Book Introduction to a History of Ironmaking and Coal Mining in Pennsylvania

Download or read book Introduction to a History of Ironmaking and Coal Mining in Pennsylvania written by James M. Swank and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to a History of Ironmaking and Coal Mining in Pennsylvania: Contributed to the Final Report of the Pennsylvania Board of Centennial Managers That there may be no misunderstanding. I wish distinctly to impress upon the mind of the reader the fact that I have not attempted to write a complete history of ironmaking and coal mining in Pennsylvania, but have assumed only to write such an introduction to their history as will contain a record of the principal events which mark the beginning of these two great industries of our State, and mark, also, the leading events in their subsequent development. Beginning with their beginning, I end with the progress they had made down to 1876, but only glance at the great gap between. Otherwise stated, the scope of the following pages embraces a statement of the first enterprises in iron making and coal mining in Pennsylvania, a reference to significant periods of their development, and a summary of ultimate results. Greater amplitude and detail could only have been possible by completely changing the plan upon which the two essays had been projected. I have undertaken to preserve only that part of the history of our iron and coal industries that is of most value and is in most danger of being lost. To those who would have been gratified to see in this volume a description of existing ironworks in Pennsylvania, it is proper that we should say that the American Iron and Steel Association published in 1876 a complete list of all such enterprises in the United States, which list is now being revised for publication in the spring of the present year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Allegheny Iron and Coal Mining Company's Property in McKean County, Pennsylvania, 1856 On a full paid-up capital of the above sum may be yearly realized. It is assumed that only three months' credit is given, and the actual working capital is returned three times a year, and everything made to bear a profit. There are some contingencies, however, that must be taken into consideration, such as fluctuations in the metal market, losses, delays, and accidents incidental to all such works as mining and metallurgy. These are to be set against gross profits; but I am very well assured that, after making ample provision for those casualties and depreciation, a dividend of twenty per cent. May be declared annually. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Report on the Halsey Estate Coal and Iron Mines Situate in Sergeant Township McKean County Pennsylvania Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Halsey Estate Coal and Iron Mines, Situate in Sergeant Township, McKean County, Pennsylvania The boats on the Rochester Canal carry 100 tons.capacity; and afterwards it was doubled again with locks greatly enlarged in capacity and reduced in number. Before this last improvement was made, a railroad began to be talked of, as necessary. The canal quaked with fear that the railway would take the whole carrying trade. The public said, competition will destroy both. The result proves that both works are taxed to their fullest capacity by a tonnage, greater far than all the calculations of both: so much so, that finding there is more coal yearly rpressing for carriage, than they can provide means to carry, the two companies (whose canal and railroad run side by side, each often crossing the other, ) meet in friendly and sensible accord every season, divide the tonnage according to their carry ing means, fix a stifl' tariff of charges, and indulge in dividends to please themselves. We give this bit of history to show that, in this country, even the most sanguine and the most interested have in all their early estimates of the consumption of coal, fallen short of the actual quantities demanded by the market. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Red Iron Ores of East Tennessee General statement - The attention of the iron makers of the United States has been turning toward the Southern iron ore fields to a consider able extent during the last decade, but more particularly since it has been proved possible successfully to make basic open hearth steel from South ern iron ore. In response to many inquiries for information concerning the various ore fields and the utilization of the ores, the State Geological Surveys of Alabama and Georgia have already issued special reports on these subjects and the United States Geological Survey has issued several reports, some of them covering interstate areas. Scope of this report - This bulletin on the Red Iron Ores of East Tennessee, written for publication by the State Geological Survey of Tennessee, is intended to describe the red iron ores of the northern part of what has, in a broad way, been termed the Chattanooga District. The material presented herewith will, it is expected, be combined later with descriptions of the ore beds extending southwest of Chattanooga, as far as Springville, Alabama, and southeast of Chattanooga as far as Rome, Georgia, and be published as a bulletin by the United States Geological Survey. Book Report of a Survey and Exploration of the Coal and Ore Lands Belonging to the Allegheny Coal Company

This book was released on 2018-05-20 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of a Survey and Exploration of the Coal and Ore Lands Belonging to the Allegheny Coal Company: In Somerset County, Pennsylvania; Accomppanied by Maps, Profiles and Sections By thus ascertaining the position and eleva tions of the beds as found in different parts of the formation, it was a matter for comparison and calculation, to fix the section of the coal-trough in each direction and to compute its depth and other dimensions. Having completed these surveys and levellings for geological purposes, the other objects to be effected on the ground, were to as certain the length and grade of a line of rail-road which might connect the lands of the company with the line of public improvements, by which they might be rendered available; and to measure the thickness of the several mineral deposits, tak ing from each the proper samples for analysis. The field work being thus completed, it became necessary to arrange all the data thus obtained, to plot and reduce the maps, profiles, and sections; and to go through an analysis of coals, iron ores, and limestones, found in the various exposures of the beds.
