Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facet Theory (FT) is presented in this volume as a methodological approach that combines content design and data analysis. Following a brief overview of FT design, FT data analysis and the correspondence hypotheses between the two, the authors consider the role facets play in observations and equivalence relations and discuss in detail: mapping sentences and their common range; constructing questionnaire items; correspondence hypotheses relating to FT design; bivariate regression hypotheses; and how to analyze data profiles with hypotheses for structuples and similarity structures. In conclusion, the issues of using FT in practice including measurement theory and significance testing are addressed.

Book An Introduction to Property Theory

Download or read book An Introduction to Property Theory written by Gregory S. Alexander and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-09 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the leading modern theories of property - Lockean, libertarian, utilitarian/law-and-economics, personhood, Kantian and human flourishing - and then applies those theories to concrete contexts in which property issues have been especially controversial. These include redistribution, the right to exclude, regulatory takings, eminent domain and intellectual property. The book highlights the Aristotelian human flourishing theory of property, providing the most comprehensive and accessible introduction to that theory to date. The book's goal is neither to cover every conceivable theory nor to discuss every possible facet of the theories covered. Instead, it aims to make the major property theories comprehensible to beginners, without sacrificing accuracy or sophistication. The book will be of particular interest to students seeking an accessible introduction to contemporary theories of property, but even specialists will benefit from the book's lucid descriptions of contemporary debates.

Download or read book Facet Theory written by D. Canter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work has the aim of making facet theory, and the approach to research which derives from it, more accessible to behavioral and social scientists than has been possible in the past. In a first section the book gives the background to the theory and associated methods of analysis, illustrating the major components of the ap proach in use. A second section then provides detailed examples of the applications of the facet approach in developmental, clinical, and environmental psychology, as well as in studies of attitudes and mental performance. The third section provides some further technical details on recent developments in the facet approach as well as a computer program listing. The facet approach to social and behavioral research can be traced at least to the late 1940s (as discussed by Gratch, 1973) and the logical principles on which it is based have clear roots in Descartes' algebra and Fisher's experimental designs.

Book Introduction to Information Behaviour

Download or read book Introduction to Information Behaviour written by Nigel Ford and published by Facet Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark textbook is an essential primer for students and practitioners interested in information seeking, needs and behaviour, user studies and information literacy. Introduction to Information Behaviour uses a combination of theory and practical context to map out what information behaviour is and what we currently know about it, before addressing how it can be better understood in the future. Nigel Ford argues that new understandings of information behaviour research may help maximise the quality and effectiveness of the way information is presented, sought, discovered, evaluated and used. The book introduces the key concepts, issues and themes of information behaviour, illustrates them using key research studies, and provides a clear path through the complex maze of theories and models. The book is structured to move from the basics to the more complex and employs the pedagogical device of “THINK” boxes which invite the reader to think about concepts as they are introduced in order to consolidate their understanding before moving on. Case studies are included throughout the text and each chapter concludes with a round-up of what has been covered, highlighting the implications for professional information practice. The key topics covered include: Defining information behaviour and why is it useful to know about it Information needs Information seeking and acquisition Collaborative information behaviour Factors affecting information behaviour Models and theories of information behaviour Research approaches and methodologies Designing information systems The future trajectory of information behaviour research and practice. Readership: This book will be core reading for students around the world, particularly those on library and information science courses. It will also be of interest to practitioners and professional information users, providers and developers.

Book Introduction to Many Facet Rasch Measurement

Download or read book Introduction to Many Facet Rasch Measurement written by Thomas Eckes and published by Peter Lang Copyright AG - Ipsuk. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human ratings are subject to various forms of error and bias. Since the early days of performance assessment, this problem has been sizeable and persistent. For example, expert raters evaluating the quality of an essay, an oral communication, or a work sample, often come up with different ratings for the very same performance. In cases like this, assessment outcomes largely depend upon which raters happen to provide the rating, posing a threat to the validity and fairness of the assessment. This book provides an introduction to a psychometric approach that establishes a coherent framework for drawing reliable, valid, and fair inferences from rater-mediated assessments, thus answering the problem of inevitably fallible human ratings: many-facet Rasch measurement (MFRM). Throughout the book, sample data taken from a writing performance assessment are used to illustrate key concepts, theoretical foundations, and analytic procedures, stimulating the readers to adopt the MFRM approach in their current or future professional context.

Book Facet Theory and the Mapping Sentence

Download or read book Facet Theory and the Mapping Sentence written by Paul M.W. Hackett and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second edition of Facet Theory and the Mapping Sentence: Evolving Philosophy, Use and Application (2014). It consolidates the qualitative and quantitative research positions of facet theory and delves deeper into their qualitative application in psychology, social and the behavioural sciences and in the humanities. In their traditional quantitative guise, facet theory and its mapping sentence incorporate multi-dimensional statistics. They are also a way of thinking systematically and thoroughly about the world. The book is particularly concerned with the development of the declarative mapping sentence as a tool and an approach to qualitative research. The evolution of the facet theory approach is presented along with many examples of its use in a wide variety of research domains. Since the first edition, the major advance in facet theory has been the formalization of the use of the declarative mapping sentence and this is given a prominent position in the new edition. The book will be compelling reading for students at all levels and for academics and research professionals from the humanities, social sciences and behavioural sciences.

Book Facet Theory in Organizational Research

Download or read book Facet Theory in Organizational Research written by Esther Solomon and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complexities and multiple levels of analysis involved in studying organizational phenomena require clarity in conceptualization and appropriate measurement methods to capture these dynamics. The facet approach can integrate diverse perspectives and address challenges posed by interdisciplinary organizational research. Facet Theory, a methodology conceived by Professor Louis E. Guttman, is a comprehensive research strategy. Based on set theory, it brings to the social sciences a discipline similar to mathematics and the natural sciences. It offers a formal approach to define the universe of content by uniquely addressing construct clarity and empirical verification for management studies. Relying on qualitative data, it helps generate mathematically derived models that have common structures across different research domains. Thus, Facet Theory helps render objective and quantitative what had previously appeared to be subjective and qualitative. It offers unique procedures for studies characterized by multitudes of interacting variables, promotes the systematic study of configurations, and can help advance cumulative research on organizing in teams, enterprises, or markets. The chapters in this volume provide recent advances and applications of Facet Theory, demonstrating how it enhances rigor and new insights for organizational research. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of International Studies of Management & Organization.

Book The Complexity of Bird Behaviour

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the facet theoretical framework as a tool for facilitating the conception of complex animal behaviour research and the design of research procedures through employing mapping sentences. Using the facet theoretical framework, this book takes a holistic view of bird behaviour. Components of bird behavior are identified and then reassembled to facilitate an understanding of the behaviour in the context of its natural occurrence. This provides new insight on both the parts of the behaviour and how these interact as a whole. The multi-faceted approach to designing, evaluating and understanding bird behavior presented offers a template that is adaptable for investigating a wide variety of avian species and different forms of behaviour. Behavioural biologists, animal and comparative psychologists, other natural and behavioural scientists, as well as students of these disciplines will find this book to be an interesting and enlightening read.

Book Using Declarative Mapping Sentences in Psychological Research

Download or read book Using Declarative Mapping Sentences in Psychological Research written by Paul M.W. Hackett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using facet theory and Hackett’s pioneering development of the declarative mapping sentence (DMS) as a qualitative methodology, this volume explains the process of formulating and applying the DMS to critically assess female representation in science fiction. Using a comparative approach to the development of female roles in Western science fiction films and television, the authors illustrate how the DMS is formulated and used to analyse the psychological and behavioral profiles of female characters. By maintaining the common structure of the DMS across films while adapting its content for each female role, the text demonstrates the flexibility of the DMS in providing a structure for varied research domains, enabling results to be uniformly compared, contrasted and classified. This insightful and thought-provoking volume will appeal to researchers, academics and educators interested in psychological methods and statistics, qualitative research in gender identity, and research methods more generally. Those especially interested in behavioural psychology, gender and cinema, and science fiction will also benefit from this volume.
