Book excerpt: All across the globe, individuals mobilize international support in defense of Palestinian rights and a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, these international activists are neither the beneficiaries of their efforts nor do they closely identify with the Palestinian population. Through an ethnographic analysis of social movement organizations and international activists active in the West Bank, this paper tries to understand the emergence of transnational collective action fighting for Palestinian rights since the second Intifada. To do so, this paper addresses structural as well as personal factors behind activists’ mobilization. Combining elements from social movement theory and Bourdieusian sociology, I conduct a meso-level inquiry of the principal solidarity organizations alongside a micro-level investigation of international volunteers participating in such organizational structures. Highlighting the specificity of transnational activism in the West Bank both in terms of opportunity structures and the lived experiences of international activists, I have tried to provide insight on how and why the Palestinian rights movement is able to gather so much international support.

We wonder what we can do about the multitude of con?icts currently wreaking havoc across the globe and the continuous reports of violence in communities as well as within families. Most of the time, we contemplate solutions beyond our reach, and overlook a powerful tool that is at our disposal: forgiveness. As a genocide survivor, I know something about it. As the genocide unfolded in Rwanda in 1994, I was devastated by what I believed to be the inevitable deaths of my loved ones. The news that my parents and my seven siblings had indeed been killed was simply unbearable. Anger and bitterness became my daily companions. Likewise, I continued to wonder how the Hutus and Tutsis in Rwanda could possibly reconcile after one of the most horrendous genocides of the 20th century. It was not until I came to understand the notion of forgiveness that I was able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Common wisdom suggests that forgiveness comes after a perpetrator makes a genuine apology. This wisdom informs us that in the aftermath of a wrongdoing, the offender must acknowledge the wrong he or she has done, express remorse, express an apology, commit to never repeating said harm, and make reparations to theextentpossible.Onlythencanthevictimforgiveandagreetoneverseekrevenge.

He records and highlights the facts in an attempt to find the key to unlock the Palestinian, Arab and Israeli conflicts. He keeps pressing for more American-Arab participation in the political process, for more transparency, and for faster and farther reaching to the Americans’ hearts and minds by trying to make them understand the Arabs’ situations, and Arab-Christian Patrimony, culture and heritage. Dr. Effarah attempts to create an Arab-American balanced policy to reach Americans and convince them that there are special interest groups and influential lobbyists in Washington, D.C. who misinform media and try to spin the story around while beholding to the fabricated Israeli points of view. To counterbalance the Zionist efforts, Arab-Americans should “think Palestine” and ask the American citizens to find answers to why the American citizens, the taxpayers, give money outright to Israel: more than $8.5 million per day, according to the CIA Factbook in 2012. It also was upgraded to $8.9 million per day with President Trump Administration giving $3.3 billion in 2019.

For that purpose, Dr. Effarah kept writing weekly articles in Arabic and English for the last twenty-six years with one objectiveThink Palestine. This third volume includes unpublished articles for the last three years (20122015); volume 1 includes the published articles from 2001 to 2006, while volume 2 includes articles from 2007 to 2012. Dr. Effarah believes that the media discrepancies are far more pronounced. There were not enough Palestinian intellectuals around to speak for themselves and are capable of enunciating the Palestinian experience or that the struggle of Palestine is part of a larger battle against imperialism. Today, theres a massive shift that the Internet and social media has brought abouta change in understanding the truth about Palestine being occupied by intruders coming from the four corners of earth to fulfill a fallacy of certain myth that a certain god promised the land of Palestine to the Jews. However, the frame of mind that neglected or avoided the Palestinian narrative has not been defeated completely in the Western world as long as the appreciation of the authenticity of the Palestinian narrative to the central discourse of the Palestine-Israel conflict at every available platformbe it political, academic, cultural, artistic, or in the mediais not comprehended. Dr. Effarah attempts to create a voice for Arab Americans to stand up and be counted and act as an integral part of the American society and help Americans understand the Palestinians situation as part of the Arab culture and heritage.
