Book Investigation of Nondestructive Methods for the Evaluation of Graphite Materials

Download or read book Investigation of Nondestructive Methods for the Evaluation of Graphite Materials written by G. E. Lockyer and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program of investigation was begun in April 1964, to determine nondestructive methods and techniques for evaluating and characterizing graphite materials. The properties and behavior characteristics of graphite which are important to ablative applications were identified and correlated with the applicable NDT methods and techniques during the first year. Emphasis was directed in verification of the applicability of the various NDT techniques and correlation to characterize graphite in relation to service performance has been an item of major concern. Statistical analysis of these correlations has established the significance of the correlations for predicting the related material properties. An extensive analysis of the application of NDT flaw testing and properties evaluation in regard to quality and reliability is presented. A detailed discussion of infrared technique development activities for measuring thermal properties is also presented. The influence of attenuation and the related effects of frequency distortion on velocity measurements is evaluated and described.

Book The Development of Nondestructive Methods for the Quantitative Evaluation of Advanced Reinforced Plastic Composites

Download or read book The Development of Nondestructive Methods for the Quantitative Evaluation of Advanced Reinforced Plastic Composites written by A. W. Schultz and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final report documents the completion of the fifth year of a continuing study concerned with the development of nondestructive testing techniques for quantitatively evaluating advance fiber- reinforced plastic composites. Five boron/ epoxy panels, one plain weave carbon/carbon panel, and a 3-D quartz/phenolic ssphere were nondestructively and destructively tested for mechanical properties behavior and physical properties characteristics. It was the purpose of this program to: (a) ESTABLISH PREDICTIVE CORRELATIONS BETWEEN ULTRASONICALLY-DETERMINED MODULUS VALUES AND DESTRUCTIVELY-MEASURED TENSILE, COMPRESSION, FLEXURE AND SHEAR MODULUS AND STRENGTH VALUES FOR THE 2-D composites; (b) relate 2- D and 3-D ultrasonic polar modulus values with apreviously-derived micro-mechanics- based theory for generating polar modulus values; (c) demonstrate the feasibility of applying a recently-conceived 6Interval Velocity Technique6 to reinfroced composites; (d) demonstrate the capability of a nondestructive, multiple-energy, gamma- ray radiometric technique for predicting mixture concentrations in boron/epoxy composites; and (e) investigate the use of width-and across-ply measurements of ultrasonic velocity for predicting the mechanical modes of failure occurring in composite test specimens. Book The Quantitative Significance of Nondestructive Evaluation of Graphite and Ceramic Materials

Download or read book The Quantitative Significance of Nondestructive Evaluation of Graphite and Ceramic Materials written by John W. Orner and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the research was to utilize the nondestructive testing (NDT) information, correlations, and techniques developed during previous years for the formulation of an experimental approach for verifying the quantitative significance of nondestructive evaluation of graphite and high temperature ceramic materials intended for aerospace structures and systems. As a part of the program, nondestructive evaluation was carried out on a series of billets of hot pressed diboride compositions of zirconium and hafnium with various additions hot pressed. Two grades of graphite (ATJ and RVA) were investigated to determine the significance of typical defective conditions on the physical behavior of the material. Tensile specimens containing various types of flaws, as determined by nondestructive tests, were broken and the results correlated with the NDT findings. (Author).

Book Nondestructive Evaluation of Nuclear Grade Graphite

Download or read book Nondestructive Evaluation of Nuclear Grade Graphite written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nondestructive Evaluation of Nuclear Grade Graphite Dennis C. Kunerth and Timothy R. McJunkin Idaho National Laboratory Idaho Falls, ID, 83415 This paper discusses the nondestructive evaluation of nuclear grade graphite performed at the Idaho National Laboratory. Graphite is a composite material highly dependent on the base material and manufacturing methods. As a result, material variations are expected within individual billets as well billet to billet and lot to lot. Several methods of evaluating the material have been explored. Particular technologies each provide a subset of information about the material. This paper focuses on techniques that are applicable to in-service inspection of nuclear energy plant components. Eddy current examination of the available surfaces provides information on potential near surface structural defects and although limited, ultrasonics can be utilized in conventional volumetric inspection. Material condition (e.g. micro-cracking and porosity induced by radiation and stress) can be derived from backscatter or acousto-ultrasound (AU) methods. Novel approaches utilizing phased array ultrasonics have been attempted to expand the abilities of AU techniques. By combining variable placement of apertures, angle and depth of focus, the techniques provide the potential to obtain parameters at various depths in the material. Initial results of the study and possible procedures for application of the techniques are discussed.

Book MANUFACTURING RESEARCH INVESTIGATION NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING INSPECTION PYROLYTIC GRAPHITE

Download or read book MANUFACTURING RESEARCH INVESTIGATION NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING INSPECTION PYROLYTIC GRAPHITE written by and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation objectively extends certain non-destructive test methods to include pyrolytic graphite as one of the newer materials that can be readily examined by these methods. Each of the methods used is described and basic concepts relatedto the apparatus and technique involved are reviewed. Conclusions are as follows: (1) penetrant inspection is a rapid method of deter mining connected surface structure discontinui ties; (2) the sonic method is not a reliable technique for locating internal flaws; (3) ultra sonic examination is the optimum method for determination of internal discontinuities; (4) radiography is the optimum method for nodule characteristics and micro-structure determina tion; (5) the X-ray diffraction method is the optimum method for internal stress evaluations; (6) the Eddy-Current method is the optimum for determination of parallelism of layer planes; and (7) thermal gradient methods, for use on pyrolytic graphite examinations, are not yet sufficiently developed. Results appear encouraging.
