Book Guide for Conducting Forensic Investigations of Highway Pavements with supplemental material on CD ROM

Download or read book Guide for Conducting Forensic Investigations of Highway Pavements with supplemental material on CD ROM written by Gonzalo R. Rada and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2013 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program Report 747: Guide for Conducting Forensic Investigations of Highway Pavements explores a process for conducting forensic investigations of pavements that is designed to help understand the reasons behind premature failures or exceptionally good performance. The process also allows for the collection of data for use in developing or calibrating performance-prediction models. The report includes example forms and checklists for use during the conduct of an investigation. These forms can be modified to suit the particular requirements and procedures for the agency. The example forms are included with the print version of the report in CD-ROM format." --Publisher description.

Book Experimental investigation of relevant road surface descriptors for tire road noise measurements on low absorbing road surfaces

Download or read book Experimental investigation of relevant road surface descriptors for tire road noise measurements on low absorbing road surfaces written by Pinay, Julien and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ihrer Arbeit in der Originalsprache: This work aims at identifying relevant road surface characteristics to mitigate tire-road noise of free-rolling tires using a systematic approach. As using open porous roads is already known as an efficient measure to reduce tire rolling noise, this study will focus on compact road surfaces which have a low acoustic absorption. Measurements on standardized ISO 10844 test tracks and on public roads are used to study the norm's representativity and its completeness.

Book Effectiveness of Noise Barriers Installed Adjacent to Transverse Grooved Concrete Pavement

Download or read book Effectiveness of Noise Barriers Installed Adjacent to Transverse Grooved Concrete Pavement written by Lloyd Allen Herman and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has reconstructed a number of roadways where asphalt pavements were replaced with random transverse grooved concrete pavements. Upon completion, residents living adjacent to the reconstructed roadways have complained of increased noise levels. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Traffic Noise Model (TNM) is used to determine if predicted traffic noise levels warrant abatement and to design the abatement structures. The public perception problem described above suggests that the model does not result in adequate noise barrier abatement designs near random transverse grooved concrete pavements. The overall goal of this project was to provide ODOT with accurate TNM noise predictions when modeling random transverse grooved concrete pavement highways. Three random transverse grooved PCC roadway sites were chosen for study where high quality sound recordings were taken. Sites 1 (Cincinnati I-275) and 2 (Troy I-75) were chosen to represent the noise quality experienced by residents adjacent to the roadway, where the residential areas were separated from the roadway by sound barriers. Site 3 (Madison County I-70) was chosen to study the attenuation of road noise with distance in an easily-characterized environment; an open soybean cropland essentially level on both sides of the roadway with no noise barrier. Through a paired t-test the research findings determined that the sample means of the TNM average pavement and the ODOT random transverse grooved pavement were not equivalent based upon a level of confidence of 95 percent. An examination of the one-third octave band frequency levels indicated that at frequencies greater than 500 Hz, the measured traffic noise levels exceeded both the TNM average pavement type and TNM ODOT random transverse grooved pavement predictions. However, at frequencies less than 500 Hz the predictions tended to exceed the measurements. It is recommended that the experimental version of TNM developed for this project, using the current ODOT random transverse grooved concrete pavement REMEL, should not be used in practice due to its potential to under-predict traffic noise levels. A new surface texture specification should also be developed for concrete pavements to replace the current specification in order to reduce tire/pavement noise levels while maintaining or improving safety and durability characteristics.

Book Centerline Rumble Strips

Download or read book Centerline Rumble Strips written by Eugene Russell and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2005 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 339: Centerline Rumble Strips (CLRS) examines current design, installation, configuration, dimension, and visibility issues associated with CLRS. The report addresses the need for guidance on warrants, benefits, successful practices, and concerns such as external noise and the reduced visibility of centerline striping material. Also addressed are pavement deterioration, ice buildup in the grooves, adverse impact on emergency vehicles, and the effect of CLRS on bicyclists. Particular attention was paid to available before-and-after CLRS installation crash data to document the safety aspects of CLRS and the availability of policies, guidelines, warrants, and costs regarding their use and design.
