Book Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research

Download or read book Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary human activities that release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere are the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) to generate electricity, the provision of energy for transportation, and as a consequence of some industrial processes. Although aviation CO2 emissions only make up approximately 2.0 to 2.5 percent of total global annual CO2 emissions, research to reduce CO2 emissions is urgent because (1) such reductions may be legislated even as commercial air travel grows, (2) because it takes new technology a long time to propagate into and through the aviation fleet, and (3) because of the ongoing impact of global CO2 emissions. Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research develops a national research agenda for reducing CO2 emissions from commercial aviation. This report focuses on propulsion and energy technologies for reducing carbon emissions from large, commercial aircraftâ€" single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft that carry 100 or more passengersâ€"because such aircraft account for more than 90 percent of global emissions from commercial aircraft. Moreover, while smaller aircraft also emit CO2, they make only a minor contribution to global emissions, and many technologies that reduce CO2 emissions for large aircraft also apply to smaller aircraft. As commercial aviation continues to grow in terms of revenue-passenger miles and cargo ton miles, CO2 emissions are expected to increase. To reduce the contribution of aviation to climate change, it is essential to improve the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and initiate research into new approaches.

Book U S Supersonic Commercial Aircraft

Download or read book U S Supersonic Commercial Aircraft written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-08-25 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is currently developing advanced technologies to form the foundation for the next breakthrough in civil aviation: an economically viable, environmentally acceptable supersonic transport. NASA's High Speed Research Program works in conjunction with industry to identify and address critical technological challenges to initiating commercial development of a practical supersonic transport. The key technical areas investigated are engine emissions, fuel efficiency, service life, and weight; community noise; aircraft range and payload; and weight and service life of airframe structures. Areas of particular interest include the ability of technologies under development to meet program goals related to noise, emissions, service life, weight, range, and payload. This book examines aircraft design requirements, assesses the program's planning and progress, and recommends changes that will help the program achieve its overall objectives.

Book Commercial Supersonic Technology

Download or read book Commercial Supersonic Technology written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-02-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-speed flight is a major technological challenge for both commercial and business aviation. As a first step in revitalizing efforts by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to achieve the technology objective of high-speed air travel, NASA requested the National Research Council (NRC) to conduct a study that would identify approaches for achieving breakthroughs in research and technology for commercial supersonic aircraft. Commercial Supersonic Technology documents the results of that effort. This report describes technical areas where ongoing work should be continued and new focused research initiated to enable operational deployment of an environmentally acceptable, economically viable commercial aircraft capable of sustained supersonic flight, including flight over land, at speeds up to approximately Mach 2 in the next 25 years or less.

Book Commercial Supersonic Transport Program Phase Ii a Comprehensive Report Volume Xiv a Aircraft System Concept

Download or read book Commercial Supersonic Transport Program Phase Ii a Comprehensive Report Volume Xiv a Aircraft System Concept written by BOEING CO RENTON WA AIRPLANE DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The improved performance location of the engines reduces engine exhaust noise on the tail and fuselage, while virtually eliminating noise impingement on the wing. Sound suppression techniques are used and the structure is designed to be fully capable of coping with the temperature and noise for the design life of the airplane, even with occasional hot-day augmented operation under static and takeoff conditions. Passengers are located completely ahead of the engine exhaust nozzle noise cone. The aerodynamic pitchup tendency at high-angles-of-attack has been resolved in wind tunnel tests at both NASA Ames and Boeing. Risk of engine ingestion of debris and slush is eliminated by the use of deflectors and by providing greater distance between inlet and ground. Distribution of hydraulic system power to the control surfaces is balanced so that any failure of a power system does not result in asymmetric control surface operation. Spring-actuated mechanical locks are provided on the aileron and rudder control surfaces to prevent flutter in the event of hydraulic powr failure. Primary flight control system complexity has been reduced. Formal design reviews, system mockups, an extensive equipment quality analysis program, and an integrated test plan using large developmental test rigs provide early detection of problems and permit verification of system operation through prompt revision and refinement.

Book Commercial Supersonic Transport Program Phase Ii a Comprehensive Report Volume Viii a Aircraft Propulsion System

Download or read book Commercial Supersonic Transport Program Phase Ii a Comprehensive Report Volume Viii a Aircraft Propulsion System written by BOEING CO RENTON WASH AIRPLANE DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies conducted during Phase II-A have resulted in design improvements for all major propulsion systems. The pods are relocated. The most significant refinement are: The improved General Electric GE4/J5G afterburning turbojet engine has been selected on the basis of economic, performance, and growth advantages. The inlet design has features which improve cruise performance, allow manual control, and reduce engine noise. The propulsion pods are located farther aft on the wing to improve engine-airplane performance. Exhaust flow is directed away from the empennage by afterburner redesign. The thrust reversing system discharges a major portion of the exhaust flow over the wing for increased reversal capability and reduced exhaust gas ingestion. A low-idle engine control feature is provided for economical descent flight operation. The airplane fuel system incorporates recirculation which allows use of lowest quality Jet A or A-1 kerosene. The constant speed drive/generator and the hydraulic pump on an inoperative engine accessory gear box can be starter driven by pressurized air from another engine during flight or from an air cart during ground operations. The four propulsion pods, as well as the major pod components (inlet, engine, and exhaust system), are interchangeable, and can be installed at any of the four positions.
