krush is a chess Grandmaster with the body of a Victoria's Secret model." "Just when you think you've solved the mystery, Orcutt surprises you with another unexpected twist." "As for the characters--perfection. Flawed, funny, heroic and developed fully from the first page until the final page." "I read A Real Piece of Work in three days. Didn't get much sleep...but it was well worth it." "Dakota Stevens and his indispensable sidekick/chess champion Svetlana Krush are a delightful modern take on the noir detective style." "The author's ability to paint a picture or scene with words is astounding. This book is ripe for adaptation to film." "Orcutt weaves a story that keeps you hanging on until the very end." "People in the reviews keep mentioning Spenser/Robert B. Parker, and they're right; but add a good streak of John Le Carré, turn the roaster up a notch, and maybe you're getting in the ballpark." "Reading Orcutt is like chasing a lit fuse into a dark tunnel." "I am now stalking this author on Amazon, anxiously awaiting the release of his next book in the series." --- "Fans of Mickey Spillane's more over-the-top Mike Hammer adventures will welcome Orcutt's third Dakota Stevens outing (after 2014's The Rich Are Different). The PI has just moved into a new Manhattan office when a desperate prospective client, 18-year-old Kelsey Wright, asks him to find her missing brother, Conover, a famous science fiction writer who was working on a mysterious new work of nonfiction. But even before Dakota can agree to help Kelsey, who's also upset that she's being tailed, a string of intruders to his office, including FBI agents, thugs from Nebraska, and two mobsters, insist on learning what Kelsey knows about Conover's whereabouts. Dakota and Kelsey later go on the lam, aided by an eccentric group of allies headed by Svetlana Krüsh, a former U.S. chess champion, who plays the role of Velda (Mike Hammer's secretary) to Dakota. Readers should expect plenty of bloodshed and action en route to an unexpected resolution of the mystery." — Publishers Weekly, Booklife "A Truth Stranger Than Fiction is a clean, fast-paced mystery thriller, packed with unexpected shifts.... This story is highly entertaining and fun in its action and humor, but beholden to a deeper focus. From the strategic Mark Twain preface to the surprising climax, Orcutt takes a truth and hides it in plain sight. (4.5 stars)" — The Portsmouth Review

Book Stranger to the Truth

Download or read book Stranger to the Truth written by Lisa C. Hickman and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a privileged, eighteen year old end up in prison, convicted of one of the rarest of crimes--matricide? The literary nonfiction Stranger to the Truth explores the fatal intersection in the lives of Noura Jackson, her circle of dissolute Memphis friends, and the death of Nouras mother, Jennifer, on the eve of a popular outdoor festival. The brutal attack seemed to reflect personal and exponential rage. Tragedy stalked Noura. Her father was fatally shot when she was seventeen. A mystery never solved. A year later an auto accident claimed her best friend. Both mother and daughter were reeling from shock, grief, and confusion. The tension between them escalated until Nouras difficult teenage years yielded to something much darker. More than a whodunit, this fact-based account tells a spellbinding tale of impetuous youth and a single parent who too late assumes the role of disciplinarian, saying no to the demands of her daughter who will not listen. Weaving multiple points of view, back stories, and extensive research, Stranger to the Truth corrals a timely, complex story in an absorbing narrative. Praise for Stranger to the Truth In Stranger to the Truth, Ms. Hickman has taken a local tragedy and, with eloquence and empathy, given it universal application. The reader will find not only a gripping story, but also a moving exploration of the shadows that dwell within us all. --Howard Bahr, author of The Black Flower, The Year of Jubilo, and The Judas Field
