Book Continuity and Innovation in Honors College Curricula

Download or read book Continuity and Innovation in Honors College Curricula written by Robert Grover and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuity and Innovation in Honors College Curricula is the second volume in the edited series Honors Education in Transition, which examines the proliferation of honors programs and colleges in American higher education. While honors education has become ubiquitous in American higher education, this transformation has happened without systematic attempts to align what honors means across institutions, and absent a universally agreed upon definitions of what honors is and what it might aspire to be in the future. This generates possibility and flexibility, while also creating rather serious challenges. This book examines dynamic attempts to think creatively about curriculum, a hallmark of honors in higher education. The authors document and discuss innovative attempts ranging from service-learning to international education to innovative ways to blend disciplinary models of pedagogy with honors teaching. Throughout, their investigations are grounded in the present while turning a keen and perceptive eye to the future.

Book Diversity Equity and Inclusion in Honors Education

Download or read book Diversity Equity and Inclusion in Honors Education written by Graeme Harper and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In education, sorting students according to attainment is common. Such sorting clearly sets up the potential for exclusion, based on the attainment ideals and on the modes of selection. Ideals of inclusion suggest diversity, and those of equity, by reference to impartiality, suggest freedom from bias. Honors education, which celebrates excellence, and references “honor” and all that word and concept infers, heightens and promotes the principled recognition of attainment, giving rise to questions of diversity, equity and inclusion. The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), in its Ten Steps to Equity in Education, notes that inclusion is intertwined with fairness. How can honors education—and in the case of the discussions in this book, largely honors in US higher education—promote fairness, be diverse, and support equity? If it does not do so, how can it at all claim to be offering a principled version of what the National Collegiate Honors Council (USA) says are “opportunities for measurably broader, deeper, and more complex learning-centered and learner-directed experiences for its students”? In 2015, the National Society for Minorities in Honors (www.nsfmih.org) was launched in the USA to specifically explore, support and promote diversity, equity and inclusion in and across honors colleges and programs. The first annual NSFMIH conference was held at Oakland University, Michigan. This book began at that inaugural conference, and has been enhanced by enthusiastic contributions beyond that event as well.

Book Present Successes and Future Challenges in Honors Education

Download or read book Present Successes and Future Challenges in Honors Education written by Robert Grover and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Present Successes and Future Challenges in Honors Education is the first volume in an edited series examining the proliferation of honors programs and colleges in American higher education. The contributors document the decades-long structural transformations that led to the rise of honors education while also providing perspective on the present and future challenges in honors education. The chapters address such issues as ensuring equity in honors, how we ought to think about student success and frame this for external stakeholders, and how the diffusion of honors-inspired pedagogies elsewhere in the university forces us to rethink our mission and our day-to-day practice. Throughout, their investigations are grounded in the present while turning a keen and perceptive eye to the future.

Book Excellence Innovation and Ingenuity in Honors Education

Download or read book Excellence Innovation and Ingenuity in Honors Education written by Graeme Harper and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the pursuit of an undergraduate honors education support excellence, innovation and ingenuity? This book offers examples of these things as they occur in honors colleges and programs throughout the USA. However, it additionally throws light on questions of how education generally (and in this case, particularly higher education) impacts on what we can do to contribute to our pool of human knowledge, to support individual and social aspiration, to empower creativity and invention, and, indeed, to make positive individual and communal futures through education. In many ways, the writers here explore the contribution of honors education to the world beyond honors. Equally, they are investigating honors education, from the inside, and contemplating how they can make this aspect of education fundamentally a home of innovative and ingenious practices. The range of discussion in this book stretches from considering active engagement with the global to enhancing approaches to leadership and leadership cultivation, and from applying distinctive styles of thinking to embracing and developing outstanding types of community partnerships. The volume discusses what those in honors education are doing to live up to the promise the ideal of “honors” popularizes and is said to exemplify.

Book Honors Education around the World

Download or read book Honors Education around the World written by Graeme Harper and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is constructed around several significant questions, relevant to every honors program and national perspective. These questions are: “How do various nations view honors education?”, “How do ideas about honors achievements compare internationally?”, “Who defines honors education in each nation and how similar are those definitions from place to place?”, and “What do nations consider most significant when an undergraduate is said to “graduate with honors”?” The cross-disciplinary, intersecting epistemology of honors education stands out worldwide. No matter whether it is known as “honors”, “honours” or “talent-development”, honors education is associated with a student-centric ethos of attainment-setting, and with comprehensive and often creative approaches to teaching and learning. Today, in our more globally connected world, there is good reason to closely and critically consider how an exploration of honors education worldwide can empower both educators and students to match personal and communal aspirations with educational outcomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the most important measure of success for many degree-seeking students is the timely attainment of a Bachelor’s degree, there remains a host of other indicators of student success that vary by student population and students’ personal goals. Many of these smaller successes lead to the ultimate goal of graduation and are significant triumphs throughout the journey through higher education. Success for All is a strategic guide for administrators and educators that offers methods for advising students through the myriad of challenges they face. Every bit of success contributes to the accomplishment of a larger goal, and this book highlights success at every level. It provides a specific roadmap to the research, services, and programs at the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College that support student success in undergraduate and graduate programs regardless of a student’s social, emotional, or prior academic experiences. Contributors discuss how to make students feel welcome in their social and educational environments and how to directly assist them with the timely completion of their degree. Administrators and educators demonstrate how these programs help make a positive contribution to the students and the institutions they serve while implementing practical solutions to increase graduation rates.

Book Advancing Honors Education for Today and Tomorrow

Download or read book Advancing Honors Education for Today and Tomorrow written by Graeme Harper and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education, further education, vocational education and continuing education all refer to progression to a third educational step. That is, a step beyond secondary education, which itself is a step beyond elementary or primary education. While optional, continuing beyond secondary education most often suggests some form of need ‘to acquire advanced knowledge’. But advanced in what way? Advanced in focus? Advanced in depth? Advanced in application? Advanced in the range of knowledge of those who teach in it? Advanced in expectation? Honors education, which is present globally and is highlighted in the United States through a distinctive 100-year history, has reflected on, and continues to reflect on what ‘advanced’ higher education might entail. Consequently, here in Advancing Honors Education for Today and Tomorrow contributors consider some of the interests that strike them as significant in the present and future of advanced learning.

Book Teaching for Excellence Honors Pedagogies revealed

Download or read book Teaching for Excellence Honors Pedagogies revealed written by Marca V.C. Wolfensberger and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What exactly are the characteristics of honors pedagogy? What are the teaching strategies that are particularly relevant and successful for academically gifted and motivated students? In spite of the substantial body of literature about the practice of honors education, largely referring to the United States, very little systematic and empirical research has been done about honors pedagogy. This study contributes to a better understanding of honors pedagogies, focusing not just on what might distinguish honors teaching and learning from standard expectations and methodologies but also on how honors pedagogy offers both instructors and students an opportunity to fundamentally rethink their philosophy of education. The present study points out the similar and different approaches and dispositions in American and Dutch honors teaching. Cultural differences, distinctive educational systems, and diverse priorities play a role in defining both the shared and unique perspectives on honors education in both countries. Therefore, a baseline comparison is made between American and Dutch honors teachers with respect to their teaching strategies.

Download or read book Full Naval Honors written by Robert Macomber and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2023-04-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The memoirs of RADM Peter Wake, USN, steam into the twentieth century in Full Naval Honors. This final volume finds the admiral dealing with European and Japanese spies and assassins in the Pacific while on a “diplomatic” recon mission ahead of the Great White Fleet‘s epic 1907-09 voyage around the world. The action continues at the beginning of World War I, as Wake clashes with a German espionage network in the Central American jungle. The reader will be at Wake‘s side when he visits his friend Theodore Roosevelt‘s New York home in 1918, as that family learns of their tragic war loss. Following that war, readers will learn the poignant story of Peter Wake‘s final years in Key West with his beloved Maria. But Peter Wake‘s story doesn‘t end there, for the call of duty lives on in his descendants as they are plunged into the midst of World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the First Gulf War. From a clandestine mission by Wake‘s son inside the Crimea at the chaotic end of World War I and the start of the Russian Civil War, to a World War II minesweeper commanded by Wake‘s grandson in 1941 at the doomed Philippines, the reader is enveloped in a new era of adventure with the Wake family. On the other side of World War II, we find another Wake grandson training Cuban sailors in anti-submarine warfare, giving them critical skills for their famous 1943 victory against a Nazi U-boat on the Cuban coast. The Wake legacy continues as Wake‘s great-grandson skippers a Swift boat in 1968 Vietnam, later becoming a CIA operative with a crucial role in the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. With the 2023 commissioning of Peter Wake‘s great-great-great grandchild as a U.S. naval officer, his descendants continue their service to Navy and Nation into the uncertain twenty-first century. Some things never change, however. Shadowy espionage, world-changing events, crucial split-second decision-making, gut-wrenching combat, tragic losses and great loves—and above all, a never-ending sense of honor and duty—they all form part of the Wake family‘s character as America depends on each generation of them. Full naval honors, indeed.
