Book What s That Smell

    Book Details:
  • Author : Simon Hajdini
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2024-03-05
  • ISBN : 0262377799
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book What s That Smell written by Simon Hajdini and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How our sense of smell engages with philosophy, psychoanalysis, and political economy—and how it can help enrich our understanding of the nature of truth, language, economy, and sexuality. Why is it that, in Indo-European languages at least, we have no language to describe smells, leaving us (and famously Juliet) no choice but to call the scent of a rose simply “sweet”? In What's That Smell?, a groundbreaking exploration of the intersection between philosophy, psychoanalysis, and the oft-neglected sense of smell, Simon Hajdini sets out to answer this complex question. Through new readings of traditional and modern philosophical texts, Hajdini places smell at the very center of a philosophical critique of the traditional notion of truth, challenging the idea that smell is the antiphilosophical sense par excellence. Through fresh engagements with fundamental philosophical issues, original analyses of modern literature and film, and the novel use of scientific research into smell within a humanities context, Hajdini situates problems of olfaction at the very point of inception of cultural life. He proposes that ontology, civilization, and capitalist economy alike can be said to amount to "shit management." And only by following the philosophically most deplorable of the senses, the book argues, can we better understand the central philosophical, psychoanalytical, and political issues of truth, sex, and exploitation.

Book That s What They Used to Say

Download or read book That s What They Used to Say written by Donald L. Fixico and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a child growing up in rural Oklahoma, Donald Fixico often heard “hvmakimata”—“that’s what they used to say”—a phrase Mvskokes and Seminoles use to end stories. In his latest work, Fixico, who is Shawnee, Sac and Fox, Mvskoke (as “Muskogee” is spelled in the Mvskoke language), and Seminole, invites readers into his own oral tradition to learn how storytelling, legends and prophecies, and oral histories and creation myths knit together to explain the Indian world. Interweaving the storytelling and traditions of his ancestors, Fixico conveys the richness and importance of oral culture in Native communities and demonstrates the power of the spoken word to bring past and present together, creating a shared reality both immediate and historical for Native peoples. Fixico’s stories conjure war heroes and ghosts, inspire fear and laughter, explain the past, and foresee the future—and through them he skillfully connects personal, familial, tribal, and Native history. Oral tradition, Fixico affirms, at once reflects and creates the unique internal reality of each Native community. Stories possess spiritual energy, and by summoning this energy, storytellers bring their communities together. Sharing these stories, and the larger story of where they come from and how they work, “That’s What They Used to Say” offers readers rare insight into the oral traditions at the very heart of Native cultures, in all of their rich and infinitely complex permutations.

Book Why Did Jesus Die and What Does That Have to Do with Me

Download or read book Why Did Jesus Die and What Does That Have to Do with Me written by Fred R. Anderson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at atonement biblically, theologically, historically, and sacramentally. Biblically it is tied to Scripture’s narrative of humanity’s failure to fulfill God’s intention and God’s subsequent covenant with Abraham fulfilled in Jesus. Theologically, in Jesus the eternal Logos became incarnate to fulfill God’s intention to deal with sin and begin again with a new creation. Jesus’ death was not a payment for anything to anyone! It was the Triune God’s non-violent way of absorbing, defeating, and overcoming sin and death for the world. Two chapters focus on sacrifice: how it functioned in Israel’s life with God, how Paul and Hebrews use it, and how it thereafter took on pagan connotations. Historically, three chapters review the development of atonement theories through Gustav Aulén’s Christus Victor. After reviewing atonement theologies of the last seventy-five years—especially feminist critiques of them—this retrieves Irenaeus and Athanasius, offering an understanding of atonement influenced by Baillie, Barth, Moltmann, Torrance, Von Balthazar, Tanner, and Weaver. Sacramentally, it describes how atonement is realized through the word, baptism, Eucharist, and prayer. Sacramental “atonement” nurtures those “in Christ” as members of God’s new creation through Jesus’ continuing high priestly ministry of atonement, until his final return.

Although the story is based on her own mother's dilemmas in aging, beginning when her mother turned eighty-eight years-old, Joyce found the writing to be both joyous and cathartic to fictionalize. "The writing helped me to believe that my mother really thought these things that make this book my heartfelt gift to her memory. "For a long time, sadness blocked me from finishing our story, but my mother's dignity and the time I spent with her encouraged me to translate the traumas of aging into a story of love and respect. "Thank you, Mom, for taking me with you in your final hours."
