Book Investigations of Patterns of Vegetation Distribution and Abundance of Small Mammals and Nesting Birds and Behavioral Ecology of Arctic Foxes at Demarcation Bay Alaska

Download or read book Investigations of Patterns of Vegetation Distribution and Abundance of Small Mammals and Nesting Birds and Behavioral Ecology of Arctic Foxes at Demarcation Bay Alaska written by Robert M. Burgess and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyses of habitat use, activity budget and activity patterns of arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) at known distribution and abundance of prey are presented. Behavioral data on foxes were collected by direct observation of 2 radio-collared females and their mates in summer 1979. Prey availability was determined through monitoring bird nest success and phenology, mark-recapture studies of small mammals, and analysis of vegetation patterns and distribution of prey in 1978 and 1979. Prey availability fluctuated dramatically within each season and between years. Foxes relied almost exclusively on avian prey in 1979. Small mammal densities were extremely low in 1979 and foxes failed to rear pups in that year. Fluctuating prey availability did not affect fox activity patterns, activity budget or habitat use. The significance of caching in regulating food availability and the relationship between scent-marking and foraging efficiency are discussed.

The Natural History of an Arctic Oil Field synthesizes decades of research on these myriad impacts. Specialists with years of field experience have contributed to this volume to create the first widely available synopsis of the ecology and wildlife biology of animals and plants living in close association with an actively producing oil field. - First widely available synthesis of arctic oil field ecology and wildlife biology - Concise yet readable treatment of a diverse polar ecosystem - Useful for land managers, policy makers as well as ecologists, and population biologists - Chapters authored by recognized authorities and contributions are peer-reviewed for accuracy and scientific rigor - Illustrations attractively designed to enhance comprehension

Book excerpt: Curious, innovative and mysterious survivors of the arctic tundra. Ever since explorers began venturing north into the harsh lands of the arctic, they have encountered arctic foxes in the unlikeliest of places. The arctic fox is an extraordinary creature. No bigger than a house cat, it survives on almost nothing in the middle of a land so hostile it seems incompatible with the very existence of life. The tundra is a place of endless days or endless nights where temperatures can reach -58°F (-50°C) for weeks at a time, and where the terrain consists mostly of ice sheets, pack ice, ice floes, icebergs, ice shelves and glaciers. Arctic Fox tells the story of this animal from its evolutionary beginnings to its difficult life in the far north involving: Mating and raising a family Hunting and scavenging Its relationship with the polar bear and other arctic inhabitants The fur trade Adaptation to seasonal changes The never-ending struggle for survival in a fragile and vanishing environment. This informative, lively and beautifully photographed book will fascinate naturalists and general readers.

Book excerpt: A definitive guide to the depth and breadth of the ecological sciences, revised and updated The revised and updated fifth edition of Ecology: From Individuals to Ecosystems – now in full colour – offers students and practitioners a review of the ecological sciences. The previous editions of this book earned the authors the prestigious ‘Exceptional Life-time Achievement Award’ of the British Ecological Society – the aim for the fifth edition is not only to maintain standards but indeed to enhance its coverage of Ecology. In the first edition, 34 years ago, it seemed acceptable for ecologists to hold a comfortable, objective, not to say aloof position, from which the ecological communities around us were simply material for which we sought a scientific understanding. Now, we must accept the immediacy of the many environmental problems that threaten us and the responsibility of ecologists to play their full part in addressing these problems. This fifth edition addresses this challenge, with several chapters devoted entirely to applied topics, and examples of how ecological principles have been applied to problems facing us highlighted throughout the remaining nineteen chapters. Nonetheless, the authors remain wedded to the belief that environmental action can only ever be as sound as the ecological principles on which it is based. Hence, while trying harder than ever to help improve preparedness for addressing the environmental problems of the years ahead, the book remains, in its essence, an exposition of the science of ecology. This new edition incorporates the results from more than a thousand recent studies into a fully up-to-date text. Written for students of ecology, researchers and practitioners, the fifth edition of Ecology: From Individuals to Ecosystems is anessential reference to all aspects of ecology and addresses environmental problems of the future.
