Book UVB Instrumentation and Applications

Download or read book UVB Instrumentation and Applications written by Ann R Webb and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-07-28 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excellent summary of solar UV measurement for anyone involved in, or contemplating, measuring the UV part of the solar spectrum. The book is addressed predominantly to the newcomer to this expanding area of environmental measurement, but contains sufficient detail and practical information to be a valuable reference for the more experienced worker. The practical considerations of solar UV measurement are clearly described and the book explores the current state of the art of UV monitoring, explained by the historical demand for data. The many applications of solar UV data are discussed and the importance of making appropriate measurements and collecting sufficient supporting data for the analysis required of these applications is highlighted.

Book A New Spectrophotometer for Measuring Ultraviolet Sky Brightness and Direct Solar Radiation

Download or read book A New Spectrophotometer for Measuring Ultraviolet Sky Brightness and Direct Solar Radiation written by Paul Bener and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A transportable spectrophotometer for measuring ultraviolet sky brightness and solar radiation from 295 to 400 millimicrons is described. This instrument serves for a study of atmospheric scattering by comparing measured and theoretical values of intensity. Its main components are: A double monochromator Zeiss MM 12, a telescope, a photomultiplier enclosed in a cooling box and a mounting for following the sun and scanning the sky according to the astronomical and horizontal system respectively. Neutral attenuation filters are applied to bridge the interval of brightness (100,000) between sun and sky and to adapt the sensitivity to the varying sky brightness. The components of sky brightness polarized parallel and normal to the entrance slit are measured separately. An effective spectral bandwidth between 0.9 and 2.5 millimicrons is normally applied. Mean values of the signal current are measured by means of a Keithley 610 A electrometer and a voltage-to-frequency converter. Photon counting is applied for the lowest levels of intensity. The overall accuracy amounts to plus or minus 7% for intensity and to plus or minus 3% to 5% for the ratio between sky brightness and solar radiation.

Book Human Bioclimatology

Download or read book Human Bioclimatology written by Andris Auliciems and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A. AULICIEMS Living organisms respond to atmospheric variability and variation, and over time morphological and process differentiations occur both within individuals and the species, as well as in the environment itself. In systems language, the concern is with the atmospheric process-response system of energy and matter flows within the biosphere. The study of such interactions between living organ isms and the atmospheric environment falls within the field of bioclimatology, alternatively referred to as biometeorology. Amongst the more readily recognizable study areas under the bioclimatolog that investigate the effects of atmospheric variation and ical umbrella are those variability upon 1. Terrestrial and aquatic ecology (zoological, botanical and ethological), natural resource production and management (including silviculture, agri culture, horticulture, and grassland, wetland, and marine systems). 2. Stress, morbidity and mortality in animals and humans (including physiolog ical and psychological adaptations). 3. The built environment (all aspects of planning, urban design, and architec ture). 4. Economic systems and social activities (including organizational, individual, and group behavior and management). In addition, bioclimatology is very much concerned with the feedback loop, that is both 5. The inadvertent modification of the atmosphere by living systems, especially human, i.e., studies of pollution, changes to atmospheric amenity, and the processes of deterioration of landscape (deforestation and desertification), and 6. The advertent modifications of natural energy and matter flows within urban areas and indoor climate constructions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the rapid developments in the UV-B measurement techniques and the rapidly growing research in the field in the late 80's and early 90's, we organized a large gathering of distinguished experts in a NATO Advanced Study Institute, held in Halkidiki, Greece on October, 2-11. 1995. The Institute was organized so as to include state of the art lectures on most aspects of solar ultraviolet radiation and its effects. This was achieved by extended lectures and discussions given in five sessions by 27 lecturers and a demonstration of filed measurements and calibration techniques at the end of the Institute. The ASI began with the sun and fundamentals on solar radiative emissions and their variability in time and continued with the interaction of solar Ultraviolet with the atmosphere through the complex scattering processes and photochemical reactions involved. Particular emphasis was given to changes in atmospheric composition imposed by different manifestations of the solar activity cycle. as well as on the modelling of radiative transfer through the atmosphere and the ocean under variable environmental conditions. Overviews on the ozone issue. its monitoring and variability were extensively discussed with emphasis on the observed acceleration of ozone decline in the early 90's. This acceleration had as a consequence, significant increases in UV-B radiation observed at a few world-wide distributed stations.
