Book excerpt: The objective of the Air Force Installation Restoration Program (IRP) is to assess past hazardous waste disposal and spill sites on Air Force installations and develop remedial actions consistent with the National Contingency Plan (NCP) for those sites which pose a threat to human health and welfare or the environment. The intent is to conduct the remedial investigation and feasibility study in parallel, where feasible, instead of in serial fashion. Stage 1 of the IRP process at King Salmon AFS AK include: literature search; determination of public health and environmental requirements; Field investigation; Qualitative risk assessment; Scoping and initial screening of remedial actions; Development of data quality objectives (DQOs); and preparation of a final report. Keywords: Well logs; Soil gas and geophysical investigations. (RH).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four investigation areas at King Salmon Airport were tested for over 146 inorganic, volatile organic, semivolatile organic, and pesticide contaminants. Of these 146, 31 potential contaminants of concern have been indentified. These contaminants are addressed in this report because they exceed federal or state criteria for the protection of human health and the environment, are consistently present in site media (soil, sediment, surface, and ground-waters), and are potentially toxic to humans and the environment. Suggested actions and the rationale for each investigation area are presented. An extensive appendix of field data is included as a separate volume.

Book Climate Change and Indigenous Peoples in the United States

Download or read book Climate Change and Indigenous Peoples in the United States written by Julie Koppel Maldonado and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-04-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a long history and deep connection to the Earth’s resources, indigenous peoples have an intimate understanding and ability to observe the impacts linked to climate change. Traditional ecological knowledge and tribal experience play a key role in developing future scientific solutions for adaptation to the impacts. The book explores climate-related issues for indigenous communities in the United States, including loss of traditional knowledge, forests and ecosystems, food security and traditional foods, as well as water, Arctic sea ice loss, permafrost thaw and relocation. The book also highlights how tribal communities and programs are responding to the changing environments. Fifty authors from tribal communities, academia, government agencies and NGOs contributed to the book. Previously published in Climatic Change, Volume 120, Issue 3, 2013.

Book Urban Stormwater Management in the United States

Download or read book Urban Stormwater Management in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.

Book excerpt: The Battle of Attu, which took place from 11-30 May 1943, was a battle fought between forces of the United States, aided by Canadian reconnaissance and fighter-bomber support, and the Empire of Japan on Attu Island off the coast of the Territory of Alaska as part of the Aleutian Islands Campaign during the American Theater and the Pacific Theater and was the only land battle of World War II fought on incorporated territory of the United States. It is also the only land battle in which Japanese and American forces fought in Arctic conditions. The more than two-week battle ended when most of the Japanese defenders were killed in brutal hand-to-hand combat after a final banzai charge broke through American lines. Book Essentials of Stochastic Processes

Download or read book Essentials of Stochastic Processes written by Richard Durrett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building upon the previous editions, this textbook is a first course in stochastic processes taken by undergraduate and graduate students (MS and PhD students from math, statistics, economics, computer science, engineering, and finance departments) who have had a course in probability theory. It covers Markov chains in discrete and continuous time, Poisson processes, renewal processes, martingales, and option pricing. One can only learn a subject by seeing it in action, so there are a large number of examples and more than 300 carefully chosen exercises to deepen the reader’s understanding. Drawing from teaching experience and student feedback, there are many new examples and problems with solutions that use TI-83 to eliminate the tedious details of solving linear equations by hand, and the collection of exercises is much improved, with many more biological examples. Originally included in previous editions, material too advanced for this first course in stochastic processes has been eliminated while treatment of other topics useful for applications has been expanded. In addition, the ordering of topics has been improved; for example, the difficult subject of martingales is delayed until its usefulness can be applied in the treatment of mathematical finance.
