Book excerpt: Dog-Gone Good Medicine gives the reader a look behind the curtain of a small town's veterinarian's practice life and see what is really important: the love shared between pets and people and how we can make it better. A family vet for four decades, Bert Platt has served generations of pets and families through his small animal practice, becoming an extended part of their lives. His experiences with pets has extended to almost every aspect of veterinary practice: from day to day small animal medical care to working with government agencies on pet care issues to serving as a livestock veterinary missionary in Africa. He has been blessed to be able to experience the exciting and fun times as well as the difficult ones, and those experiences have changed his life. By sharing them in this book, Bert allows the readers to be changed as well, helping them understand how they can make their own pet relationships more meaningful. Dog Gone Good Medicine goes beyond the many books on pet health care, providing not just the what and how of pet care, but getting to the heart of who pets really are and why they mean so much to their families. Through many specific patient experiences, Bert helps explain the best ways to keep pets healthy, and also the best ways to keep pet relationships healthy. The reader will save money by following his recommendations on feeding and medical care, laugh as he recounts the many humorous and ironic episodes that are universally experienced by veterinarians and their patients, and perhaps remember their own tough times as Bert shares how he and his family have responded to losing their own beloved family pet. Along the way we get some answers to the basic questions that every pet owner asks: What kind/breed/size pet is best for me? What food/treats/toys/medicines are best for my pet? What the most important things I can do to keep my pet healthy and happy? But we also get the answers to questions we didn't even know we were asking: How will

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Book Talking with Your Vet about Your Pet

Download or read book Talking with Your Vet about Your Pet written by James Kennerly and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following is a book of questions (and some statements) the average pet owners might ask their veterinarians and the answers/dialogue they can expect or my recommendations. Note that there are medical and anatomical terms used in the text, to which I will refer you to either a medical dictionary or the Internet if necessary to understand . Dr. James Kennerly has been a vet for over thirty-seven years. He graduated from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. After graduation, he completed an internship at a centralized surgery and emergency hospital in Akron, Ohio. He was under the tutelage of nine experienced veterinarians, a board-certified ophthalmologist, a dermatologist, a radiologist, plus a host of support staff. He has practiced in San Diego County, California, for over thirty years. He is married to Janice, and they have a son, David; a daughter, Cara; a son-in-law, Brandon; and their first grandson, Langston. In the past, they have had a menagerie of animals such as horses, geese, dogs and cats, tortoises, and fish, plus his favorites, a cockatiel named Soni Ali Behr, who lived to be twenty-one, and Mr. Bo Jangles, a cat with a "John Wayne swagger." For twenty five years I have tried to change the verbiage of the pet owners I met. They would say "the vet," and I would say: you mean "the veterinarian"; They looked at me with a puzzled look, and then would either avoid the term, or continue to say: "the vet." Over the years, I have come to realize that "the vet" is a term of endearment to the pet owner. Therefore you will find the veterinarian referred to in this book as "the vet" ninety nine percent of the time.

Book Coping with Stress and Burnout as a Veterinarian

Download or read book Coping with Stress and Burnout as a Veterinarian written by Nadine Hamilton and published by Australian Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leading evidence-based resource supporting better wellbeing for veterinary professionals The best way to tackle the unique nature of veterinary stress that can lead to anxiety, depression and suicide is to use evidence-based research to create an intervention able to have a scientifically measurable positive impact on wellbeing. That's why psychologist Dr Nadine Hamilton wrote this book after spending over 15 years researching, working with thousands of stressed vets, and consulting with industry associations, practice managers and owners. This unique resource combines reading on mindfulness, positive psychology, wellbeing, and resiliency training with a ‘toolkit’ of practical tasks and tips to teach people how to cope with everyday pressures, so they no longer feel like suicide is the only way out. Its approach has been tested with statistically significant results showing reduced stress, depression, anxiety, and negative affect. "As a vet of nearly 20 years experience, I cannot believe the difference that your book has made to the way I see myself, my profession, and my coworkers. I am genuinely enjoying being a vet again.” "There are copies of this book at every Greencross Vets clinic as a means to empower vets in their everyday routines. It's a tough conversation to have, but an important one.”Andrew McInerney, Chief Operating Officer, Greencross "I greatly enjoyed reading this book. It is an excellent resource. Every third-year DVM student at our school gets a copy of this book.” Prof. Anna Meredith, Head of Melbourne Veterinary School Being a veterinarian can be a rewarding, challenging and demanding career requiring a passion for animals, great interpersonal skills and a strong work ethic. It also has a dark and very dangerous side. The suicide rate for veterinarians is almost four times higher than the general population across the UK, Australia, US, New Zealand and Canada. The effects of working long hours, performing euthanasia on animals, emotional pressure, financial issues, unrealistic expectations, and dealing with distressed clients places considerable stress on both the vet themselves and their families at home. Failure to cope with such stress upsets mental wellbeing and can lead to serious emotional, physical, and behavioural issues. For some it leads to death. If we are to reduce this suffering we need to find out what hinders a vet’s wellbeing and use targeted solutions that work. In this unique book, psychologist Dr Nadine Hamilton presents an examination of the problem, the ways vet mental health is influenced by their daily work and the science we can use to tackle it head on. Drawing from the fields of positive psychology, acceptance and commitment therapy, career construction theory, and resiliency studies, she outlines a promising new weapon in the profession’s fight against suicide. Included in this book is a concise self-help version of her ground-breaking Coping and Wellbeing Program for Veterinary Professionals — an evidence-based psycho-educational intervention to educate vets on how to develop protective attitudes, enhance wellbeing, and increase their coping skills. This is a book for every veterinarian, veterinary student and veterinary nurse.
