Book Nordic fisheries at a crossroad

Download or read book Nordic fisheries at a crossroad written by Jeppe Høst and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nordic fisheries at a crossroad explores how Nordic small-scale fisheries can develop to promote high value creation and product specialization. By looking at recent developments among small-scale but land-based food producers we suggest specialization and dedication as the main development strategies. The central notion is to break away from the price-competitive globalised fish markets and develop new products or distribution models. To succeed in this, there is a need for substantive and coordinated efforts to bridge the gap between conventional logics and the new development logics, between supply and demand. The vision should be to develop viable and composite markets for high quality and specialty fish products through dedication and specialization. Markets that go beyond the local and reach supermarkets and consumers on a national and international scale.

Book Recasting Transboundary Fisheries Management Arrangements in Light of Sustainability Principles

Download or read book Recasting Transboundary Fisheries Management Arrangements in Light of Sustainability Principles written by Dawn A. Russell and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-10-25 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The management of transboundary fish stocks might be described as a complex mosaic. Multiple fora are trying to incrementally shift the fisheries management course towards a sustainable future. Recasting Transboundary Fisheries Management Arrangements in Light of Sustainability Principles reviews and critiques key recasting efforts with a primary focus on Canada’s transboundary fisheries management arrangements for the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. It provides a primer on the international law and policy framework governing transboundary fisheries and offers bilateral and regional case studies in the search for more principled fisheries governance approaches based on the new sustainability imperatives. This book offers current Canadian and international perspectives on the challenges facing regional fisheries management organizations, as well as bilateral and national arrangements, as they face the tides of sustainability reform. Struggles to implement precautionary and ecosystem approaches are especially highlighted.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Royal Commission report on protection of the marine environment focuses on the impact of marine fishing in the seas around the UK, both on fish populations and the wider ecosystem. It consider a range of issues including the role of the fishing industry and its growth over the last 50 years; the legal framework for the marine environment and fisheries, at the national, European and international levels; the impact of fishing and the legacy of overfishing; aquaculture fisheries; marine protected areas; improved fisheries management; and a system of marine spatial planning. The report concludes that, as a society, we give much lower priority to protecting our seas compared with the land, and over-fishing is a global problem which has led to the collapse of fisheries in many areas. This situation requires significant urgent change which recognises the need for sustainable fisheries management and avoids the degradation of our seas, placing it within the context of wider management of human activities in the marine environment. Recommendations made include: the introduction of a Marine Act to establish a statutory framework with strategic objectives for marine environmental protection; a move away from a presumption in favour of fishing rights to a precautionary approach which requires demonstration that fishing activity is environmentally sustainable; establishing a network of marine protected areas within the UK over the next five years, which would lead to 30 per cent of the UK's exclusive economic zone being closed to commercial fishing; and a change in the emphasis of research away from management of fish populations towards a wider focus on the marine environment.

Book Quantification and environmental pollution aspects of lost fishing gear in the Nordic countries

Download or read book Quantification and environmental pollution aspects of lost fishing gear in the Nordic countries written by Unsbo, Hanna and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2023-01-23 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2022-568/ The occurrence of abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) in aquatic environments contributes both to environmental and socioeconomic impacts. In nature, discarded fishing gear contributes to pollution by macro- and microplastics and harmful chemicals as well as to the degradation of habitats. This study compiles information from the Nordic countries on the quantity and composition of lost fishing gear, originating mainly from sport- and recreational fishing activities. The study also considers the occurrence of harmful chemicals associated with the lost fishing gear and the potential impact of these chemicals on the aquatic environment. Suggestions on how to prevent further losses and mitigate negative impact of lost fishing gear are also provided.

Book Nordic Experience of Fisheries Management

Download or read book Nordic Experience of Fisheries Management written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The waters surrounding the Nordic countries are rich in fish resources. Up to this date fisheries has been among the most important productive sectors in the Nordic economies, and in the Faroe Islands and Greenland it is by far the most important sector. Management of marine fisheries has over time had various objectives in the Nordic countries, ranging from fiscal and social purposes to stock conservation and socio-economic well-being in recent years. There are strong similarities between the Nordic countries, but differences in ecosystem and the socio-cultural settings of the fisheries have lead to differentiated management systems anyhow. The purpose of this note is to bring Nordic experience into the discussion of the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy. The discussion takes as its point of departure the so-called Green Paper in which the Commission has summarised the status of the EU fisheries and also put themes and questions up for discussion. The themes and cases of this note address issues which feature prominently in the Green Paper: reduction of over-capacity by establishing rights-based management systems, increase of the responsibility of the industry through development of co-management arrangements, and reduction of the discard of fish

Book Nordic fisheries in transition

Download or read book Nordic fisheries in transition written by Jeppe Høst and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decades Nordic countries have been implementing quota markets and similar instruments to manage mainly the economic performance of their fisheries. Coming from a historical situation dominated by owner-operated fishing units closely connected to their supporting communities, market-based fisheries manage-ment plays a role in promoting company-organised fishing units, non-fisher owner-ship and new social relations. Introducing market-mechanisms to distribute the lim-ited marine resources is therefore not just a change in the technical regulation. It is an active engagement in social change. The publication reviews the Nordic experiences with market-based fisheries management and discusses the implications for managers and future recruitment.

Across Nordic countries several practical projects and initiatives have been launched to promote the benefits of nature in integration and there is also growing academic interest in the topic. Nordic countries have the potential of becoming real forerunners in nature based integration even at the global scale.
