Book Instruction and Encouragement for Lent Classic Reprint

Download or read book Instruction and Encouragement for Lent Classic Reprint written by John Henry Hobart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instruction and Encouragement for Lent Now, in the special season of penitence, the first office of Faith is to convince us of the real facts of our' earthly estate, and of the right mode of treating them; of Hope, to en courage us amid the difficulties that rise in the course of discipline; of Love, to warm and gladden our hearts by the thought of Who it is that calls us to take up the Cross of self subjugation. From this point of view I have endeavored to look over the season of Lent, and to suggest some thoughts that may tend to convince and persuade any persons of doubt ful or reluctant minds who may see these pages, that Lent is the just and necessary cor relative of this world's disordered condition; that in it the system of salvation concentrates its vigor; and that to enter upon it thoroughly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instruction and Encouragement for Lent The writer of the following pages hopes that enough will be found in them to justify their title. He has not attempted a complete view of the character and duties of Lent, nor pretended to furnish those who would keep it, with a systematic and detailed method of so doing. It was his purpose originally to make this volume somewhat larger, and to include in a second part a practical and devotional companion to the season. It seemed better, however, to ascertain first whether a less comprehensive plan would prove acceptable to any considerable proportion of those who desire counsel of this sort. Book Lenten Instructions from the Roman Breviary

Download or read book Lenten Instructions from the Roman Breviary written by Brother Hermenegild and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-01-19 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman Breviary is full of inspirational prayers and lessons. These lessons are compiled from the lessons of Matins. On Sundays and greater feasts Matins consists of three nocturns. Each nocturn consists of three psalms and three lessons. The first nocturn has lessons from Sacred Scripture. Since the Bible is readily available, this is omitted from this work. The second nocturn on the feast of saints gives their life story. It is these stories, which are most instructive. On Sundays, these lessons are an explanation either of the current Scripture or some other inspirational instruction and these are included here. The third nocturn is on the day's Gospel. The first lesson begins with a short quote from the Gospel of the day, followed by the beginning of the instruction. These are included here. On smaller feasts and ferial days, there is only one nocturn of nine psalms and three lessons. In Lent, these lessons are on the day's Gospel, while on other ferial days they are from Scripture. On minor feast days, the first two are from Scripture, the third on the day's feast. In Lent there are forty different Gospels read, and the lessons on these form the bulk of this work. The lessons in the Breviary come from the Fathers of the Church and are quite instructive. This work would serve as a good companion to Sunday Sermons of the Great Fathers, as it covers material not contained in this other excellent work. The Fathers of the Church bring out points we may not have considered in our meditations on the daily Gospels. We pray all find these instructions as fruitful as I have. We have included the instructions for the three Sundays prior to Ash Wednesday, Septuagesima, Sexagesima and Quinquagesima, as they form a remote preparation for the commemoration of the mysteries of our Redemption at the end of Holy Week.

Book Stations for Lent and Easter

Download or read book Stations for Lent and Easter written by Andrew Gamman and published by Kereru Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These creative resources will engage your congregation through the most important season of the church year. There are descriptions of dozens of stations, covering Shrove Tuesday through to Easter Sunday, along with tips on how they can best be used. They are clearly described, simple to set up and have been used in a variety of worship settings with churches of different styles, sizes and age-groups. People find it refreshingly inspirational being able to use the scripture at a station to conduct their own journey of discovery. Instead of the worship through this church season being focused, as it is all too often, on the particular theological stance or biases of the preacher, the participation at the stations draws each worshipper to the person of Christ and brings the focus on to their own experience of the Easter story.
